Out of the Blue

I commented at some point in August when things were so busy that this had historically been a fairly quiet month for gaming news in times gone by, but it seems perhaps this summer lull was just a bit delayed, as I don't recall a period as calm as this past week during previous Septembers.

Will it? What will be the alternative ending?

Do you really want to know?

Secret text:

Jim dies. I don't think I can quote within secret text so I'll just "" your text:

"It also seemed a bit too convenient how they managed to nail all the soldiers and get away and survive somewhere. If I'm perfectly honest I was quite looking forward to an ending where everything just went totally wrong and they all got killed."

They did a great job killing off the father right at the entrance of the military base. That seemed almost old testament in a way. The original script was much darker but test audiences hated it. So the director changed the ending to a happier one. The alternate ending is the ending the director originally intended. I can't remember if that is what the original writer wrote or not.

"As a parallel, the ending of 1984 is brilliant because the hero fails - because Winston is broken and the systme wins. Anyway."

Sounds like the alternate is what you are looking for.

But see, that's the irony. Smith is a program (or so we're told) who, as the series goes on and on, displays more and more human-like emotion, even though he says he despises it. He is, in effect, becoming exactly what he's trying to destroy.

I guess, but I feel that that's like the rave scene... the idea may be sound but the execution was poor. They didn't make Smith human, they made him into a cheesy action movie character. I don't know, I think Hugo Weaving does a great job and makes it work, but just barely.

Secret text follows, to save any more spoilers...

I agree that the first half was better than the second half. The film seemed to switch tracks halfway through, once they found the soldiers. Plus the head soldier guy was clearly a tool. It just seemed to get a bit lost halfway through. It also seemed a bit too convenient how they managed to nail all the soldiers and get away and survive somewhere. If I'm perfectly honest I was quite looking forward to an ending where everything just went totally wrong and they all got killed.

As a parallel, the ending of 1984 is brilliant because the hero fails - because Winston is broken and the systme wins. Anyway.

... especially completely cheapening the character of Agent Smith. Goddamnit, he's not supposed to have cheesy one-liners and evil cackles! I mean, his "humanity is a virus" speech from the first film wasn't exactly breathtakingly original, but I liked it, it worked. Now he's saying shit like "Mr. Anderson... we missed you," along with all the dumb crap he did in the second movie.

there are plenty of moron politicians in EVERY state (and nation for that matter).

Of course that's true. The stereotype of a Republican senator from the South makes me think of a grouchy old bible-thumping conservative saying things like "50 million Americans can't be wrong," even though it's just that, a stereotype... there are enough people like that though that one can see where such a stereotype would come from.

As for The Matrix, I disagree that it's a crappy franchise. I think the Matrix universe is very enticing and worthy of exploration, as I think The Animatrix demonstrated well. The Revolutions trailer looked cool to me, but it seems like they're making some of the same mistakes as Reloaded... especially completely cheapening the character of Agent Smith. Hopefully after seeing Revolutions, Reloaded will seem better, even though that shouldn't be so. I dunno, seems like they're playing it up as this huge climactic ending, which they should, and so it looks cool. I just hope they don't drop the ball.

...Tarrantino had around 4 hours of movie and either had to cut it down into something he wasn't happy with or release it in two parts.

That's why the Matrix film became three films. And a little collection of short films. And a video game. Because they had a cubic assload of material, but no one wants to sit through a 10 hour movie.

but what I believed happened was that Terrantino (sp?) had around 4 hours of movie and either had to cut it down into something he wasn't happy with or release it in two parts.

I'd heard this also. He chose to have a large film in 2 parts instead of a regular film that was heavily edited.

BTW, if you're after the matrix trailer, try it now...looks like WB finally threw more servers online, as I just got the 46 meg version with no problems (200k a second).

I'm DEFINATELY not seeing it in theaters, though, because they decided to split it into two movies. Capitalist pigs. As if you don't charge enough for ONE movie.

I'm sure you're right to an extent... but what I believed happened was that Terrantino (sp?) had around 4 hours of movie and either had to cut it down into something he wasn't happy with or release it in two parts. Seeing how Terrantino is as big as he is right now he got his way and the two part release was really a win for him. So even though it'll be in two parts, we won't have to wait for some special edition DVD to see the movie as it was meant to be seen.
