Half-Life 2 Console Plans

A report on Computer and Video Games (thanks Frans), showing contempt for other site's speculative posts on the topic, gets confirmation from Valve that the Xbox is the only console system currently targeted for a port of Half-Life 2, quoting Doug Lombardi as saying: "At this point, there are no plans to publish a version [of Half-Life 2] for either of Sony or Nintendo's current systems." They then proceed to speculate on the likelihood of PS3 and GameCube 2 versions of the game, based on Doug's comment that: "Valve is obviously interested in hearing more about their [Sony and Nintendo] next-generation plans and discuss the possibilities of doing something with them."

I wish someone would invent a bridging application so console gamers can play against pc gamers online in games like Halo or HL2.

All those people who are convinced joypads are good would get a good beating;)

Well the problem is that the netcode is often changed to be compatible with XBOX live, etc. Otherwise there *are* bridging programs that allow you to connect several XBOXs together over the Internet (using a computer to sniff the packets). There are probably a few games that have close enough netcode that the PC would recognize it, in which case it probably wouldn't be that difficult to make minor modifications to these bridging software to allow PC support, but one would need access to the source code

Gamepads are good, and First Person shooters on consoles are very very playable with them. But obviously the keyboard and mouse will provide you with more accuracy.

But to not experience good games because of this is ridiculous. Sure it takes time to get used to but I can move and aim just fine on a console controller. Not as well as on my PC but I don't complain because like anything else it can be learned and in time mastered.

If Nintendo had any sense left they'd be at Valves door with a dozen roses and their checkbook. It could be one of the few games that could keep the GC from hitting the skids next year.

Wheelchairs are good, too. You can even play basketball with them, it just takes practice.

Why don't you publish it on the PC before you start telling us how cool it'll be to have it on the PS3, okay?

Thanks.

Look, I'm an ardent fan of all three consoles, but the Cube doesn't have the power to push any incarnation of Half-Life 2. Neither does the PS2. And technically, the Xbox doesn't either...unless it's magically more shader-friendly than Nvidia's other hardware, or Valve makes it look like a downtrodden version of the PC game.

DX8 instead of DX9, less AI processing, less psyhics processing and 640x480, I think It might just pull off on xbx.

Well imho it wont be the same HL2 as on PC, the P3-celeron hybrid just doesnt cut it anymore, GF4 on the other hand is still pretty good card, better then FX imho and it could pull this game in low res without the fancy effects.

Remember when halo was supposed to come out for the pc first, but xbox got all of the rights to it and the pc version is coming out..what... just now?
It would be funny as hell if valve gave HL2 to GC and psx2 but not xbox for about a year.
Muhaha payback

Well obviously you'll shoot more accurately if you're running and jumping...Just remember why basketball was ported to the wheelchair.

Maybe we'll all get lucky and Valve will pull a Bungie and at the last minute release HL2 only for XBox and a few years down the road for the PC...

I'm sure Microsoft is drafting up the multi-million dollar offer letter to Valve to release to XBox only as I write this.

Woohooo.

The thing is, Xbx had better spec then high end PC when it launched(video card was bit better then Geforce3 at that time) and now it has shit, lower spec, lower sales, smaller community, bungie was shit back then and they became the most wanted in the console industry, valve is the most wanted in the PC industry where it's much harder to become one, why would they want to become the most hated???
