Half-Life's Steamy Future

A post on Planet Half-Life (thanks Frans) reproduces some quotes from Valve's Erik Johnson posted to a Steam forum thread discussing the role of Steam in the future of Half-Life. Here are the excerpts:
There will no longer be a WonID system, it will be replaced by the SteamID system.

When we convert the userbase to Steam, a single WonID will be valid for all of the products.

If you're purchased a product from us at retail, you're going to have access to all of our products via Steam.

No, you do not have to pay for Steam.

That is correct, you'll have to have Steam installed to play the most current version of Half-Life.

live to drink the blood of the innocents from goblets made of human skulls. I love to hear the tattered lamentations of those I've crushed, to see a shattered bleeding hulk of a once powerful Warrior crawl limply to me on all fours to lick my armored boot and beg for a quick and merciful dispatchment. I thrill with the power granted by me via foul incantations so unholy that their mere utterance blackens the lungs. Tears of joy greet my bloodstained cheeks when I inhale the pungent aroma of flayed flesh smouldering upon the wooden shards of blasted farmhouses, while my ears are filled with the piteous cries of terrified peasants scattering before my arcing blade. In all honestly, my goal within any world is to become the most powerful warrior and to stand atop a pile of indiscriminate human remains taunting the Gods themselves with my hideous unearthly strength.

All fail to understand the ominous and all-encompassing blood-might that is RazorWynd. Freed from my crystal prison at last, I will harken the end of mankind by riding in upon a wave of human blood astride a boat made of dead men's bones. Then I will open the seventh seal of the apocalypse, raising the dead and rending the earth open, moments before before the seas boil and the sky cries acid tears upon the shatterend remnants of diseased and broken humanity. Those who survive will crawl into the caves and pray that the mountains will collapse upon them and end their torment.

Most of the problem is that when you close steam (in it's obvious beta form), it just reduce to your system tray instead of closing.

Right click on the tray icon and select "Exit Steam" to fully deactivate it.

So if I go play another non-steam game online, then it will use bandwith slowing down those other games. That's the kind of "sneaking up" that bothers me.

A valid concern, but steam uses "smart" bandwidth allocation. If you are using your bandwidth then it won't interfere, but if the computer is just idleing, it may download what you have told it to in the background.

Steam lets you play op4 for free, if you have a HL cd-key... I would have never played it otherwise. If your computer cant run Steam and HL, or CS, or whatever at the same time. Then you have bigger problems than worring about all the minor issues, like upgrading from that p3 400mzh computer you're running. If you don't have the internet, how are you reading and posting on Bluesnews anyhow. You people make some stupid ass comments sometimes, ya know? Sounds like mostly just alot of whining. No not whinging, thats a fucking stupid ass god damn word it makes me want to kill small furry animals when I read it. So excuese me I now have a baby squirrel to kill.

Idiot.

I could be accessing the internet from a few thousand place without having it at home. But that's completely beside the point since it's obvious that the SinglePlayer game will not need an internet connection to be "activated".

And it doesn't matter if I can (or cannot) run the game at the same time. Most of the problem is that when you close steam (in it's obvious beta form), it just reduce to your system tray instead of closing. So if I go play another non-steam game online, then it will use bandwith slowing down those other games. That's the kind of "sneaking up" that bothers me.

It's like windows automated update with winXP. I already have to bother with that shit with an OS (mind you, that's why I use win2000), I don't want my games to start doing the same thing. And even if Valve doesn't cross the line between "usefull" and "annoying", then complaining (in a constructive way) will make sure that no other game will end up doing it. Because it won't be fun the day 10 different dev. all have their own little "steam" system fighting for your bandwith and system ressources.

ps: What the hell is op4?

Why doesn't he just put a time limit on edit like some other forums do?

thanks Wazootyman... I still don't like the whole concept of Steam... especially since I can't install it and the last time I couldn't install or run something on my computer was because I didn't know the proper DOS command... and for the Old Geezer life, is too precious when you get that long in the tooth (as I am) so here's a quick synopsis...
Wazootyman is pro Steam but somewhat guarded about it... Dan is making bad Steam puns... and I, along with a million other people, apparently get it to run.

Thanks Wazoo.

And LG Orange, during those 7 minutes I was making dinner and helping my nephew with his homework...oh, and picking out spelling mistakes is usually indicative of someone who's desperate for a clever retort but just doesn't have it in him. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get some dishes done before we throw a movie in.
Toodles.
