Half-Life 2: Delay? Maybe, Playable? Yes

New delay for Half-Life sequel on BBC News (thanks Eraserhead) has a quote from Christophe Ramboz of Vivendi Universal Games on the Half-Life 2 source code theft that takes a completely different direction than the talk of four month delays found in a different article (story), as they have him saying: "Vivendi Universal Games is only the distributor of the product, which is produced by the US studio Valve and so it will up to them to make an announcement." Meanwhile, Thieves steal playable version of Half-Life 2 on CNN Money contradicts reports that downplay the amount of code stolen, choosing to reveal that the Source source thieves "also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build."

Why build the game if you had access to the valve environment? Gabe must have had an exe on his computer...

It smells like someone tries to cover off his sent..

(or maybe they just need a playable thing to check the cheats on :-) )

Why build the game
...

to show that it wasn't just 1/3 of the code?

It just goes to show that you should never say "It can't get worse"

Tomorrow I expect to see the headline: "Newell discovers his toilet bowl has been rigged with spy cam"

So someone please explain to me why the partial theft of this source code will result in a 6 month delay... They still have the code don't they? Or was it removed from their servers entirely? Or do they feel that the have to change the code so that the hackers can't take advantage of their knowledge of how the code works?

Sorry, I just don't get it.

That would be so unfortunate. Would that mean that Gabe couldn't go number 2 for six months?

yeah, the way I understand it, that's the problem. people can make new and "better" ways to cheat since they know the secrets that Valve was doing to keep the cheating out.

as far as why only partial theft results in a delay, I would think it's all in what part was stolen, and I dont think Valve will want to tell us all exactly what part was stolen, otherwise you're telling the pricks that stole it exactly what they got.

although saying I completely understand how source code works would be very wrong, so, I also may be full of it.

Yeah I would have to agree with you Egen, because this CCN article seems to think there is other pieces than just source code. Valve doesn't want people to know the full extent of the robbery.

My nose itches a little more every time I read some additional tidbit on this story. It's got all the earmarks of a publicity stunt...

"Hey, guys... Instead of just releasing a demo, how 'bout we have someone 'steal' the 'source-code' and a few maps from one of our 'unsecured' storage units, and release it as a 'pirate' build? <winwink-nudgenudge> It'll get buttloads of attention."

Well, after hearing that the delay could be up to six months, learning that there's a playable (albeit crappy) version of HL2 floating around, and enduring all this hype over the past couple of months, I don't blame anyone for wanting to get their hands on the illegal version.

Just remember to buy the game when it's released too....

This is actually bad news for the PC hardware industry as many people were willing to upgrade for this game. This will hurt all hardware companies including ATI. Now there is no other major game besides Halo possibly that will warrant a upgrade.

It's pretty clear Vivendi are trying to distance thermselves from player backlash at the delay by making it all Valves' decision. With friends like that...
Also: So, they got ALL the source code and a boatload of content too eh?. Too bloody bad they didn't hack 3dRealms, we might have a playable Duke Nukem Forever by now :-)
