New Steam Client

The promised new version 1.0 of the Steam client has been released. The non-beta version of the broadband content delivery/DRM system can be downloaded from 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileRush (Bit Torrent), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, Jucaushii.ro, Loadedinc (registration required), and Worthplaying. While fears have been expressed that Valve is tracking Kazaa shenanigans and such with SpyWare (thanks Cletus), the last post on this Halflife2.net forum thread (thanks Frans) clarifies that this is an unanticipated glitch on FAT32 hard drives from software that was only tested on NTFS systems, and no SpyWare is involved (so your Justin and Kelly obsession will remain your secret).

Same thing here, going on 20 mins. I figure I'll let it do that while I'm at work, and if I come back and it's still fucked, then I'll be pissed.

I love it how companies love to fuck with a good thing, just makes life interesting.

I’m currently sitting at a screen that says

Converting Base Goldsrc Shared Binaries files into steam cache...complete
Converting Half-Life files into steam cache...

It’s been like this for 15 min… no activity on my computer. Even the beta wasn’t this bad.

Was going to install this, but comments like these have kept me away so far as well..

Guess I'll wait until I absolutely need this thing in order to play their fancy game.

I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me.

oh yeah, and it saves a 70mb file when it exist but doesnt say why. while its saving this (takes about a minute) you can't start steam again.

This makes restarting really slow and stupid.

it is pretty awful..

Crashes for me when i try to add deathmatch classic, and if i click on the calculate cache space or whetevr it is.

Locks up when launching a game for the first time (presumably because its allocating space on the hard drive, it would be nice for it to tell you thats what its doing with maybe a status bar).

Skinning seems to comprimise of changing the color.

It doesn't seem to have made much progress from the beta apart from the import stuff which locked up when attempting to do NS.

Is it supposed to be sluggish, unresponsive and prone to crashing?
So far is used up an extra 1.17GB on my harddrive with its "SteamApps" and when i ask it to do anything like, oh, play counterstrike, it locks up.

What is this actually supposed to be used for?
I'm always nervous of applications that just sit for AGES and don't tell you what they're doing. I'd look at the documentation on their website, but, of course, its down.

Anyone else in this predicament, or just me?
