DOOM 3 & DX9

With all the discussion lately about how Half-Life 2 will run on ATI hardware compared with NVIDIA accelerators, BonusWeb.cz shot off an email to id Software's John Carmack to ask how DOOM 3 and other games are likely to be impacted by the difference between the two graphics platforms running DirectX 9. Here's how he responded:
Unfortunately, it will probably be representative of most DX9 games. Doom has a custom back end that uses the lower precisions on the GF-FX, but when you run it with standard fragment programs just like ATI, it is a lot slower. The precision doesn't really matter to Doom, but that won't be a reasonable option in future games designed around DX9 level hardware as a minimum spec.

Well, if that wasn't a warning shot across the bow of ATI owners, I don't know what is...

HAhaha, FX is totaly wasted. I bet even with "special lower image quality path" it would still lose to Ati

Maybe I'm confused but isnt that more of a warning shot for Nvidia owners. Your game will need custom graphics paths other than called for by DX9 spec to run. Or maybe I've just got more marbles lose today...

Forget video cards!
If I water cooled my monitor, would it help me get better FPS!?

My theory on water cooling the monitor, bring a hose in through the window, and turn it on. Drill a hole through the desk and the floor, for the water to drain.

Any thoughts on this idea?

I doubt you'll get better FPS, but think of the refresh rate. I just hope there will be new benchmark so I can look cool on the interweb with my 325Hz at 1024*768 monitor (o/c'ed from 85Hz).

It's a shot across the bows of the Nvidia FX owners, not ATI, since it says that the speed problems of the FX running in standard DX9 with accuracy at the intended levels will occur in all DX9 generation games that do not specifically allow the FX to take advantage of the low precision (non-standard) settings.

Despite the protestations of NVidia, we've just seen two of perhaps the three most influential graphics engine developers say that their fragment program speed under standard DX9 sucks. All you'd need now is Epic to say the same and you'd have a full house.

Hey this really isnt the topic to bring this up but seeing as how were on vid cards anyways...the ATI all in wonder 9800 has a tv tuner thing, do those need some sort of service to run (monthly payments) or can you just hook your cable up to it and it will work fine?

HL2 and Doom3 are still ways away from being released, so why bother competing cards at this point?

gamers, ATI, and nVidia all know that HL2 and Doom3 are killer-apps of 2003/4, i'm sure by the time the games come out, each company would come up with something that would be fairly close in terms of performance.

and please, NO MORE 'VIII' previews!

" Well, if that wasn't a warning shot across the bow of ATI owners, I don't know what is..."

What... that Doom3 was dumbed down and customized for nVidia. I'm sure ATI is quaking is their precision boots.

You do not pay a monthly service. It just converts the video signal to something the computer can display.

Sounds to me like he's saying ATI and NVidia hardware run it about the same when you factor in the lower precision pathways for the NVidia hardware (which doesn't produce a significant effect in terms of quality), but when you try to run them both through the same standard pathways, NVidia's GF\FX hardware chugs through it.

So Carmack has basically validated ATI's test results and acknowledged that the problem is due to shader precision. His statement also shows that this HL2 issue is not necessarily because "ATI and Valve are in bed and the codebase is optimized for ATI at the expense of Nvidia". Seems like Nvidia's cards really do have a DX9 deficiency. The Det50 drivers better work some magic, or Nvidia will be in big trouble. But I'm VERY skeptical that the Det50's will totally fix this problem.

"HL2 and Doom3 are still ways away from being released, so why bother competing cards at this point?"

Incorrect. Only Doom3 is still ways away from being released. HL2 is just a matter of weeks.

sure Ted, that is what he has to say about games like doom3. but he is also saying that, unlike doom3, dx9 level games will have to look uglier and/or run slower on an fx.
