Half-Life 2 Interview

The Half-Life 2 Interview on GameSpot talks with Valve's Gabe Newell at an ATI event where Half-Life 2 would have been unveiled, had it met its original shipping schedule. The conversation covers a variety of topics about what to expect from the game, and the following on the knotty aspects of pinpointing a release date:
I hate release dates because no matter how hard we try, we screw them up. We held back talking about our release date going into September 30 because I wanted to have a much clearer idea of what day we were going to ship on.

Right now all we can say is holidays of this year, which to me feels really unfortunate. Our customers really want to know. They say, "Tell us what the date is going to be," and that's what they want to hear. They're fine with what the date is; they just want to know so they can plan accordingly.

Right now it's for the holidays. I wish we had a clearer date to give people at this time.

beancounter number one (BC1): I have a great idea to estimate how many units we'll move and generate some cash flow!

BC2: Really? How's that?

BC1: When did you say the game would be ready?

BC2: Sometime in the fall or, more likely, closer to the holidays.

BC1: Okay; we'll generate some hype, give them a firm release date of Sept.30. We've kept it under wraps thus far, it'll look awesome!

BC2: I don't think we can make that date...

BC1: So what! Think of the pre-orders!

I'm not really that cynical

Two words:
Bariatric surgery

If we want him around for Half-Life 3 maybe we should all pitch in and pay for his surgery.

I can't imagine how much pressure that guy is on to be eating that much. The entire PC hardware and gaming communities seem to be in a state of limbo waiting for his game to come out. I really feel sorry for him.

do people get so anal about EXACT dates??? When they say "holidays", expect a Christmas present. You CAN wait 'til Christmas, can't you? We're still almost 3 months from that and the difference between December 17 and December 25 at this point don't make much of a difference.

If it was planned to come out "sometime next week", I could see justification for people getting itchy about it. The game will be great no matter what the exact release date is-- and nobody's going to care about release dates 10 seconds after it comes out anyway, so what's the big deal?

edit: had more to say after reading this discussion

So what they didn't make the Sept 30 release date? When have software release dates ever been that accurate anyway? Whether it was done or not, they have more time to develop it, test it, play with it so that we will have a better game to play.

Yeah, it does seem rather fishy, the whole delay, very unlikely that the game needs the extra work, it's either a publisher or steam...ING PILE OF SHIT.

And I think discussion about how he looks etc is really dumb, the man could be sick or something, maybe he spends all the time on this game to make it best for us instead of taking care of himself

Is here ANYTHING he could have said to not be trashed here?

If he hadn't given a release date people would be bitching about that. They didn't hit their expected release date and people are bitching about that. He's apologizing for the error and trying not to make it again and people are bitching.

If it bothers you so much just don't buy the game. Oh, wait, that's too easy, everyone just likes to bitch. I'm surprised no one has worked a money sign into their name around here.

Edit - hey, he cut the mullet.

I still say the main reason for the delay was Vivendi and their desire to time it so it would bolster the next fiscal quarter reports. Valve is taking the extra time to throw a bit more polish on. The reason I'm guessing this scenario is that Valve was very confident of the Sept 30th release date at E3. After the debacle with release dates on the first game I have no doubt that they committed themselves to announcing a date only when they were certain they could make it. Valve isn't a careless company that doesn't learn from its mistakes. On the other hand Vivendi has proven themselves to be about as high on the food chain as pond scum.

they could at least release some lousy screenshots... or some new hq-movies (still some left from the E3 trailer)... but now they're in their black hole again, which is the wrong turn imho as they already openend the gates a bit...

on a different note: Gabe is becoming even more scary!! look at this pic, its from that ATI conference

On the bright side, there is probably no way I would make it through this semester academically "intact" if it had come out the 30th... =D

see that was my thinking too, trouble is for me is that i have my finals next semester (im in england, degree finals here suck badly), so im guessing ill get it at around christmas and then play the crap out of it and then get down to learning and studying.. hopefully Doom 3 will come out then or they will push back until say july next year, yeah, that works good for me,..

Heres something else, he mentions eh wanted to have a much clearer idea of when it was going to ship, implying that the various elements of the game would come together around then, of course the coincidental thing i guess is that its going to be ready at the busiest sales time of the year,..

Stop throwing your rattles out of the crib. You'll be soon enough playing it. I'm sure they could have released a below par HL2 on sept 30th so just shout at a wall and move on or something.

Oh, just shut the fuck up already. Go back hiding with your game untill it's ready like you've already done orgive some actual meaningfull info in the mean time. Even if somehow, I just know they'll keep rehashing the same damn video while not saying anything about MP for another few months.
