forum thread discussing the role of Steam in the future of Half-Life. Here
are the excerpts:
There will no longer be a WonID system, it will be replaced by the SteamID system.

great, now if I have 5 different games from 5 different manufactureres... They'll all be trying to talk back to thier "update servers" whenever I turn on my computer ... this assumes steam is a success and saves them money as always the others will follow. Imagine EA doing the same thing, blizzard, ID, ect..
You don't have to run steam on startup.
You only have to run steam to connect to a game server.
