Temple of Elemental Evil Gold

GameSpyDaily has a report up that Temple of Elemental Evil has gone gold, and that Troika's 3rd edition D&D game based on the Greyhawk module is off for duplication. Word is the game will be available on September 23, and to celebrate the occasion, they are planning a GameSpy Arcade chat with Troika's Tim Cain tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. EDT to discuss the game.

Can't count this one out. It's going to be the truest to pen and paper D&D of any CRPG and frankly those of us who remember playing Greyhawk back in the day are happy to see a classic module return. And from what I've seen of the screenshots and the game movies, the graphics are a step above what they did for Arcanum. More animated environments and more well done sprites. Since it's based off the Arcanum engines I only expected Troika to improve on it! And it's definitely going to blow Lionheart out of the water.

It's just medievil type Europe with fantasy crap like 90% of every other RPG made in the last 5 years.

It was a unique take on medieval fantasy. Yes it was medieval fantasy, there is no getting around that, but it certainly was not the Tolkien rip-off that 99.9% of medieval fantasy is. Maybe it comes from being a history buff but I thought the idea for the setting was both original and excellent.

The SPECIAL system is pointless in a real time game.

I wouldn't say it's pointless, just that it doesn't work as well when it isn't turnbased. Kinda like how DnD doesn't work very well on the PC because it was never designed for that purpose. While many would disagree with me I thought the Pseudo-RT of Fallout Tactics actually worked pretty well. It gave the game a sense of urgency and tension that wasn't there in turnbased mode. I think the majority of the folks who so vehemently dislike FO:T from a gameplay perspective are those that didn't take the time to get used to RT. Once I got used to RT my opinion of the game did a complete 180, well not quite but close.

They used it as a gimmick to get the slower of the Fallout fans excited about something people would otherwise ignore.

Don't let a FO Fanboy hear that or you'll quickly find yourself both castrated and crucified.

"unique-setting, SPECIAL system, freedom to tackle problems how you wanted not how the designers wanted"

It was not unique, and I've been saying that since the game was announced. It's just medievil type Europe with fantasy crap like 90% of every other RPG made in the last 5 years.
The SPECIAL system is pointless in a real time game. It was obvious they would force you to follow a fighter oriented class right from the beginning. They used it as a gimmick to get the slower of the Fallout fans excited about something people would otherwise ignore.

Id be willing to bet good money this will not flop. But since we cant do that, I'll just wait till it becomes a hit and then laugh at all the failed oracles.

If people opened their damn eyes they would have seen how crappy Lionheart was beforehand.

Whatever dude. It sounded awesome: unique-setting, SPECIAL system, freedom to tackle problems how you wanted not how the designers wanted. In the end the game came out to be average due to poor execution.

One could even say the above about Arcanum. It sounded like it would be the best CRPG ever, in reality it was heavily flawed game that had so many problems the excellent elements of the game were barely able to shine through.

It is for this reason that I regarding ToEE with guarded optimism. It could be amazing but I am ready for it to be another poorly executed CRPG.

I expect this one to flop.

The game is too close in spirit to Arcanum and Lionheart. IT also gives me that "Pool of Radiance" feeling - a sucky 3E game. Graphically it looks unimpressive (I'm basing this purely on screenshots) and I doubt it will entice 3.5E players to buy this.

The glory days of Fallout are well and gone. Move on.

ANOTHER game coming out in September?? I guess this proves it, NOBODY in the gaming industry wants to make any kind of money...

How are we gamers supposed to fit this into our already swamped schedules, Troika? You're going to come out in the week when we need to be playing Jedi Academy and / or Homeworld 2 in preparation of Half Life 2, Max Payne 2, Deus Ex : IW and / or Railroad Tycoon 3.

When are we supposed to have the time to play this epic of yours?

Seriously though, I do wish that the games industry would, just for once, spread the fucking wealth around a little. This Xmas we'll be fucking starved for anything decent to play, just as we've been starved for anything decent to play in the last three months (Tron 2.0 notably excepted).

But, ofcourse, a (seemingly) good RPG is always more than welcome, especially since it's TURNBASED!!!

See that, Bioware? You CAN make a perfectly acceptable turn based RPG solution. It doesn't HAVE to be this monstrous hybrid stuff you've been ramming down our throats for years.

" Lionheart had a lot going for too - but fell flat in execution."

If people opened their damn eyes they would have seen how crappy Lionheart was beforehand. TOEE actually looks (and sounds) pretty good. It's about time someone goes back to the more classic method of DnD. I might pick this one up.
