New Steam Client

The promised new version 1.0 of the Steam client has been released. The non-beta version of the broadband content delivery/DRM system can be downloaded from 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileRush (Bit Torrent), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, Jucaushii.ro, Loadedinc (registration required), and Worthplaying. While fears have been expressed that Valve is tracking Kazaa shenanigans and such with SpyWare (thanks Cletus), the last post on this Halflife2.net forum thread (thanks Frans) clarifies that this is an unanticipated glitch on FAT32 hard drives from software that was only tested on NTFS systems, and no SpyWare is involved (so your Justin and Kelly obsession will remain your secret).

Thanks for those links to the Quake 3 mods for Urban Terror and True Combat, I bought Q3 when it first came out but it had lost its appeal with all the bright colors and strange CTF maps, just wasnt like the Old Threewave CTF and TF, but those mods look killer, I for one am downloading and trying them, I didnt realized there were Q3 mods that looked that good. LONG LIVE Q3 and DOOM3 down with VALVE and STEAM hehe.

I have Blues as a start page, I have visited this site since it was just Quake 1 content, I just started an account to post on STEAM. I am old and set in my ways, Gamespy 3d and WON for DOD, NS and TF and CS worked fine, why the hell not leave it that way. Let them use STEAM for the new junk. I tried the Beta of Steam and it sucked, and it still sucks, and why the heck does it embedd itself into your system without asking, and where the hell is the uninstall, there isnt one. I had to manually delete registry entries and files in my hl folders. Give us the VAC for won and keep your dang steam to yourselves, use it on valves lan or something. Arggghhh.

Has anyone got a contact at CGW, PCG or any of the other mags? Maybe we can make this an 'issue', for the editorial page and get some negative press.

Uh, one thing that worries me though, why has my HD been chattering for a solid 15 minutes so far when I started it up this AM? Maybe Steam is telling me I need to defrag the HD. I'm growing to appreciate how Steam makes more and more decisions for me without me having to worry my pretty little head about it.

Vote with your wallet.

I will not be buying HL2 until steam is no longer required to play (online or single player).

Stupid ass company forcing shitty software on me. F*ck 'em

Ahhh... Doom 3... no f*cked up software required.

First I tried to get Steam through their website listed installer - waste of time so I downloaded the fileplanet HL+CS install. Crawled downstairs to make breakfast (hangovers suck) and by the time I'd finished I was ready to install. Worked fine. CS and HL no problem. Eventually figured out that when I click on another game to get it to install then I should just leave in for ten minutes to do some thinking. 12 hours after starting out I have 2 computers (and 2 accounts) fully up to speed. Still getting my ass handed to me in CS so no change there then.
The hardest part was digging out the old install disks with the CD keys on them.
Now I'm pretty certain I'll take advantage of the Steam subscription to download HL2. $9.99 to play a game that would normally cost me $40.00 then once I've got the single player game out of my system I'll uninstall Steam and put the whole sorry idea behind me. Nice.

Anybody know a good site to track game statistics?

I would be interested to see, on average how many people were playing CS, at this time of day, on a Saturday, for the past 4 weeks. And then see how many people are playing to do, with all the steam goodness happening!

D/L'ed Steam - as an IT project manager, I try to be a good user and support VALVes initiatives.

Took 2 hours to update my CS. Yeah, that sucked. Although there was a good program on NASA Channel that featured Astronaut Tom Stafford.

In CS - finally - went to bring up the Options menu, nothing happened for 5 minutes (I actually timed it). CS 'not responding' - mad traffic on my router.

Restarted - looked for support. "Steam forums will be back up shortly."

Posted this message on Blues.

Uninstalled Steam.

Glad this isn't my project.

It's like Valve thinks the entire world revolves around their games. I play through HL SP maybe once a year, then I do the few SP mods that have come out, buy the two expansion packs, but that's it for me and Valve games. The rest of the year I don't even think about them. I'll only bother to download a patch when a mod requires it.

I know there are gamers who are CS junkies, they play CS several times a week, they want the mods and the patches, their worlds DO revolve around Valve. Sounds like Steam is exactly their thing.

When you've labored away and obsessed over something like HL2 for five years, when the net goes crazy with excitement when people finally hear about it, when you're used to seeing every other game on Earth compared endlessly to yours as the gold standard for five years ... I guess it's easy to lose your head a little, set yourself up as a god and start to believe every gamer is as obsessed with HL 1 and 2 as you are.

But it's just a game. Most of us plunk down our fifty bucks, spend hopefully 20 or 30 hours playing it, then forget about it and play something else. Most of us aren't waiting on the edge of our seats for the next patch. We're not frantic to download the latest mods. We're not saving up to buy the next Valve game the second it's released. We don't dream about Valve, doodle little Valve logos while chatting on the phone. We don't name our kids Gabe.

There's the CS and MP junkies and there's the rest of us (not to imply anything demeaning about them -- Hell I was a UT junky for years), and Steam has to make you wonder if Valve even believes the rest of us exist. I have no problem with Steam as a concept, some people are just going to love it. But the rest of us don't want this huge, obtrusive presence lurking on our hard drive, always listening to our internet waiting to download, upgrade, patch just so we can play a single, fucking Valve game every few months or so! I like SP mods. Am I going to have to deal with this ugly thing when I want to spend 8 or 10 hours maybe twice or three times a year when Neil Manke or Joe Blow or whoever releases some little thing?

I don't for a second think Steam is some plot by a greedy Valve to bilk us out of more money. Though I think a desire to reduce piracy and cheating are a part of their motivation, mostly I think they truly believe they're making something convenient, designed to make gaming easier. I mean, who in their right mind wouldn't be thrilled to get the very latest patches and mods and expansions the day they're released? Most of us, actually. I just don't think Valve can conceive of that.

Message to Valve: It's just a game. Get over yourselves. Why make this huge unnecessary production out of the whole thing?

Sometimes when you click edit it will not work right (this has always been a problem)
Just try going back to the message board and hit edit again.
Sometimes I think that the server will not let you post, and edit the post on the same minute. So if you got it in, at the very start of a min, and then wanted to edit immediately, and the server was still in the same minute, it will not let you.

But it does work, just try it a second time
