Half-Life 2 = April 2004?

A couple of mainstream articles on the Half-Life 2 source code leak have appeared on New Scientist (thanks Mr.Skull) and CNET News.com (thanks Mike Martinez). Neither of those do much other than rehash the situation, but Vivendi's "Half Life II" game delayed by code theft on Reuters (thanks Brett Hopkins) has the first indications of how the fallout from this is impacting the game's release, (though this is not directly from Valve, so if the pattern that's been established continues, we expect this is not the last word on the topic). Here's the quote that suggests the new release date has been delayed until at least April 2004:
"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition."
Update: Half-Life Source (ironically titled, under the circumstances) has their report based on visiting Valve saying that "only a SMALL PORTION" of the source has been stolen, and an email they attribute to "Mike Thompson who says he works for Vivendi Universal" saying "delay is not confirmed..." Did I mention this might not be the last word on this subject?

Ok, ebgames now gives a release date of 11/27/2003. Now I coulda sworn that was april 2004 a day or two ago. Has Vivendi actually seen the light? Will they actually have the financial sense to cash in on x-mas as they obviously need to do? Or is EB hitting the pipe too much, trying to stir up interest in pre-orders, only to switch the date back to april later on? I really hope EB knows something we don't.... otherwise it's gonna be a long, cold winter for Valve and Vivendi.

lets look at the facts here.

If they delayed hl2 until next year just for some obscure reason to trya nd spite some hacker, they lose two fold, firstly they lose one SHITLOAD of christmas sales (which is why they would REALLY want it out before christmas it physically possible, even if it has bugs). And as someone else said they would have handed the hacker a huge amount of power on a plate.

So as far as im concerned they have no intention of releasing it next year and will infact release it when its done, which if at all possible, WILL be at least a couple of weeks before christmas, minimum. I think they are full of shit myself, crying like a kid with a skinned knee "right someone hacked us because we was a dumbass and used microsoft email clients which are known to be insecure and have shitloads of security holes, so we gonna delay the game by 6 months". gimme a break.

I will say this. Any delay in HL2 will make these hackers toes curl as they explode in extacy with the power they hold over valve. That is why hackers do what they do because it's the only way they can feel control in thier life. Don't give it too them. Release HL2 on time.

A hacker wouldn't warn, he would do. This is bullshit. The game data this fuck has doesn't contain the latest data. It's months old & has massive error textures throughout the thing. Just look at the screenshots. This guy is full of shit!

I for one am looking forwards to Hidden and Dangerous 2 because of the type of gameplay it offers so im not totally excited about HL2 despite it possibly having all these great features and im not saying itll be crap because it sure does look good and im going to give it a go.

Anyway all this about the source code has been stolen, oh damn the release date has been pushed back and all the other stuff going on regarding HL2. Who cares, the fact is that the game is still coming out, everyone who is looking forward to it will still play it because its a sequel to a very popular game.

Wow! What a melodramatic goof! You'd think this guy was threatning some oil conglomerate to save seals or some clear-cutting mega corporation to save trees! Not a game company... to save gamers? And to what end?

OK let's face it, the source code has been stolen, but you really should consider this:
This is Chewbacca. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyk, but Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it. That does not make sense. Why would a Wookiee , an eight-foot-tall Wookiee , want to live on Endor with a bunch of two-foot-tall Ewoks. That does not make sense. But more important, you have to ask yourself what does this have to do with this case.

No, it's not at all the entire game or anything like a finished product. But it sure is a whole lot of it.

Apparently Valve may have lost some of the code if the hacker's deleted parts of it instead of just copying.

What gave anyone that idea?

It isn't the entire game. Playable beta version != entire game. Alot of the maps crash when you try to load them and not even all the maps are there. It's missing alot of textures as well. It certainly wasn't "1/3 of the source code" like they said, but it wasn't the entire game. Most of the e3 maps seem to be working and there are others which are hit and miss about whether they load or not.

Couple of interesting things regarding Half-Life 2:

Despite what Valve have been saying, the *entire game* was stolen: Maps, models, textures, everything. This has now been released and is available on the internet as a 1.38Gb download.

Whoever hacked Valves network and ripped them off has been making some interesting claims that support some of the theorys I've seen here on Blues. To quote from the release notes:

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to understand it wasnt finished yet.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 was one big fake by Valve. Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the door will still get kicked ? No scripted sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

Blue made this video:

Not only that but Blue's hit count has been going through the roof!!!

I'm absolutely certain that Blue is behind this.

Look at this other video that Blue made:

http://www.fanta.dk/showmovie.asp?mid=AAD098F8-B8BD-4BC1-B25B-AB78213D0CCE

Now we all know that Blue recently installed Ads onto the website. He gets paid per hit and even though it is just a penny, those pennies can add up. So, thinking only of himself, he hacked Valve, distributed the source to modders who could make a playable build, and had these videos made.

Now these videos are top of the line from the Fanta Shokata website. It must have taken him months to break into their site & add subtitles to the ads.

Well, now at least we know who did this to us. Stop coming here immediately. Blue's hit counters will drop & he'll be starving, eating ramen noodles within a week!! We must fight back!

I am not a game developer, so I have no idea what leaked source code means (as I am sure many of these conspiracy theorists don't either). Could someone please explain to me what exactly this means and why/if HL2 should be delayed?

Basically it means the coding for the game (not the textures, models, sounds or other artwork) was taken from Valve via the internet. Apparently Valve may have lost some of the code if the hacker's deleted parts of it instead of just copying. Valve will likely not suffer any significant loss in sales in either HL2 game or the HL2 engine licensing, because 1) Piracy will always happen, leaked betas/source codes or not, and 2) Any game company using the source code on their next title will be sued out the ass if they don't pay the licensing fees first.

Nobody has EVER cracked Half-Life's WON or Quake3's online authentication systems...

Probably because they're too busy creating CD-Key generators...? Wasn't Microsoft's authentication cracked within like a week of Windows XP being released? And on the more legitimate side, Gamespy made available the XBox Tunnel program so people could play multiplayer games without having to go through XBox Live!

People WILL find a work around... Sure, plenty of companies are going the route of 'net authentication (Adobe and Macromedia most notably) but like Microsoft admitted, it will stop casual copying but not the hardcore hackers. Steam will be cracked, no doubt about it.
