DOOM 3 Q&A, Previews

There's another DOOM 3 Q&A on GameArena talking with id Software's Tim Willits and Todd Hollenshead at the Activision Activate conference in Asia. Likewise, GameArena's DOOM 3 Preview is also online, GameSpy.com's DOOM 3 Preview has been posted, and there are DOOM 3 Single-Player Impressions on GameSpot where they also recap their session with the upcoming shooter remake as shown off by Willits and Hollenshead. They offer impressions of the gameplay and the atmosphere created by the new game engine, both of which can be found in this quote:
The flashlight is present in both single-player and multiplayer modes. It serves as an exploration tool that realistically cuts through shadows, and it also serves as a last-ditch-effort melee weapon. But if you have your flashlight in hand, you don't have any kind of decent weapon equipped. This point was driven home by the sudden appearance of another zombie, who leaped from the shadows of the heretofore strangely quiet hallway. As we dodged away from it, we watched as it lunged for us and closed its arms around thin air in a failed attempt to grab us before we blasted it. We also came to a short stairway. At the top of the stairs was a heavyset zombie who noted our presence. He then grabbed a nearby barrel and hurled it at us. We dodged the barrel, but it tumbled off to the side, and the sound of it crashing to the ground reverberated realistically around us.
Also, IGN quotes unnamed sources in reporting that "progressive metal band Tool is doing an original song for Doom 3." Update: There is yet another DOOM 3 preview on Eurogamer (thanks Frans).

Anybody else like the idea of looking around with the flashlight, seeing a baddie running towards you, grabbing the pistol and shooting wildly into the dark?

I think it would be more appropriate to use both gun and flashlight, each on one hand and both hands together (crossed iirc). Isnt that the way "cops" do?

At least in the movies...

Or maybe the pistol could be used with the torch but nothing else. I suppose they know best.

Yeah, I think it's perfectly alright for them to want to build tension by making flashlight use a trade-off... but I find it absolutely ridiculous to imagine that this Uber Space Marine couldn't manage to grip a pistol and flashlight at the same time. That's just silly.

Doom 3 retells the story of the original Doom, and, as such, you still play as a lone space marine in a base on the Phobos moon of Mars in the year 2145.

Not that it'll make a huge difference, as most of this takes place indoors, but they've already said that it's not on Phobos or Diemos anymore. The game takes place ON MARS. No gravity on those moons to show off a phancy physics engine with.

Why must they tell us nothing new, Oh Lord!?

I can't think of a better group to do music for this game. Any musician that has written songs based on Fibonacci should qualify as geeky enough to work with JC and Company.

'This ended the "game" portion of our demonstration, and Willits wrapped things up by booting up a small tech demo that consisted of a room with a tower of 100 boxes stacked on top of each other. As Willits shot out one of the boxes near the bottom, the entire stack collapsed, with boxes falling and bouncing in different ways. Reloading the level and then spawning a humanoid model into the room, Willits then picked up the body and swung it into the stack, causing the boxes to fall yet again and bounce off the body in various ways.'

Heh, for all the 'we don't worry about what the competition is up to. I'm sure their game will be great too' I've heard from both valve and id this smells alot like 'anything you can do...'

To be honest, this is what healthy competition is all about. I have a hunch feeling that id had no real intention of implimenting such gameplay until HL2 showcased which is why we're seeing it so late in the dev cycle. Both games will sell bucketloads, but perhaps one will be remembered as one of those defining advances in gameplay above the other, and perhaps why id are doing this now.

We're getting conflicting signals here. On the one hand, id is saying they don't plan on being done by the end of the year (per last's night's posted interview). But they seem to be doing A LOT of interviews lately.

So are they past the crunch and in the final stretch? Or are they so far from being done (say, summer of next year) that they took time off to do interviews?

I realize not every single person at id works on D3 every single day. But someone seems to have time to do previews and interviews.

I think it's likely (though perhaps not indicated) that a lot of these are Quakeworld interviews that finally got typed up and perhaps passed an NDA date...

dont trust your feelings, as they're very wrong...

no really, id has implemented their physics engine right from start; it was also demonstrated in the E3 2002 demo, though it was far from finished (as just one zombie reacted with the ragdoll effect)...

what the autor means, is the demonstration by putting the boxes and let them collapse like Valve had shown with the barrels in their E3 demo and put so much attention on their physics stuff; as it seemed that everyone thought "uh, that's cool" id probably wanted to show their physics system in a similar way...

I think that once you switch from your flashlight to a pistol/shotgun/flamethrower etc. that the muzzle flash will put off some light, and it should look spectacular! You just don't want to be shooting all the time to find your way, that's a waste of ammo and it might trigger an alarm from the ai and they will come swarming.

"don't want to be shooting all the time to find your way" I am only talking referring to those area's that are very dark.

Actually, if I remember right, JC's part is basically done
and it's everyone else that's finishing up their stuff.

I'm not sure about Tool doing the soundtrack, though...

I friggin' LOVE Tool...more than I ever did NIN(And I
listened to them a LOT when I was younger). But Reznor
has done a few soundtracks and I don't believe Tool has,
either. Of course, they're doing an 'original song' for
Doom 3 which means it's not an ST song, but a 'song'.

After getting a bit of backstory from another marine wounded on the ground, our character was able to gain some more info from his PDA, which is another vehicle DOOM 3 uses to advance the plot. You can get mission objectives from your PDA, as well as e-mails clueing you in to the overall story.

Can anyone say "System Shock" ?

It's a conspiracy. During the time when there has been precisely no new HL2 news (and now one week away from the original HL2 date), there's been a glut of Doom3 news. Coincidence? Hah! id and Valve are clearly working together to stir gamers into a heady froth.

"We then got a glimpse of Doom 3's interpretations of the series' classic monsters, like Doom II's revenant, which appears as a tall, flaming skeleton with a pair of rocket launchers strapped to its shoulders. Rather than blanket you with flames, as they did in Doom II, revenants pelt you with fiery rockets from a distance when they can't get in close for a swipe."

Anyone else notice anything wrong with this statement?
