Half-Life 2 = April 2004?

A couple of mainstream articles on the Half-Life 2 source code leak have appeared on New Scientist (thanks Mr.Skull) and CNET News.com (thanks Mike Martinez). Neither of those do much other than rehash the situation, but Vivendi's "Half Life II" game delayed by code theft on Reuters (thanks Brett Hopkins) has the first indications of how the fallout from this is impacting the game's release, (though this is not directly from Valve, so if the pattern that's been established continues, we expect this is not the last word on the topic). Here's the quote that suggests the new release date has been delayed until at least April 2004:
"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition."
Update: Half-Life Source (ironically titled, under the circumstances) has their report based on visiting Valve saying that "only a SMALL PORTION" of the source has been stolen, and an email they attribute to "Mike Thompson who says he works for Vivendi Universal" saying "delay is not confirmed..." Did I mention this might not be the last word on this subject?

I said there was a 50/50 chance it would be delayed again. Although it was most likely going to be delayed no matter what. In any event: I am not surprised in the least.

...this "sucks."

As if breaking the law and really abusing/discouraging Valve for all their hard work was not enough.

You know, I was just re-watching all the HL2 videos yesterday on my new monitor (Viewsonice P225fb - can you say "Trying to buy happiness?" - but looks AMAZING) and, even with the game not due until November or December-ish, I realized even more just how amazing this game looks.

Thanks, whomever.

Just wanting to play the game and have some fun :-|,

I won't believe it untill I hear it from valve.... Of course... then I won't believe that untill i see it on a shelf.... of course I won't believe that untill I actually have the box in my hands and pay for it.... and I STILL won't believe it untill I'm actually playing the damn thing.

Those game devlopers are tricky bastards.

Glad to see ya around Ray!

OK, I've been holding off all this time to watch the HL2 videos, figuring that I'll just be amazed come Sept 30th.

SO...what are some good links to the best HL2 videos? I need SOMETHING to pass the time between now and next April-December.

Thank you!

Guess I don't have to delay my massive computer upgrade, with XIII and Max Payne imminent and half-life growing further and further away (who knows what the hell is going on with doom III).

I just pray the dope behind all this is a hardcore gamer who MIGHT just realise the cost of his 'kewl'(not) stunt.

Is that Valve should have just continued to keep their mouth closed. They shouldn't have said a goddamn thing until the game was just about ready to be shipped out.

The game would have been enough press to make it sell in huge numbers, and then non of this delay/taking it in the ass from ATI bullshit would have happened.

So, it is a fact that ATI paid a large sum of cash to Valve to be a 'launch' partner for the game.

My question is... did nvidia pay an even LARGER amount of cash to Valve to delay the game until nvidia could put out some hardware that actually was able to play the game?

wow, what a huge delay... i bet games using the ripped off code will appear on the market before HL2 does!!

Just a thought...

What if NVIDIA is behind this? Think about it - the release of HL2 would seriously jeopardize their bottom line, as everybody knows now that ATI's cards run DirectX9 stuff far better.

The delay of HL2 (the most serious DX9 threat) buys them time to improve their product enough so that they can "catch up", possibly saving their customer base.

With all the bitching, moaning and yes, CHEATING that NVidia has done lately, I wouldn't put it past them. Just quietly hire some talented hackers to do the job for them. And the most effective way to get Valve's attention and make them delay is to have that source code posted on the Internet.

Makes sense to me. I think we need an "independent counsel"-type investigation!

What are the chances of whomever did this being caught anyway? I would think that it would be pretty easy to figure out how much money the thief has cost Valve and their publisher and that the punishment could be harsh. I sure hope they can catch the dick.
