Half-Life 2: Delay? Maybe, Playable? Yes

New delay for Half-Life sequel on BBC News (thanks Eraserhead) has a quote from Christophe Ramboz of Vivendi Universal Games on the Half-Life 2 source code theft that takes a completely different direction than the talk of four month delays found in a different article (story), as they have him saying: "Vivendi Universal Games is only the distributor of the product, which is produced by the US studio Valve and so it will up to them to make an announcement." Meanwhile, Thieves steal playable version of Half-Life 2 on CNN Money contradicts reports that downplay the amount of code stolen, choosing to reveal that the Source source thieves "also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build."

I always wondered why, if they had access to the full CVS tree of code, only partial code was taken. If they could have downloaded part of it why not all of it? And if parts of it were segregated from their LAN so they couldn't be accessed, why not all of it?

Maybe this is just all a new kind of hype set in motion by Valve. The last few week's events sound too much like a hackers wet dream. I mean, getting the entire source code of a game before it's released. Then getting a playable build of it. Sounds a little too convenient.

Or maybe Valve really are that fucking stupid. Remember, they're still technically industry newbies. They have only one game under their belt.

i can't link on here because blue will just remove the post
i see a few copies of the beta up for download though.. probably be a torrent in the weeks to come

if it were battlefield vietnam i'd actually download it to check it out.. i dont have any interest in this game

Yeah, all we need now is a "Gabe has committed suicide" story. This is getting WAY outta control.

haha.. that'd be nuts

If I was valve, i'd release the E3 demo publicly, and make it a big announcement, because people are going to play whatever they can get, and if its a half-assed pieced together pile of shit version that doesnt do the game justice, that hurts valve, if its their official test demo, and its polished, that could onlyhelp them... Of course this is assuming the game is actually fun to play.

It just goes to show that you should never say "It can't get worse"

Yeah, all we need now is a "Gabe has committed suicide" story. This is getting WAY outta control.

If I were the Valve crew, I'd shut down the entire network and take 2 weeks vacation. They're not going to be done until next year anyway, so they might as well decompress a bit and try and forget about all this.

Not a chance I would think. there is just too many bad things that would be attached to them having the source code released. Same thing with having a beta version released.

Lay off the McDonalds next time.

No, no, think about this: What if they hadn't stolen it and just inserted some malacious code into it without anyone knowing? Then every copy that was sold would have this trojan and the damage would be done by the time Valve got to patching it...Obviously they had access to the system for quite a bit of time before anyone noticed. If they had waited to a little before Gold, they could have done it...

You need a really, really good computer to compile the source code for vapor-ware.

if who ever ripped it off did so just to create an aimbot. Can you imagine getting caught and thrown in the slammer for 20 years b/c you wanted to cheat at a game?

Priceless.

It's pretty clear Vivendi are trying to distance thermselves from player backlash at the delay by making it all Valves' decision. With friends like that...
Also: So, they got ALL the source code and a boatload of content too eh?. Too bloody bad they didn't hack 3dRealms, we might have a playable Duke Nukem Forever by now :-)

This is actually bad news for the PC hardware industry as many people were willing to upgrade for this game. This will hurt all hardware companies including ATI. Now there is no other major game besides Halo possibly that will warrant a upgrade.

Well, after hearing that the delay could be up to six months, learning that there's a playable (albeit crappy) version of HL2 floating around, and enduring all this hype over the past couple of months, I don't blame anyone for wanting to get their hands on the illegal version.

Just remember to buy the game when it's released too....

Currently playing: ARMA 3 mods and DayZ

My nose itches a little more every time I read some additional tidbit on this story. It's got all the earmarks of a publicity stunt...

"Hey, guys... Instead of just releasing a demo, how 'bout we have someone 'steal' the 'source-code' and a few maps from one of our 'unsecured' storage units, and release it as a 'pirate' build? <winwink-nudgenudge> It'll get buttloads of attention."

Sorry, but methinks I smell less-than-edible foodstuffs in a certain northern European nation...

Yeah I would have to agree with you Egen, because this CCN article seems to think there is other pieces than just source code. Valve doesn't want people to know the full extent of the robbery.

>Or do they feel that the have to change the code so that
>the hackers can't take advantage of their knowledge of
>how the code works?

yeah, the way I understand it, that's the problem. people can make new and "better" ways to cheat since they know the secrets that Valve was doing to keep the cheating out.

as far as why only partial theft results in a delay, I would think it's all in what part was stolen, and I dont think Valve will want to tell us all exactly what part was stolen, otherwise you're telling the pricks that stole it exactly what they got.

although saying I completely understand how source code works would be very wrong, so, I also may be full of it.

Egen

Tomorrow I expect to see the headline: "Newell discovers his toilet bowl has been rigged with spy cam"

That would be so unfortunate. Would that mean that Gabe couldn't go number 2 for six months?
