I dont suppose anyone else has noticed the treds in pc games?

Quake era - good single and multiplayer, with the begginings of true 3d acceleration

Quake 2 - Large number of companys switch to single player sweetness (Q2, unreal, sin etc)

Quake 3 - From the outcry of too much single player comes the tournament style games Q3, UT etc

Wolfenstein - multiplayer seems to be the push, so companys go into the team aspect, moving away from the single player man of destruction, to solid team play that relies on others.

Doom 3 - and now we seem to have come back round to a strong single player experiance that push the envelope both graphically and imaginativly (Doom 3, HL 2, Max payne 2 etc)

The above i might have games maybe in the wrong time soon, but generally i think i have the trends in the right order.

So, where does UT2K4 fit into the above? if you ask me, and this is the main reason i think it draws criticism is that people have moved on from the competition style play, and prefer team games or solid single player games. UT2K4 im sure is fun to play for a few hours, but i think people prefer to have combat evolve with the push of wither team, to realise that youve just lost ground and that your team has to make it up or u doomed.

So much negativity in the game scene these days...

If it doens't seem like something you would want don't buy it! No one is "forcing" you to pay for it.

Myself, I'll be buying it.

#52 has it right. If you own the original, you can consider this an expansion, which you will probably be able to get for $20. Hmm, $20 for an expansion sounds reasonable . . . . Wasn't Frozen Throne like $35? Price shouldn't be the issue here, by any means.

There's at least one jet pack mutator and probably 3 grappling hook mutes for UT2k3.

I'm not going to read this thread, probably a wast of time. But if the game is $40, then probably BestBuy, where I buy most games, will have it on sale for $30 on the first week or more. Then the $10 rebate makes 20 something. Which ends up being the same price I paid for the first BF1942 expansion, which was list $30, and $20 on sale the first week at BestBuy. So after the rebate, or the sale price, it's around the normal price of an expansion.

I agree, a jetpack would have rocked in Halo, although it would have had to be just like Tribes

I think outwars has had the best jetpack in a game ever!

It's hardly a fair comparison between FPS expansions and Sports titles yearly releases. Most sport fans don't purchase these titles every year. Also, one doesn't receive all previous versions of Madden when he purchases Madden 2003! Consider it like this: You've purchased every Madden title over the last 5 years at Fifty bucks a pop = $250.00. I go out and buy the latest one and receive all the ones you've purchased as well = $50.00. Let's amend that. You've received a tenner rebate on each puchase so you actually only spent $200.00.

But they wouldn't bother doing this even if it was financially feasible because no one would be interested in playing a year old sport game if you've got the latest. But you definitely need all the old maps and engine updates that come with FPS's.

I don't care much for this franchise anyways but I just might purchase it a few years from now and get a killer deal.

LOL wtf Smellfinger? Have you even played/saw UC?? That's exact same things as UT2K3, same models, same weapons, same textures, same maps and sounds AND SAME ENGINE, I love when people are talking about their ass.

PS: UT2K3 while crappy is much better then UC, because that's the same thing except you dont even get mouse+keyboard to play it.

I agree, a jetpack would have rocked in Halo, although it would have had to be just like Tribes. If you could fly for more than a very short clip it would ruin the balance of the vehicles.

Or just make it that you can't shoot while flying.

Halo really outdoes Tribes, though. As it should, it's much later, but Tribes vehicles were just transportation, mostly. Slow and unweildy (as I felt most of Tribes was). Halo has them as quick weapons (though they could be a tad faster).

I never bought UT2K3 because of "Two More Weeks." But it looks like I'll buy UT2K4 since TV (Tribes Vengeance) will use a modified version of the engine.

You know what that new idea is for UT2K5? The Jet Pack. I mean look at what's happening in online games, they all have vehicles, which started with Tribes. The only thing they're missing is the jet pack and possible the grapling hook.

Games without a jet pack are boring to me, which is why I didn't buy Halo. Takes to long running from the spawn point to the action if no vehicle is available.

You watch, games next year will have a jet pack with wide open outdoor maps like Tribes Vengeance.

The answer why PC UT2K3 sucked ass is Xbox and Unreal Championship, if you think PC version isnt a port then you're fooling you're self, think why UT2K3 is so crappy?

Because it feels like a dumb console-like arcade game, they designed it around the fucking xbox

Why didnt UT2K3 had any vehicles? Because they had to launch it sooner then they were ready.

I think ATARI is the one to blame, but I could be wrong.

Yeah... ok... I understand there is a $50+ version which is ludicris.. I think I was 'furious' enough to read and understand that... which you even state in your post.

That's actually a very good point.

Few people buy their favorite sports game every year - only the die-hards. Most people buy it for a major change. New engine, new franchise mode, etc.

You don't have much of a say with UT2KX. Since it's a mostly online version, you need the most current version in order to play. It's hard enough to find UT2K3 players, imagine when it gets split between two versions... It's upgrade or quit.

Perhaps my shopping habits themselves shield me from a lot of the disapointment that others experience. I NEVER buy a game the day, week, or month it is released. I usualy wait a while and see what reviews say about it and what people in the community say about it, and that way, when I buy a game I know exactly what I'm getting, therefore I'm never disapointed.

So I guess I should be more appreciative of those that are doing the bithing

You might be surprised how many people buy Madden 2000, 2003 and not every one in between. In any case, as already put the updated rosters is a huge part of the game. As far as consoles go, typically these games will be played heavily and very frequently by the owner and several friends, one copy is a lot of entertainment for several people - not to mention there's more value in playing something with a IRL friend in a social setting than on teh intarweb. the value for money in that respect is much higher per game.

Most of the expressed issues do not infact seem to be about being charged again for the game. Looks to me to be more about the poor level of service for UT2K3 and taking the piss by charging approx full whack for 2004, dispite many of it's "new" features oringinally being mentioned for 2003. For all games with an online focus, the overall affect upon the community tends to be far more important than affect on the actual game (or wallets).

You can get bummed and enjoy it when you end up paying out as much as possible for one product split into two, everyone else still has the right to whinge about whatever affects their money and their leisure time.
