They did it to take attention off the ever unpopular STEAM that was getting bad press and to give them more time with the Steam security issues..

This is the best advertising (for free) that any game has ever had.
And you people that actually believe anything was stolen are doing a great job at keeping the interest in the game going. (Insert applause here)
The Advertising team of VALVE could not have done a better job at getting free publicity. (Insert a snappy Salute)

If any of you……. for some reason want to actually believe anything…….. just believe that they have come up with a great way to push back the game and have some fictional people to blame.
I for one think that a game is ready when it is ready. Getting our hopes up only to shoot them down is done with almost every software company out there. So why would Valve be any different?
You all need to relax sit back have a coffee and say what a pile of crap and just look at the other games coming out this fall and winter.
But this is just my opinion and it will mean about as much as yours do to me I am sure.

The game is still a buncha scripts. That e3 demo was fake, when you play the game there's a little counter that says "days till 9/30/03" AHHAHA

word on the street is that the beta patch does nothing btw

there's a new release out that adds on halflife 1 and CS so you can play something on the engine

i did a bit of playing to see what you guys are jerking off about and it seems like halflife 1 with the graphics being a bit prettier.. .my favourite in the beta so far is the physgun which lets you pick up objects and whip them around

Valve has done such a great job in the past of creating products that have supported it's community and all in all has given it everything that is has wanted.

There's a good bit of misinformation and pure speculation in this thread. Here's my attempt to corrected it: (mostly facts but a few of my opinons as well :P)

* The source code is 99% if not 100%. It compiles to the same files found in in the beta.

* The source code contains the half-life engine, halflife, counter strike, the Source engine, half-life2, team fortress 2, and various dev tools(ie hammer) and sdks(ie havok). The source extracts to ~160MB of mostly text files... if your a programmer think about that.

* The E3 levels are mostly 'smoke and mirrors' and not really made to be played. They were obviously made for E3.

* The party that leaked the source code is different from the party that leaked the beta. BUT they both originally came from the same group of hackers - the same hack into valve.

* The game is far from finished, look at the source, look at the levels in the beta.

* HL2 will still rock when it comes out. Most likely in 2004 some time.

I don't agree with the actions of the hacker(s), taking the files to begin with. However, it it worries me even more that so many people want to string them up and get very upset at others discussing issues relating to the game that they personally don't think should be discussed.

I would like to know how many of the people getting angry about discussion of a beta, that cannot be un-released, don't have a single MP3 downloaded using KaZaA, or a piece of pirated software they shouldn't have on their computer, but they use anyway, everyday.

Do we know exactly through what wholes the hacker/thieves were able to infiltrate Valves network. Should we be worried about the same wholes in our systems? Is it a Microsoft whole? Another reason why games should still be released on Linux.

I said this years ago on the Black & White forum and I'll say it again (only because you brought it up first). Cheesecake breaks the official food rules that most sane human beings share.

The argument for this rule is as follows:
First you have cheese which is salty. Then you got cake with is a confectionary sweet (which is different than fruit sweet, which should never be mixed with cheese or any other salty substance). Salty ingredients and confectionary ingredients can be mixed together quite properly, however cheese is one of those salty substances that should never be mixed with a confectionary sweet.

I'd go deeper into the rule to explain the theory behind it, but this is hardly the time nor the place to discuss this subject.
