DX: Invisible War Website

The official Deus Ex Invisible War Website (Flash-required) is now online, dedicated to ION Storm's upcoming first-person RPG sequel. The site offers DX info straight from Warren Spector, the final version of the Invisible War Trailer, mostly new screenshots, details on features, intros to key characters, creepy background music, and more.

Scroll down the Features list and you'll see:

"Non-lethal, non-violent resolution to conflict, allowing you to make an ethical statement through your actions."

When was the last time we saw that in RPG or FPS gaming?!?

It truly hope they can pull off gameplay that actually evolves through your actions. The closest thing to this that I've experienced was Morrowind, and even that seemed too inorganic, too rigid in it's implementation.

3 Endings Oct 11, 2003, 14:26
Oct 11, 2003, 14:26

I think at first everyone assumed that DX : IW would use the "Illuminati" ending, since it was the longest and by far the most plausible. It was at about that time that I started thinking, based on little tidbits that Ion Storm was throwing out (such as that JC Denton himself hadn't been seen for twenty years), that they would go with another ending, possibly the Helios one. That they would use all three endings seemed weird at first, but they could happen simultaneously to an extent. JC kills Bob Page, fullfilling the Illuminati ending, then merges with Helios and blows up Area 51.

The only few things that don't make sense about that story is

A) If JC destroys Area 51, and puts humanity back in the information era equivalent of the Stone Age, the Illuminati have nothing to rule the world with, hence the ending where JC and Dowd are talking about how they rule the world behind the screens is a bit off.

B) If JC blows up area 51, how exactly does Helios survive, and how can it still influence things? For that matter, if they blew it up after they merged, why would Helios let JC do that?

However, I think the world of Sheldon Pacotti's writing talents (for God's sake Sheldon, WRITE A BOOK ALREADY!!), and I have no doubt he'll have the whole thing wrapped up neatly by the end of the game.

I like how the website mentions that the first Deus Ex happened 10 minutes before Armageddon (ie, the destruction of the global communication network), and now we're 20 years ahead, about to rebuild.

This game is going to be absolutely awesome, and everyone who gets it will be "Half Life who?" 20 hours later.

Damn I can't wait to get my hands on this. I loved the first one, and the second one looks good. The website is damn slick tho, very well designed.

It uses the Unreal Warfare engine, with some heavy modifications such as the Havok physics engine, the same one being used by HL2.

DX2 is looking pretty good. I can't wait. And, due to all those pesky delays, looks like it will be the only big name game to be released this year.

They did a great job on the website, too. Very nice looking.

Yeah, they've rewritten everything but the editor. Graphics, sound, AI, they're using Havok physics, and so on.

The Unreal Engine, but apparently they've re-written components of it along the way (the graphics renderer, for one).

Well, that sounds interesting. Not sure how they will pull it off without totally rewriting the original's ending. The last I heard about DX2 was how they weren't going to reveal what ending they went with, so I'm kinda surprised to see them doing it this way.

It's not totally rewritten. Basically they assume that JC killed Bob Page, merged with Helios and shut down Area 51 (the global communications hub). All three possibilities happened, so no DX1 player will feel cheated -- except the overly-sensitive.

Man, that is one smooth website, beautiful design. Deus Ex was one of the few games that stayed in my head forever after playing it, much like Final Fantasy 7. I still hum the themes a lot, and think about the cool settings and mood. So, Deus Ex 2 is top of my anticipation list, above HL2, Doom 3, Thief 3 (when will we get more details for this game?), and some other cool releases coming up. Looks like an awesome game.

Come on guys, they clearly stated recently that the sequel assumes all three endings occurred.

Also, you can find Alex Denton (your character in DX2) in Deus Ex at Area 51.
Area 51 is so 1990. It's all about S4 now!

I am too lazy to actually look for it, but I could have sworn that they had, indeed, selected one of the three endings as a starting basis for DX2.

Not sure; just wanting the game :),

I doubt the new story assumes that all three endings happened. It's sounds to me like they have written the new story to be a little vague so that any of the three could have happened.

And man, I can't wait for this one.

No kidding. Now that HL2 and D3 are delayed, maybe DX2 will get the recognition is deserves this holiday season!

The first thing that comes to mind is he downloaded Helios/Datalus(sp) realized the Area 51 was a danger in, anyones or any goverment hands and killed or imprisoned BobP and became a member of the Illuminati recultanly so he would still have a hand in things.
