For the record, if I set my resolution to 640x480 then I can run the game perfectly smoothly with all of the eyecandy turned on and I only have an Athlon XP 1700 with a Geforce 3 Ti200.

My friend with a 9800 Pro was running it smoothly at 1600x1200 with everything on, and boy oh boy was it sweet - here is a game which really takes advantage of pixel shading.

People keep on bagging Halo SP, and deervedly so in some respects, but I have to say that they crappy moments (Library) are balanced by some very good ones (Silent Cartographer, the tank missions, the final warthog race/track thing). Where the SP shines is in the excellent AI and the great humour that has been injected into it by the sound designers (all the comments by the grunts and marines). Some excellent writing too, and a strong story - something very rare in a FPS.

I just spent three days playing Halo (plus some other games) at a LAN party this weekend and it turned out to be very popular, even amongst those who thought they were going to hate it. After three days we had still had more game-modes we hadn't tried yet, and most of the ones we had played were good fun.

'Stalker' is a great MP mode much like juggernaut where the target is invisible, so you've got one invisible guy going around assasinating people while everyone else is trying to kill him. The guy who kills him becomes the new stalker. We had a great time with this.

One thing I observed was that it was while playing Halo that we heard more laughter and "woah!"s than any of the other games we played that weekend (Raven Shield, Unreal Tournament, Total Annihilation, Rise of Nations and a few I can't remember). This is a great LAN game to be played amongst friends, and one of the most consistently enjoyable multiplayer experiences I have had the pleasure of playing.

Try Chrome. Its been hit by claims its too linear, dodgey AI and not open ended enough. But it is a blast with great graphics, sniping, huge outdoor environments 1 million+ plants and enough freedom to be fun - and it runs great on a geforce 3, paired with and AMD 1.4 Mhz processor at 1024*768. I'm an older gamer and avoid games pushed by hype-dom, if its fun I'll play if, its dull I stop. Don't be too harsh on Halo as it is two years+ old and still stacks up quite well, which is an achevement. Does anyone know why it needs such powerful PCs to do the eyecandy justice though? Is this the real reason why there was no PC version 2 years ago perhaps?

That's a fine key ya get there, Camero76!

You need to submit that to a few warez sites and see how many people take the bait. But I'd use a hotmail account to submit it if I were you...

marathon....mmmmm yeah...some of the best level design ever.

I just started the part where you blow the generators...I'm thinking, "fuck, if they can't even put in the effort to make new levels for this instead of having me trace my way back through the same levels I just did...why the hell should I put in the effort to play them?"

total waste.

Hmm, I still like Halo., but yes, the levels are far less inspired than Marathon, a 2.5D shooter that's 8 years old. (Marathon's levels were good, but I mean, it's the freaking Halo engine...)

Continuing my saga since the OotB thread is about to drop off the radar.

I am not even to the Library level yet and already I'm totally sick of the indoor parts (My mission now is to shut down some generators - I can never remember the chapter names). They couldn't come up with more interesting levels than this? I can really see where the comparisons to Serious Sam (I finished both SS1 and SS:SE) come into play. Also I can see where people question why it took 2 years to bring this game out. Did all these game reviewers even play through the damn game before rating it? The outdoor levels are fine, the indoor levels really bring the game down with the constant monotonous repetition in the architecture and throwing enemies at you. And there seem to be a LOT of indoor levels (enemy ship, halo control, etc.) It's bad enough you have to go through them in one direction, but then you have to backtrack... ugh. I suppose it could be worse, there could be a shitload of jumping puzzles... I so hope you don't get transported to Xen for the game's finale...

This is a 70-75% game at best and not deserving of the hype. And I cannot imagine playing this with an Xbox controller.

For those having troubles, I recommend 800x600, shut off specular, shadowing and decals, and use the 30 fps lock as I am having no slowdowns and the game runs like butter. My drivers are pretty old (Detonator 43.45) though, but it's way smoother than trying to play at 1024x768 with all the details up.

Or better yet, dont buy this shit, just forget about it, dont support lasy developers and greedy publishers and most of all Micro$oft. So we stop geting shit titles on PC, let them stay on consoles where they belong.

this game is inexcusable.
The level design is completely amateurish. The weapon variety is terrible. the gameplay is simply boring and stale. And the whole thing feels like it would have been dated even if it had been released 2 years ago for the PC.

And the crowning insult is the graphics. my god for so few polys onscreen why cant it run at a decent framerate? this is just pathetic. What a colossal waste. I seriously doubt I'd buy another bungie product after two strikes in a row like that. And gearbox. Well they brought us the totally derivative 'opposing force', then that garbage Bond game, now this. How do they get work?

Any know how to force third person perspective?
Many of the screen shots do this, so there must be a way.
There's no obvious console command, but there may be other undocumented ways.

I read something from Randy Pitchford of Gearbox.
He says timedemo is really only useful for comparing systems, not for determining an individual system's performance. It times *everything* from start to stop, including level loading from disc, level init, etc. They plan to fix it up to be a real timedemo for the next patch.

So real FPSs are better than timedemo says.
I use the console command `rasterizer_fps true' to see what's going on in real time.

Nah it doesnt look better, even with geforce4 you can up the res till 1024x768, I figured the framerate is buggin the cpu down not the video on my pc and my cpu is overclocked barton 3400+

I could probably agree about controlls, Halo has the wors character handling I've ever had annoyance to play with.

The XBOX version looks better and actually works. Microsoft probably dicked this copy up on purpose. The Mac version will probably be even worse...

And the really weird part, after you get used the gamepad, the mouse keyboard feels WORSE.
