New Steam Client

The promised new version 1.0 of the Steam client has been released. The non-beta version of the broadband content delivery/DRM system can be downloaded from 3D Downloads, 3D Gamers, Boomtown (registration required), Computer Games Online, FileRush (Bit Torrent), Gamer's Hell, Games Fusion, Jucaushii.ro, Loadedinc (registration required), and Worthplaying. While fears have been expressed that Valve is tracking Kazaa shenanigans and such with SpyWare (thanks Cletus), the last post on this Halflife2.net forum thread (thanks Frans) clarifies that this is an unanticipated glitch on FAT32 hard drives from software that was only tested on NTFS systems, and no SpyWare is involved (so your Justin and Kelly obsession will remain your secret).

what a horrible app. even a newbie windows programmer knows not to let the app get stuck in loops while it does shit, else the window cant refresh itself with the WM_PAINT, and therefor looks hung all the fucking time.

Valve is an expert at two things: good gameplay, and really shitty code.

Expecting anything more from Valve is unfair, right? I mean, Half-Life 1 didn't run when I bought it. I had to wait two weeks for a patch. So, I'm expecting the exact same problems with Steam and Half-Life 2.

Lets face the facts, shall we? Valve has never had, and never will have good coders.

I take back all my nastiness. They nuked all the user accounts, and I got my old email addy back. The install worked perfectly this time. I didn't have a problem at all. In fact if I didn't hate HL1 and CS so much I'd try them again just to try out letting Steam do it all.

you can't possible think 500,000 people will be purchasing through steam. why would you have to download the whole game when you have the CD?

It'll be less than 5,000 that buy through steam.

if Steam is Skynet then we don't have to worry about judgment day... it'll never happen. No terminators will be sent back through time as by the time the things are created the war will be over anyway, and just in case one does manage to make it - the terminator OS will be out of date as it couldn't connect to get the latest version, so will probably end up as a cleaner droid or something for the kids to play with.

mena yeah, i`m sure the reason its not spritely is cos milions of people are trying to do what we are - probably with the same amount of success

What do you think will happen when 500.000 users are trying to download the full game when it gets released sometime in the future?

Steam = Skynet

It will become self-aware and launch an attack againsts its enemys at 6:18pm today.

Who are its enemys? Gamers. Each house that has downloaded Steam has been targeted by a Nuclear Missle.

I've been trying to let the old client autoupdate for days. I'm 100 per cent sure I want a nice hard copy of the game on my shelf, saving 10 bucks, or even 20, not worth the risk.

Even if there had been a README or something that would say what it actually has to do to work, as opposed to obscure messages and LONG delays where nothing seems to be happening. I honestly wouldn`t have bothered with it, except , obviously, I want to play Half Life2, and wanted to get this out of the way (Steam is mandatory for HL2, right?)

It does seem like a pretty badly put-together application - always waiting for confirmation from some master server I think. That would at least explain all the lockups. I may give it a few days and try it then.

You`d have thought these simple problems would have been addressed in the BETA. I suppose we should be thankful that we can`t play Half Life 2 out of the box right now becuase Steam won't authenticate properly - this gives themsome time to sort out this mess.

The sad thing is I'm not surprised Steam is failing so bad...

Ever since the first attempt to do a Steam release this Jan I started to feel nervous.
Game developers are not enterprise software developers, I guess its that simple.

Steam, it being flakey with this much load I can comprehend, but the fact that steampowered.com is down is unforgivable, we have mastered for a long time how to serve up huge amounts of static content, yet steampowered is down. If Valve cannot complete this simple task, can we really expect the vastly more complex Steam to work?

NO

What makes me even more concerned is the possiblity that Valve will delay the release of Half-Life 2 to they can relase over Steam. Lets face it people, its Sept 12, Steam failed its first test in Jan, it has just failed its second test.. There is no way that Half-Life 2 is going to be distributed via Steam come Sept 30th.

Valve realize you're just gonna have to do a traditional release to good ol physical stores. Realize you're just a game developer and hire some consultants with experince with enterprise computing who will help you fix Steam.

You are a game developer.

Well I've waited for about an hour now and it's still installing the basic Steam package. I haven't been asked to add a new account or subscribe to the games.

How can Steam see this as being an efficient solution? I mean today everyone is wanting to download this and install it so I know why it's crawling and once it will be out a while it should be faster to download the basic client GUI.

But then when they release a patch then we all have to go through this process again as thousands of people try to get the updated patch. I think it would be faster if they did it the old way with multiple sites just offering the patch as a seperate file.

Ah well I'll give it a try but I do agree with MajorGeeks that I had problems too connecting so I hope that this "offical" version works for me.

the most common thought during use of this interface was "is it working"?

it seems to sit doing NOTHING for long periods of time - whenever you have an application doing something time consuming you WANT the user to know something is happening - status bars - counters whatever.

i REALLY dislike the interface - and i am starting to think i might begin hating it soon.
