Spaceships Ahoy: Homeworld 2

VU Games sends word that Relic's Homeworld 2 has shipped to North American retailers. Here's the entirety of the short press release:
LOS ANGELES, CA (September 16, 2003)- Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) announced today that Homeworld(r)2, the sequel to 1999's award-winning, space-based real-time strategy game, Homeworld, has shipped to retailers nationwide.

Homeworld 2, the sequel to one of 1999's highly acclaimed real-time strategy games, returns players to the helm of the most powerful space armada in the universe as they battle to keep their home. The highly-anticipated follow up title includes multiplayer competition for up to six players, in addition to an engrossing single-player saga.

Developed by Relic Entertainment, Homeworld 2 features a brand new game engine capable of creating startling space effects like dust gas clouds, wispy nebulae, and ghostly derelict hulks of space ships rendered with spectacular Hollywood-style special effects. Homeworld 2 is also packaged with tools for players to easily create custom content, including multiplayer maps.

"The original Homeworld was a groundbreaking title in the real-time strategy genre," said Luc Vanhal, President & COO of VU Games. "We feel that Homeworld 2 beautifully combines the captivating nature of the original title, while offering a host of improvements that our audience can enjoy. We're proud to offer this game as a continuation of the esteemed Homeworld franchise."

Homeworld 2 is being developed for the PC for a suggested retail price of $49.99 with a "Teen" rating by the Entertainment Software Rating Board. For more information, log on to http://www.homeworld2.com.

Just played a few missions in the full version. Nothing new, but if you loved HW1 and liked the HW2 demo, you will not be dissapointed.

*Back to HW2 spaceshipbattleage*

Edit: just forgot to tell ya, there still is that FSAA problem that some people noticed in teh demo. 2X up to 4x wont work att all, 8x fsaa is the only thing that works, but that will get you insanely low fps.

Ctrl+B closes the research menu. Hitting B again will cycle through your build ships (so if you have multiple carriers hitting b will move to them.

Check the bound keys for more info.

ESC does work..but you have to hit it a few times. but no, hitting B will get you to the build menu, tapping it again does nothing.

oh, btw, so far it has crashed to desktop twice on me...first time I don't recall what I was doing at the moment..2nd time I was zooming in from sensors manager. only thing I got running in the background is a browser and bittorrent (downloading 2nd tron demo)

sigh..I'll say it again...I suck at RTS...CPU is handing my ass to me. Bastard is devious too..sends scouts at the far range of sensors to watch what I'm building and sends units that counter them...build ion frigates, it builds bombers, build gunships, it builds pulsar gunships...build torpedo frigates, it builds ions..etc etc....too busy building my fleet up to build some scouts to go after his scouts...grrr

and CPU actually retreats when its losing...kudos to relic...forget how graphics aren't special...I give props to their AI writers

Esc works for closing the menus and last time I checked so did the hotkey. I may be wrong on that because I ussually just hit esc on instinct.

so far the only thing I find really annoying which someone else mentioned..is that you can't toggle the menus with the key that activates them...I want to be able to quickly tap B to build something..and B again to have the menu go away...same with R for research, I don't think ESC works on it either..as far as I know you HAVE to click that close box...which is highly distracting and slow

Also maybe I need to learn more tactics of the game but I want to know a way to easily attack a group of ships,

Hold down CTRL and drag a box around the ships you want to attack. I don't know if its even possible to play the game without that command.

Oh I guess i meant "design flaws" like one i noticed about the chat system in multiplayer where you have to click the chat button to bring up the chatbox but then you gotta click the box with the mouse instead of just typing, so you end up giving wrong orders to your ships. I'm not sure if they got normal hotkeys for chat like most games but I think i looked.
Another thing i dont like is this yellow line that extends from the menu when you got a carrier or the mother ship, too many times Ive thought "wtf is this yellow line going to" it's pretty pointless but really distracting.
Also maybe I need to learn more tactics of the game but I want to know a way to easily attack a group of ships, instead of focusing attack on 1 ship.

Why do I bring up these nitpicky things, cause nowadays you can't buy a game for less then 50 bucks and on top of that you'll HAVE to buy the 30 dollar expansion they're gonna put out in 2 months, because if you don't you'll have no one to play with in multiplayer.

Oh yea, and in the demo the multi is fairly bugged cause most of the time it says games are full, and it's hard to configure to host if you got a router.

Fix all these things and throw in a free expansion and Ill pay 30 bucks

I'm personally going to get the game. The only problem I've got with this is that unlike the previous incarnations (ie Homeworld 1 & Cata) you can not build mutiliple units with the mothership and are limited to producing only one unit at a time with the mothership. I guess that's why they 've got carriers and shipyards but still...And what exactlly are you talking about WarPig? The game is still not out and all the reviews i've read so far dont say anything about bugs that need fixing. If you've got some insider info plz share, otherwise dont pull things out of thin air bud.

What a sappy and pathetic rationalization process. "Waaah, you are saying things I don't like, so I won't buy that game, because you made me think bad thoughts."

No. 24, are you ever going to stop with your obvios shilling for Starscape? It's really tacky the 3way you dump on Homeworld but can't do it without specifically trying to redirect people to Starscape.

I actually checked out the screenshots and you must be kidding about it being anything near Homeworld 2 in graphical quality. At any rate your kind of shilling feels creepy to me and makes me feel like the developer is shady. As such, I'm specifically NOT going to buy Starscape because of that alone. Sorry. But your marketing tactic stinks.

yeah, the demo wasn't really that special in my opinion. I'm still getting it (once this semester is paid for anyway) just cuz I like the story and yeah, I stink at RTS games too, but this one I just like.

kinda nice you don't have to buy individual fighters now and can get whole squadrons. other than that, it still seemed like the original game. but hey, there is a whole lot of game we haven't seen yet.

I tried the demo for this game. It's like controlling ant sized space craft but there is no control. They pretty much fight on their own. Basically, aim ship here, ship fights, dies, rinse, repeat. The graphics aren't even impressive - I've seen recent arcade style games that have better graphics - like Starscape http://www.moonpod.com - at least with that game you control the ship.

I just found Homeworld 2 to be a vast boring, nothingness, no frills, space-non-adventure.
