Ships Ahoy: Savage

Savage: The Battle for Newerth Ships is the press release announcing that S2's teamplay game that combines the real-time strategy and first-person shooter genres has shipped to stores. Here's the deal on the game: "Set in a unique fantasy world eons from now, where Humans and Beasts violently battle for their very existence, Savage transports PC gamers to the next level in multiplayer gaming. The result of this meld is a truly unique experience that enables the player to opt for either the fast-paced, run-and-gun action of a FPS (playing as a Warrior) or the more cerebral and tactical planning of a RTS (playing as a Commander). Because Savage offers fully developed aspects of each genre, players must work together as a team in order to defeat their opposition."

The workers are ai controlled, while the players can perform the tasks of the workers its better to have the workers do the mundain tasks. You also for the most part have to research a lower tech item to get the higher tech stuff, all sorts of requirments to build something or research something. So you cant just go for 1 thing, have to atleast get the stuff along the way.

I find that often when I command I will totaly change a strategy based on what they are comming at me with, as having differnt techs can provide differnt types of towers that work better on differnt weapons, and such. I also base it off the people who are playing, some weapons are better for newer players while other weapons can be deadly if you are skilled in it. So knowing your troops can give you a nice early advantage.

Anyways, I cant wait to get the fresh blood in game and see how games develope. Should be quite fun..

I'm not sure what game Dignan was playing but I just watched the Gameplay Trailer and I thought the graphics looked great.

Slothy, when you guys make the demo please be sure to open it up enough so that clans get a good idea of how it plays and feels. It's hard to get 20-30 people on board with a game unless they feel comfortable with it. It'd be a good idea to get clans behind this game :).

Congrats on shipping your game :).

When Allegiance first came out it was great. Commanders would upgrade your weapons and such and there was some great dog fighting over sectors for mining. Then after a while the Commanders would simply save up for Capitol ships and the game got stale and boring. If they would have made it such that you had to have your fighters/bombers at a certain tech level before you could get better ships I would have played it a lot longer (as well as many others I talked to). Maybe being part of a clan made it better but the pub servers were nothing more than Cap ship rushes and that IMHO ruined the game in the end. The same thing is kind of happening in NS now to as Alien players simply horde their Resource points for Onos (on pubs anyways). I like the RTS/FPS games, it is finally something different from the UT/Quake Arena same ole same ole crap. I just hope savage has a system where the COMM has to give the 'peons' upgrades in order for them to build/get better things or it gets real sucky being a 'peon' and people will lose interest. I look forward to seeing a demo, I'll get my clan to try it out. Are you gonna work through Gamespy?

Is this game going to top the first place team game Allegiance, or edge out Natural Selection for second? It does sound fun.

In case you aren't aware of the best multiplayer team experience to date, check out www.alleg.net. It is abandonware and a rocking good time.

Linux camp, listen up. This one will be released for Linux as well. Every serious gamer has a budget to spend just for some plain old activism - I know I have. Let's show 'em that Linux users want to play new games, too.

Looking forward to checking out the demo.

Very sleek looking animations, nice atmosphere and really interesting classes to choose from. Not to mention the rts aspect to finally put some order into mp fps, assuming you don't have some 8 year ordering you to charge head on into an enemy position with no backup...

I was in the beta. I did not get a chance to play the release candidates, but this game is freaking great. I imagine this will be big. It was the most fun I have had with an online game since Tribes. If only this game had jetpacks...

Playing a leaked beta is for losers.

While I hate to detract from a good hate post, the game is 1st person when you're using a ranged weapon (aka gun), and 3rd person when you're using a melee or running.

We don't have bushes in the game right now, either, just lots of trees and grass.

For those who aren't familiar with Savage, you can check out the gameplay trailer at: http://www.s2games.com/gameplaytrailer/Savage_Gameplay_20030618.zip

Sounds pretty cool. Seems like Natural Selection, but we'll see. Hopefully it'll turn out well and get a good following.
