Half-Life 2: Delay? Maybe, Playable? Yes

New delay for Half-Life sequel on BBC News (thanks Eraserhead) has a quote from Christophe Ramboz of Vivendi Universal Games on the Half-Life 2 source code theft that takes a completely different direction than the talk of four month delays found in a different article (story), as they have him saying: "Vivendi Universal Games is only the distributor of the product, which is produced by the US studio Valve and so it will up to them to make an announcement." Meanwhile, Thieves steal playable version of Half-Life 2 on CNN Money contradicts reports that downplay the amount of code stolen, choosing to reveal that the Source source thieves "also stole enough game maps and other components to put together a playable build of the game. Today, five days after the first leak, they have released that build."

FYI

...
SOURCES CLOSE to Valve Software tell us that despite wires – including us – picking up a Les Echos report that Half Life is delayed, it won't be. And it isn't.
Apparently Valve is close to issuing a statement about all of this – and our sources maintain that it's still going to ship in the "holiday" period – Yuletide to you and me.

Well, maybe this is Valve's new technique for releasing games...After Steam, any method of release seems preferable....

RELEASE THE RETAIL ALREADY!!! The longer they wait, the further they take it

I'd like to see it too, but they still have a long way to go with it. I'm sure the game wasn't ready for Xmas 2003 long before any of this happened. Hopefully, by 2004 we'll have a game that looks more like the E3 build than this beta. In the meanwhile, Valve only has to point out all the free publicity they're getting now if they need to justify further expenses.

I doubt 3drealms is stupid enough to have sensitive data like the source or game data on an insecure computer.

I feel bad for valve but thier negligance seems rather high in this case. They knew people were highly anticipating this game they should have protected themselves better.

While they may been been responsible for the doom 3 mess.....

1) I doubt they had access to the source code.
2) Even if the source and beta were released by 2 different people, ATI has a vested interest in the full real version of HL2, I don't think they had one with Doom 3. I would also assume after the last screw up they got there act together.

<i>These conspiracy theories drive me nuts. Why in the world would either company possible want to leak a playable build of HL2 or the source code when they have so much to lose if they get caught?

A little group of weeny hackers took the source code and released the playable build.</i>

The same little group of weeny hackers that released the Doom 3 alpha?

Well, technically I'm sure they did release the source to DNF...It's about time for an engine change anyway... But just for you I hacked into 3D realms. Here's the source code for DNF:

here is the beginning of the exe source code!!!

// #include "build.h"
// #include "quake.h"
// #include "quake2.h"
// #include "prey.h"
// #include "unreal.h"
// #include "quake3.h"
// #include "unrealtournament.h"
// #include "ut2003.h"
// #include "ut2004.h"
#include "hl2.h"

Let's see....who else has a knack for releasing betas for huge upcoming games, but might also have access to HL2 beta code?

Nvidia? There's a motive, but not a means. Who else....

Could it be...

ATI???
