Half-Life 2: Delay? Maybe, Playable? Yes

New delay for Half-Life sequel on BBC News (thanks Eraserhead) has a quote from Christophe Ramboz of Vivendi Universal Games on the Half-Life 2 source code theft that takes a completely different direction than the talk of four month delays found in a different article (story), as they have him saying: "Vivendi Universal Games is only the distributor of the product, which is produced by the US studio Valve and so it will up to them to make an announcement." Meanwhile, Thieves steal playable version of Half-Life 2 on CNN Money contradicts reports that downplay the amount of code stolen, choosing to reveal that the Source source thieves "also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build."

This is the best advertising (for free) that any game has ever had.
And you people that actually believe anything was stolen are doing a great job at keeping the interest in the game going. (Insert applause here)
The Advertising team of VALVE could not have done a better job at getting free publicity. (Insert a snappy Salute)
And some of you people are knuckle heads enough to take stock in anything that is being spread online.
If any of you……. for some reason want to actually believe anything…….. just believe that they have come up with a great way to push back the game and have some fictional people to blame.
I for one think that a game is ready when it is ready. Getting our hopes up only to shoot them down is done with almost every software company out there. So why would Valve be any different?
You all need to relax sit back have a coffee and say what a pile of crap and just look at the other games coming out this fall and winter.
But this is just my opinion and it will mean about as much as yours do to me I am sure.
I for one don’t believe the crap about the engine being snatched from under Valves nose

word on the street is that the beta patch does nothing btw

there's a new release out that adds on halflife 1 and CS so you can play something on the engine

i did a bit of playing to see what you guys are jerking off about and it seems like halflife 1 with the graphics being a bit prettier.. .my favourite in the beta so far is the physgun which lets you pick up objects and whip them around

maybe he is Kenneth Lay, and hes just pissed that his millions of stolen dollars cant get him halflife any faster than the hackers got it for themselves.

...at how few people here are pissed off at these guys who have stolen the code and leaked it.

I'm pretty pissed as should everyone.

Really? Why should I be pissed? If you have a house in South Central, and leave the doors wide open and hang a bit fat sign up from your balcony saying "I've just won the fucking lottery!!!!", and people come into your house and steal your money, should I be pissed? Or should I just think you're stupid? Valve, in regards to that, is actually in a WORSE location than South Central (ie, connected to the Internet), they're working on the most eagerly anticipated game since Zaxxon, have no security whatsoever to speak of, and they got robbed. Boohoo, poor Valve. Where were you when 50.000+ people who worked for Enron got fired and then saw Kenneth Lay walk off with their pension money, hero?

Valve has done such a great job in the past of creating products that have supported it's community and all in all has given it everything that is has wanted.

PRODUCT. Not product S. Just one. And given it everything it ever wanted? Do the words Team Fortress 2 mean anything to you? Are you aware of the fact that EVERYTHING played on multiplayer Half Life 2 was in NO WAY developed by Valve, but by modders?

Then members of this very same community steal the code, and the rest of the community just ho's and hum's about the code being stolen and points fingers at the developer and publisher for being idiots or accuses them of trying to pull a cheap marketing ploy.

What the fuck is the rest of the community supposed to do. Get all depressed and cry themselves to sleep over a mug of stale Coors Light? Valve had NO security. 95% of the people in this community FULLY WELL understand that no security while being connected to the Internet = The Fucking Dumbest Thing Ever(tm).
Wake up and smell the coffee sunshine, this is the real world we're talking about, not some Disney variation where everyone cares about everyone. If someone does something stupid, people laugh at him. Valve did something stupid, so people laughed at them.

Wake up people, educate yourselves better about the industry that you are all so quick to criticize, DEMAND things from and point the finger at.

No, I think most people here know a lot more about the industry, and about general human nature, and about what's stupid and what's not, than you do.

The conspiracy theories are a waste of time space and effort. Everyone here should be freaking out about this theft. Everyone should doing everything that they can to find out who has screwed everyone out of this game until the next year. We should also be freaking out about how these PUNKS have cost A LOT of people one HELLUAVA lot of money.

For fuck's sake Zsa Zsa, stop your fucking whining. 30 millionaires in Valve have to wait a few extra months before releasing their game to upwards of 10+ million copies sales, oh no, we should freaking all break out in tears. Once again, where were you when Kenneth Lay bankrupted FIFTY THOUSAND people?

HL2 Source/Beta .... Oct 8, 2003, 20:53
Oct 8, 2003, 20:53

There's a good bit of misinformation and pure speculation in this thread. Here's my attempt to corrected it: (mostly facts but a few of my opinons as well :P)

* The source code is 99% if not 100%. It compiles to the same files found in in the beta.

* The source code contains the half-life engine, halflife, counter strike, the Source engine, half-life2, team fortress 2, and various dev tools(ie hammer) and sdks(ie havok). The source extracts to ~160MB of mostly text files... if your a programmer think about that.

* The E3 levels are mostly 'smoke and mirrors' and not really made to be played. They were obviously made for E3.

* The party that leaked the source code is different from the party that leaked the beta. BUT they both originally came from the same group of hackers - the same hack into valve.

* The game is far from finished, look at the source, look at the levels in the beta.

* HL2 will still rock when it comes out. Most likely in 2004 some time.

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking
action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve
has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to
understand it wasnt finished yet.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 was one big fake by Valve.
Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the
door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that
THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no
such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how
much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything
just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

I don't agree with the actions of the hacker(s), taking the files to begin with. However, it it worries me even more that so many people want to string them up and get very upset at others discussing issues relating to the game that they personally don't think should be discussed.

I would like to know how many of the people getting angry about discussion of a beta, that cannot be un-released, don't have a single MP3 downloaded using KaZaA, or a piece of pirated software they shouldn't have on their computer, but they use anyway, everyday.

Bunch of F**KING HYPOCRITES!!!

The game is out there. It isn't complete so most people who download it will eventually buy it anyway. Bottom line is that it is only a f**king game, for Godssake. Get over it and get outside and get some fresh air. Enough "get"s for one morning.

Bring on DOOM3....

Do we know exactly through what wholes the hacker/thieves were able to infiltrate Valves network. Should we be worried about the same wholes in our systems? Is it a Microsoft whole? Another reason why games should still be released on Linux.

I said this years ago on the Black & White forum and I'll say it again (only because you brought it up first). Cheesecake breaks the official food rules that most sane human beings share.

The argument for this rule is as follows:
First you have cheese which is salty. Then you got cake with is a confectionary sweet (which is different than fruit sweet, which should never be mixed with cheese or any other salty substance). Salty ingredients and confectionary ingredients can be mixed together quite properly, however cheese is one of those salty substances that should never be mixed with a confectionary sweet.

I'd go deeper into the rule to explain the theory behind it, but this is hardly the time nor the place to discuss this subject.

First off I think you have some information incorrect.

1) Valve annouced a delay before the source stolen information was given out. (But near the original Sept 30th release date.) Vivendi said it would be delayed before Valve also.
2) Release date was pushed to Holiday 2003. This was because Valve finnally admitted the game wan't ready. (Which is no big deal IMO).
3) Source code is reported stolen
4) Vivendi annouces FURTHER delay until April 2004 due to source code issues.
5) Valve still saying Holiday 2003

1) Game was already being delayed til Holidays 2003, so that means it wasn't ready! If Valve was going to use source code release as an excuse, they would have reported it BEFORE delaying the Sept 30th release date.
2) We still don't know for sure about April 2004
3) It is VERY possible that even if the source wasn't released there would be further delays if the game is not ready.
4) The same people complaining that Valve isn't releasing right now are the same ones who would complain if Valve DID release now and A) the game was buggy or B) Someone DID hide a trojan or something in the game or C) Cheats became MUCH easier.
5) The game was annouced THIS year. We have had ONE delay. What exactly is the big deal?
6) Perhaps Valve really did think they would make the Sept 30th release and were just holding off til they knew for sure.
7) Perhaps Valve KNEW it would be delayed because of the source code release, maybe they held off so that they could start tracking the people doing it without them knowing that Valve knew what was going on.

True, I'm biased. I have had an axe to grind with Valve for a long time, for killing TF2 for years, for preventing us from checking for cheaters while providing VAC (which is useless for anyone but CS/DoD servers), for making our list of thousands of cheaters useless totally unncessarily, and now for insulting us by telling us they need five more months to clean up after these hackers.

BUT, that's beside the point. Yeah, Valve got screwed, but I still see no reason this should delay the game. If they are worried about someone modifying the source, fire up VSS and do a diff on the whole tree with the last known clean date. If they have some security stuff that needs to be "rewritten", do it. If it's truly secure all they'll have to do is regenerate their private keys. And FFS, change all your passwords, people!

Bottom line, nothing they should have to do as result of a break-in should take five months. Shit, you could bring in a college intern to do those things in a day, tops.

If Valve isn't lying to us, Vivendi is, and Valve is towing the line.

I don't think I will buy hl2 as they are taking the piss, septemeber 30th was the date, yes slip a bit, but all the way until april 2004 is a complete and utter joke, it's tfc2 all over again, this code hack thing is an excuse, perhaps the game is actually rubbish and they will restart it, it's only god damn code bits stolen, so what, worst thing is that cheaters make programs, if they can do that will a few bits of code then maybe the game wasn't that cheater safe anyway, basically delaying the game so long is a complete joke, because it will be delayed again and because u will get cheaters anyway whatever you do, I can't believe they are so stupid to delay it at all
