Half-Life 2 Console Plans

A report on Computer and Video Games (thanks Frans), showing contempt for other site's speculative posts on the topic, gets confirmation from Valve that the Xbox is the only console system currently targeted for a port of Half-Life 2, quoting Doug Lombardi as saying: "At this point, there are no plans to publish a version [of Half-Life 2] for either of Sony or Nintendo's current systems." They then proceed to speculate on the likelihood of PS3 and GameCube 2 versions of the game, based on Doug's comment that: "Valve is obviously interested in hearing more about their [Sony and Nintendo] next-generation plans and discuss the possibilities of doing something with them."

September 30th? Sep 30, 2003, 13:14

I thought for sure someone by now would be saying "Here it is, September 30th, and we are not playing Half-Life 2 as promised. They shouldn't be worrying about a consle port before the PC game is even finished."

Not that I want to say it...

I think that's most developer's main problem with the Cube, compared to the Xbox: 24 less megs of RAM. I didn't think the lower amounts would be a problem (with the supposedly super-fast 1T-SRAM), but I remember reading an interview with the company that ported Red Faction 2 saying it was hard to get it running on the Cube because of less RAM-although it does have more RAM than the PS2...maybe it's just because it's not unified. Can anyone clarify the RAM on the Cube? I'm not sure I remember totally. I do think Half-Life 2 could be ported, though, albeit with a substantial investment-they [iould[/i] rewrite the code completely, using only the maps and scenarios from the original game-it would could a little less than a total game, and carrying the Half-Life name...it could sell very well.

Regardless, I'm playing it on the PC.

Oh, and about joypads vs. kb/m vs. weelchairs? Weelchairs have a few too little buttons. Personally, I prefer a console controller to the kb/m setup for all but FPS and strategy games. For an adventure game, the analog joystick is really a must.

GC has about 40megs of shared system ram. Not 128. The graphics chip is pretty spiffy though.

Look, I'm an ardent fan of all three consoles, but the Cube doesn't have the power to push any incarnation of Half-Life 2.

I'm not so sure. The 'cube uses that ATi Flipper chip thing thats supposed to be quite powerful. Also, the Source engine is supposed to be very scaleable and will be able to run on a 700 mhz CPU. The Cube, being a dedicated gaming rig can get away with less as it doesn't have the added burden of an OS and everything that comes along with it. I beleive it also carries 128mb of RAM which is more than the Xbox. It'd be interesting to hear from a developer on the subject anyhow...

One thing I'm sure everyone can agree on, theres no way in hell it'll run on a PS2

XBox didn't have better spec, I'm sure my PC was faster at the time. Let me think...

Yeah, I had a Pentium 3 667 overclocked to 750. I had 128MB of RAM. The weak link was a Geforce 2 MX card, but that was only because I couldn't afford the Geforce 4s which were out then.

And considering I was behind the curve at the time, I think it's fair to say that PCs were better than the XBox even back then.

As for brand buying... Why not? Sony make damn good audio goods, so if I were to buy a personal stereo I'd make it a Walkman. Creative make very good PC audio stuff, so the jukebox I got is made by them (excusing all the proprietary filesystem crap, it is the nicest of the lot), and Canon make some of the best imaging products in the world, and I'd love to own a scanner, high end printer, and digital camera all made by them.

So sometimes brand loyalty is a good thing.

And put kb/mouse support, same goes for Sony and Nintendo.

I'll never buy a console until they make them kb/mouse supported. There is no way I am playing a FPS with a controller EVER again.

POS controller spoiled my HALO experience completly.

Xbox is also going to have Doom 3 and Deus Ex 2.

And to the guy that mentioned the PS2 and its 904983204943 exclusives... Who gives a shit? Really.

Xbox will have Halo 1/2, Knights of the Old republic, Doom 3, Deus Ex 2, and maybe Half Life 2. I'd take those 6 games over the billion exclusive PS2 games any day of the week.

And by exclusive I mean to the console world. Most good games are also on PC. (GTA 3 VC).

"bungie was shit back then and they became the most wanted in the console industry"

I hope you meant to put a the before shit in that sentence. Bungie has released some of the greatest games of all time (particularly Myth I and II, not to mention the Marathon series). I would continue but it's been beaten to death hundreds of times.

Hardly. The stupid thing has only 64MB of memory. And a PIII 733.

For an extra 20 million dollars from Microsoft, they'll hold off the release to PC for another 6 months.

Buying based on brand is not a bad idea. I buy all my video camera stuff from Sony if I can help it.

I'm so sorry you can't afford an Xbox and you have to play the aliased crap on PS2. One of these days you'll get a job and be able to have the best.

If you fanboys keep buying products based on brands (ie Sony), game developers will continue to put out crap because you're the ones buying the crap.

The thing is, Xbx had better spec then high end PC when it launched(video card was bit better then Geforce3 at that time) and now it has shit, lower spec, lower sales, smaller community, bungie was shit back then and they became the most wanted in the console industry, valve is the most wanted in the PC industry where it's much harder to become one, why would they want to become the most hated???

instead of trying to make a copy of the exclusive GTA. MS should try their hardest to get a console exclusive HL2.

Maybe we'll all get lucky and Valve will pull a Bungie and at the last minute release HL2 only for XBox and a few years down the road for the PC...

I'm sure Microsoft is drafting up the multi-million dollar offer letter to Valve to release to XBox only as I write this.

Woohooo.
