Ships Ahoy: Zero Hour & Breakthrough

EA Games has announced that a pair of their expansion packs have shipped to stores. Both Medal of Honor Allied Assault Breakthrough and Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour have shipped. Word on Zero Hour is: "The first expansion pack to one of the best-selling PC games of 2003, Command & Conquerâ„¢ Generals, Zero Hour gives players more weapons, more power, new battlefields, three new single player campaigns, 15 new missions, and new game modes." The skinny on Breakthrough is: "Published under the EA GAMES(tm) brand, the new expansion pack for the critically acclaimed hit title Medal of Honor(tm) Allied Assault takes players from combat with Rommel in North Africa to the heart of Italy in the struggle to breakthrough the fortified lines of the Third Reich." Thanks Frans.

...reviews of MoH: Breakthrough and the general consensus seems to be that it's nothing special at all.

Yeah, those reviews really turned me off despite my interest in the historical aspects.

Got 0 Hour instead. So far the USA campaign has been a bit overwhelming (Need to control multiple sections of the map, not all new units properly introduced, etc.) but I have no doubt I'll get the hang of it soon.

I have to say that disregarding gameplay I prefer General's Hollywood-style depiction of "What If?" near-future-world scenarios so much more than WC's "A Cliche Every Minute" fantasy world. Just like the pseudo-tactical FPSs of old, the cheeky nod to realism adds that extra layer of immersion.

RE ATI Problem: Under advanced options, turn off heat effects. It's the microwave tank that has the problem.

I'm a huge Generals fan also, for some reason war3 never caught on for me. It's definately the extreme units and the hi-tech theme that I prefer..

The only thing I don't like about zero hour is that some of the generals are pretty weak. Try a 4 player game with the China infantry general, you'll see what I mean...

I am not much of a Fanboy for anything. I do however have to say that the ZERO HOUR expansion ROCKS.
It looks better, improved on units, gives you much more to configure and tinker with. Multiplayer games 2 vs 2 or higher should prove very entertaining, since you never know exactly what Generals you face.
Now that I mention that I love it... I need to post this!

!!!!PROBLEM!!!!! BUG !!!!!PROBLEM!!!!

Seems like ATI cards have an issue with some special units and/or ability of units. You build a certain unit or use the special ability that area of the screen goes dark.
So far I only seen it when playing the American Laser General. But it might be in other areas too.

But after playing a bit with the expansion, I can say right now it's superior to the original. I really don't do MP with my RTS games so the SP campaigns are really up my alley. I love the generals campaigns where you face off vs. another general. I've never laughed out loud during a game in a long while until I heard the enemy general taunts. That segment of the game is worth the price of admission alone. Moreover, the opening splash screen when you face off against a specific general shows a big "VS" which reminded me of old Mortal Combat arcade games. Just lovely. Just give it a shot even if you have the original and were disappointed.

On WC3 TFT, wow, although I feel it's superior to the vanilla version, it has one fatal flaw - diminished strategic depth due to the Hero leveling concept ie. you only have ONE group that fights together ALL the $@@#!! time. That's what makes Generals ZH so much more enjoyable than WC3 TFT - interesting units that level up and diverse strategic options.

Of course, IMHO.

I don't like the way it looks when armies in WC3 mash together in a giant chaotic melee... I prefer to be able to easily see specifically what is going on in the battle. I also like the more "extreme" units Generals has. A scud launcher can anihilate several tanks or a couple dozen infantry with a single strike, but dies to just a few tank shells. Even the most badass ranged unit in WC3 will take several hits just to kill a single enemy... much less a group of enemies.

All in all, I found I could not get into WC3... but found Generals (mulitplayer) to be a blast.

Yeah same here. While I think that WC3 had better overall design I played many more hours of and had an overall more enjoyable experience with Generals. I also dislike how people try to blow up WC3 into some amazingly revolutionary title that melded RTS and RPG. Warlords: Battlecry anyone?

If you like Generals but not War3 you have issues.

Guess I have issues. I couldn't stand the maximum number of units you can select at once and hated the whole way you had to micromanage unit abilities. The only unit thats remotely similar in that respect is the USA missile soldier, who can laser designate, but only if you select the ability.

W3 has always struck me to be a pain in the ass to play in terms of mechanics, and from this shared genre of RTS I can only be bothered with something fun. If I wanted serious RTSing, I'd boot up Medieval: Total War... it also just never captured my imagination, I profess to a mild dislike of the whole theme.

I like them both I guess I am the minority! Warcraft is rush first then tech. In generals it's alittle more defensive from what I have played. A defeneless base with a Col.Berton can wrech havoc in your base.

I never got into Starcraft and Warcraft games. I am the type of person who likes military theme. WC3 and SC themes aren't for me. I don't see how that is issues to C&C fans.

I err borrowed this one when it first came out and I could not stand it. Everything about it is terrible, but I guess there are always those few people who can find anything fun (nascar). The UI is horrid, and the gameplay stank. If you like Generals but not War3 you have issues.

Nope, it's way more like Starcraft.

Memorizing build-orders and hotkeys are the order of the day with Generals.

I was just like that when I first started. I was thinking warcraft III when I was playing. Well guess what? IT'S NOT WARCRAFT III! You need to make tons and TONS of units. It's amazing how a 1000 credit unit can wipe out 3000 credits of infantry with one naplam strike I got the expanshion from EB yesterday. At the moment I am playing the single player compaign so I get used to the units and experiment before I start playing the Koreans.

The game does require alot of patience thought. You need to make units right as soon your barracks is constructed. Also a few (2) anti-tank and (2)anti-infantry units. That alone saved my butt in many occasions when someone decided to rush me

I got Zero Hour ordered at Compusa online. With 20% off and 1 penny overnight shipping which made the deal sweeter. Can't beat $25.44 shipped free overnight. I was a Generals beta tester and I've loved it ever since. I haven't played it much in the last few months but this expansion should really add a lot more playability to this already great RTS.
