Half-Life 2 Delayed

Shacknews has finally received official word that Half-Life 2 will not be making its planned release date of September 30, something a quick glance at the calendar can confirm. Here's the quote from Valve's Doug Lombardi:
The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date.

This thread makes me fear for humanity.

In other news - I could care less. I'm looking forward to this game more than any other, but this will give me time to check out Halo, time to wait until components get cheaper before I build a new PC, and time to finish that Jagged Alliance 2 campaign I'm in the middle of.

Oh my, what a surprise.

Whether this is because of Steam, or because of other reasons, who really cares? Valve just played the media game, and played it well.

My guess is that HL2 is more or less ready to go, and that what is holding things up is all this Steam nonsense. If there were still significant fixing to do on HL2, enough so that they could not make their release date, they would have known long before now.

The whole Steam project smells of nothing so much as a last-minute idea that grew, as software projects often grow, out of hand. It's called "creeping featurism", and it most frequently happens when someone who doesn't listen to his software engineers is calling the shots.

I can't help but think that this delay is primarily down to them wanting to 'sort out' the STEAM delivery platform. They must have ploughed some decent £££ into that project and are probably determined to deliver HL2 via it, even if the game is delayed by X months.

I don’t know why they stuck so rigidly to the 30th Sept up till now. There’s nothing wrong with saying we’ll release it when it’s done.

The arseholes at Valve just like fuelling the hype machine.

By the way, anyone who didn't see this coming is completely naive. Half Life owns this christmas now that DOOM 3 is out of the picture. They don't need to be in a hurry, and they are taking advantage of that fact.

Hmmmm, I dunno if D3 won't really be published this year... Check this out:

"When are you hoping to have the game out?

Hollenshead: [laughs] The official release date is: "When it's done." We're not actually working towards any specific date, we just want to get towards the experience we're aiming for, then we'll worry about dates once we've done that.

We do not anticipate that we're going to be done this year, but we're working to get the game finished as soon as we can. As soon as we know the release date, trust us, we'll let you know..."

i bet id is feeling stupid now for pushing back doom3 so they could have doom3 release 3-4 months after half life 2 to boost sales, and how half life 2 will be coming out damn near the same time as doom3. oh well, half life 2 still has my money over doom3 as far as what game i buy first.

I'm sure id couldn't care less what Valve does. Doom3 is going to come out when it's finished, just like every other id game. There was no "delay", because they never set an unrealistic release date, just some generalized estimates of when they thought it would be done.
And at least id has produced more than one successful product in their entire life time.

Will someone explain to these people that the retail stores don't know anything when it comes to release dates. They're as much in the dark as us.

You can't go by the dates on the sites anymore than you can go by the dates that I tell you (November the 5th, Guy Fawkes Night)

Im sorry to say this but this was already known. About a month ago EBgames.com posted that HL-2 would be released 11/14/2003. I don't know if this is the real deal but hey i knew this a month ago.

somebody's prolly already said this, but why on earth did they bother coming out after a 5 year silence with such a specific date. they could have just said soon or holiday season although can't say I'm surprised, the original Half Life was delayed too.

can't wait for the next confirmed date to change

the thing that bothers me though, is that this is coming from only ONE source.. and the way they put it on halflife2.net, they make it sound as if shacknews may very well be making this up.

Now I'm not as stupid to still believe it's actually coming out on sept 30th, but the fact is we're still being bullshitted by Valve, because we're only hearing it from one source, so it's like they're saying "go ahead, wonder if it's true or not, we don't mind the free publicity."

Is is that hard to send a mass email to a bunch of sites?
