LucasArts Previews

Should have mentioned this yesterday (though it fleshing out a slow news day is helpful now), GameSpot has posted a slew of previews of upcoming LucasArts projects from a press event, including: Armed & Dangerous Updated Impressions, Secret Weapons Over Normandy Updated Hands-On Impressions, Jedi Knight- Jedi Academy (Xbox) Impressions, Star Wars- Knights of the Old Republic (PC) Update, and even a Star Wars Galaxies update.

Amen about the SW cliches. Its like we can't figure out that we're playing a Star Wars game, they have to remind us with those hideous cliched lines.

Hehe, maybe thats why X-Wing and TIE fighter games were so good, not because of the excellent space sims..but because no one said "I have a bad feeling about this"

Looking forward to KOTOR since anything Bioware does is at least worth a looksie. I think the idea of setting it 4000 (?) years before the movies is a very smart move on the designers' part. It means they can get away from all the cliched material which was good the first five times but gets damn annoying after the 100th. The next time a character in a SW game says "I've got a bad feeling about this" I am going to scream!

I found NWN disappointing. Great fun, but something of a let down after BG2. For those who have played the X-box, is KOTOR shallow compared to NWN, or just BG2? Because saying something is shallow compared to BG2 is like saying something is small compared to the Pacific Ocean.

Are there any SWOTL fans reading this? At first I was cheesed off about the arcade dumbing down of SWON but I'm not so sure it will be a bad game. Crimson Skies was very arcadish and it was a fun game (when it didn't lock up like a mofo).

Outlaws?

That was a great game. The graphics had that old western look down. The voice acting was awesome.

I bought it again recently and can't get the cut scenes to run right on my box. Maybe I'll try it on the kids, it may be slow enough.

I think I'll give KOTOR another shot once its on the PC. I just couldnt get into it on the XBox. The pace was just to slow.

man, id so love to see a new outlaws game.

as for my harsh criticism of KOTOR, well, like i said I was comparing it to other bioware games. obviously it's still better than the final fantasy series.

Outlaws? The Monkey Island series? I agree, it's been too long...

Don't forget, KOTOR isn't a port. Microsoft gave bioware wads of money to make it come out on the X-Box 6 months early.

In the case of the screwed up microsoft system here in my contry, KOTOR just came out on the xbox. Little to late for me, so I am waiting for the better PC version.

it's pretty thin and watered down for a bioware game.

Ack, given how thin and watered down ToB and NWN were I shudder to think what this means.

KotOR isn't that bad, dave. It might not be as incredibly involved and complex as Baldur's Gate 2, but it's still a very fun RPG to play. Compare it to a Final Fantasy with more freedom in where to go and what to do.

The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with in KotOR is the combat system, it's a bit rigid. But from what I've seen and shortly played on the Xbox, it's good fun. Definitely the best Star Wars title to come out this year.

But it is sad that LucasArts has fallen so deeply. When they announced, what, three or four years ago that they were going to farm out development of Star Wars titles to well established and respected developers, it seemed the sky was the limit.

So far, the only one who's delivered a good game is Raven. Galactic Battlegrounds was so pathetically similar to Age of Empires it just made me weep, and I think my opinion on Star Wars Shithole Galaxies is well known by now...

Then the cancellation of Full Throttle 2... I dunno. I'm holding out hope that Sam & Max 2 will be good, but it's not a whole lot of hope...

sorry to dissapoint you all, but unless they make some major changes from the xb version KOTOR probably isn't the RPG you are looking for. it's pretty thin and watered down for a bioware game. don't go into it expecting the complexity or story of baldurs gate or even NWN. wanna talk about a letdown, how could lucasarts AND bioware slip?

Yeah, really looking forward to KOTOR as well. With Half Life 2 delyed to God know when, KOTOR will be the game that forces me to replace my wheezing old 700 MHz with GF2, to a AMD 64 with ATI 9800 All-in-Wonder

I remember when I looked forward to every new LucasArts release, as they were all shining examples of gameplay beauty.

Okay, maybe I exaggerate, but I have very fond memories of X-Wing, and Day of the Tentacle, and all the Monkey Island games (except the latest).

These days it just seems so... uninspired.

Secret Weapons Over Normandy sounds cool, but I bet they'll screw it up as well.
