Homeworld 2 Demo Status

A post on Relicnews relays a tidbit posted in their forums at 4:00 p.m. EDT on the status of today's expected Homeworld 2 demo (thanks Frans). Here's the deal:
Vivendi Universal QC (in LA) have just started to look at the demo. It may take them as much as three hours to finish their testing (hopefully less). Assuming the game passes muster, it will be on servers about 60 to 90 minutes after that (don't you love bureaucracy).

_EX-Sierra_ <-Important distinction. I was laid-off in 2001 (along with about 400 other folks) when Vivendi finally admitted its accounting scandals. :-P Not that I'm bitter or anything. *chuckle*

Okay, former Sierra-employee chiming in again -

Software testing is an INCREMENTAL process - that means that as the product is developed, copies are sent to the QA teams at regular intervals. These are tested, and reports are returned to the developers.

Issues are tracked and tested to ensure that they're fixed in the next version - and then the issue is "closed out" (unless it pops up again). I'm certain that the QA team DID have hundreds of suggestions and bug-fixes; but these took place in the weeks and days leading up to the release.

Then, when its time for the "final" release - SUPPOSEDLY all bugs have been fixed; but the QA teams do 1 final pass through the software to ensure that no bugs have popped up in the "final packaging" of the software, that it installs correctly, etc.

This is why it only takes 3 hours (and in retrospect, only took 1). They don't WAIT to QA until the last second - QA'ing is done continuously as the product develops, between Alpha state and "Gold".

--Noel "HB" Wade

P.S. Yes, lots of programs are still buggy; sometimes due to rushed schedules, sometimes due to bad drivers... I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm just trying to educate folks on how the process works.

eh why did my post get killed? I couldn't mention it yet??

No, it was your affectionate nickname for GameSpot... that was one of the very few things that fell into the group of nonos I outlined recently, so it's time to stop letting that slide.

Stay away from personal attacks, homophobic and racial slurs, and illegal downloads and you should be fine.

Anyone else wonder why they waited until the last minute to test this thing? I mean, nevermind the fact that a few hours isn't long enough to test *anything*--why did they wait until NOW to do it? It doesn't make any sense.

Why is it hard to believe that the Vivendi crew couldn't test a small demo in a few hours?

You beat me to the punch Dr. Del. Seriously though, why QC it all if you're gonna do it for such a patethic little amount? Even a demo of that size would have a hundred little things going on in it and would take at least 2 or three days to do that properly. Ahh well, such is the life of shortcuts in the software world.
