TrackMania Demo

A playable beta/demo for TrackMania is now available, offering a sample of this puzzle/construction/driving game. The file is a 33 MB download, available from 3D Gamers, FileFront, Filerush, Gamer's Hell, and Worthplaying. Here's the description of the game from 3D Gamers: "For the first time ever in a game, the player has to build his track before racing on it. Working out the best route, short cuts and cheeky manoeuvres is the task ahead. Will he find the right way to do the best time?? The name of the game is to collect all the blocks available within the TrackMania set, a truly virtual construction game enabling the creation of increasingly larger and higher tracks, including jumps, loops, and high octane corners, allowing the construction of courses up to an amazing 2000 blocks!"

Geez... looks like based on nostalgia alone this should be a big seller... if it doesn't suck. I'm looking forward to trying it out tonight when I get home.

So "First time ever" isn't exactly an acurate discription then?

This is slightly different from RDS (and in a slightly disappointing way; though the game is fun, if cryptic). But MAN was RDS a good game for its time! Adaptive AI, too (on a system with 64K of RAM): the AI drivers would drive the course "ahead of time" before you raced, so that the computer drivers would take decent paths through any racetrack you constructed... *sigh* I fondly remember using the Top-Fuel dragster and Moon-gravity settings to see how much "air time" I could grab. ;-)

Yes, nostalgia is a strong force... But us "old-timers of gaming" in our mid-to-late 20's (who gamed in the 80's) aren't the mainstream population - so we'll see how much of a boost it gives the game sales-wise.

Take care,

WrongO. Excike Bike for the NES. And I'm sure there are others. But hey, it's all about marketing, right? Who would buy "Excike Bike 2"?? Then again...

(And to think I registered just for this post.)

Yeah, Stunts had that too. Was soooo cool building crazy tracks with loops, jumps and whatnot!

Stunt Driver, I believe it was called (by Spectrum Holobyte), on the PC...I LOVED that game...

This looks pretty cool. I wonder if you can race online your custom tracks. I also think there is another similar game in the works that is more directly related to Stunts. There was a video of it months ago, but it didn't show anything as wild as the loops in this.

I tried this demo and thought it was pretty good. Getting bronze medal's is easy, getting silver can be very hard to nearly impossible. Like on some tracks it will assign 15secs for silver and the best time you could do was 25 secs, how the hell am I going to pull that off? The two main single player modes are quite good. You can race on pre-made tracks or you can do the other mode where you are given a set number and type of "building blocks" to build a track that includes the needed checkpoints and the finish line. The goast car that shows your best time is a nice touch.
