Ships Ahoy: Lionheart

Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader Ships to Retail (thanks Frans) is the press release with word that this SPECIAL-system alternate-reality RPG from Reflexive and Black Isle is shipping to stores. Here's a bit:
In the game, players can control the entire party themselves or join forces with up to four gamers for mission-based cooperative multi-play. As they progress through the realm of Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader, players will be able to arm themselves with hundreds of melee weapons and 60 devastating spell attacks as they attempt to turn the tide against a savage onslaught of otherworldly creatures. Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader also features the SPECIAL RPG system for character advancement previously found in the Fallout® series of PC games.

I'm really interested to see if the retail version will be markedly better than the demo that was put out for the game.

It's markedly better, but still not very good. GameSpot review and score of 6.5 is pretty much on the mark. Might be a good RPG to pass the time till ToEE, though.

I've had lionheart for like a week now... it came out on the 13th... first 65% = best game ever, last 35% = worst game ever... dissapointing.

Aye, Frans is a little behind on this one

I played about 10 hours straight of it and had a damn fun time, until I realized at a point that my stealth archer was going to seriously get his ass kicked (there's a lot of situations where you can't help but fight) so now I'm planning to start over, probably with a full-on mage type (I play the dumb barbarian way too often). Very much enjoyed what I played tho.

Yeah, I figured I'd missed the "Ships Ahoy" announcement here.....ive had in since last Friday....this game hasnt really hooked me yet, I have no problem walking away from it. This game feels WAY too combat oriented...like a Diablo RPG bastard child....and the spells...read though the ice spells tree...they used every synonym for "icicle" known to man. Hmm, do i want to cast a "javilin" of ice of a "missile" of ice....or just a regualar "icicle"...

The stupid part is, that "Ricochet" demo included on the cd....yeah, i went thought the entire 2 hours of demo time before i even fired lionheart up

BUGGY POS ! I have a quick save game that whenver I load crashes to the desktop thanks to the 'companion' bug. The graphics look like they were grated with a grater although the static background art is nice.
Being stuck in 800x600 in 2003 just sin't acceptable

I too am victim to the companion bug.

**TIP TO ANYBODY WITH THIS GAME**
If you have companions, DO NOT go into the dungeon from the thieves guild in the sewers.

Certainly not the best CRPG ever made but Lionheart is good fun. I think I would have rated it a little higher than the gamespot review probably in the high sevens. The gamespot reviewer made numerous erroneus statements about the game (i.e. no way to see how much damage you are doing to an enemy) so I don't give too much merit to the review.

I haven't gotten that far yet but so far I've had a blast. It's no Fallout or Planescape:Torment but it'll tide me over until Fallout 3.

Who listens to gamespot reviews anyways? That's almost as bad as listening to IGN reviews.

I listen to gamespot reviews... I consider them to be one of the standards like Avault and gamespy. Id say I agree with their ratings about 90% of the time... It doesnt mean I like the website itself, or that I agree with their business philosophies

Edit "lionheart.cfg"

[Options]
Screen Width=800
Screen Height=600

There are some bugs if you play in f.ex 1024x768, but you can press "f2" to remove the 'drawn hud' (which is "locked" at 800x600) and you will be able to see a lot more of the game-area (1024 res..) Although some graphic bugs may appear during movement... not perfect, but it works

I've played all Infinty Engine games and hoped this would be as good. It is not. Read this for a summary of things that are just plain wrong with the game.

From the slashdot article:

The questing and dialogue is very good for CRPG standards, but so far -- I've only played for a day -- ... no PS:T

The game definately isn't a Planescape: Torment but is still very fun. I'd recommend it to any CRPG fan, but it isn't quite good enough to recommend to any gamer.

There are so many things wrong with that statement...

Does "Reflexive" ring a bell? Yeah...after playing this game some more today, I do like it....it isnt Fallout, but it is good.

Black Isle = Bioware wannabies

HAHA, You made me laugh! Oh shit, you were serious.

1. Lionheart was made by Reflexive Entertainment, Black Isle/IPLY is the publisher.

2. Black Isle has made Fallout 1/2 and Plancescape: Torment. Bioware only wishes they could do something that good.

3. Baldur's Gate 1, think back and tell me how much roleplaying there was. There wasn't much. Mostly just non-linear hack and slash. Statements that BG was anything more is looking at the game through rose-colored glasses.

4. Baldur's Gate 2, while improving the gameplay Bioware also made 2/3 of the game entirely linear. Why must the early plot revolve around me saving Imoen? I never liked the bitch anyway.

5. Throne of Bhaal, completely linear hack and slash. Maybe 5 subquests in the entire game. Dialogue trees where you have 5 possible responses but each one gets the same answer from the NPC.

6. NWN, Worst. Single-player. CRPG. Ever. Well maybe not, but the OC was incredibly bland and even made BG look like a masterpiece in comparison.

7. Shadows of Undrentide, improved on the NWN OC in some areas but was a complete rush job with the latter half of the campaign being even worse than the OC.

8. KotoR, from what I've heard it's quite good. Maybe Bioware is starting to live up to it's rep.

Played some more hours: Nice setting, fun (historic) characters, nice dialogues, interesting RPG system (I really prefer AD&D though), terrible, terrible interface, very chaotic combat, mostly boring items.

Upcoming Patch Aug 20, 2003, 19:44
Aug 20, 2003, 19:44

BTW, just saw a thread on the Lionheart forums indicating that a patch is going through "quality assurance" right now:
Here is a list of the patch fixes:

1) Optimizations to the size and frequency of network packets. This will help low bandwidth connections such as 56k modems.

2) Increased the timeout time for non-guaranteed data so more of it gets a chance to make it to the client on a slow modem.

3) Faster 3D rendering. This generally speeds up the game when there are numerous characters on screen. This doesn't mean that characters have been sped up, it means that machines that saw dips in framerate during scenes with many characters should see an improvement with the patch.

4) Fixed rendering error that occurred in some loaded saved games with dragons.

5) A Speed Slider has been added that allows the user to select the speed that the game plays out between ranges of 70% to 100%. It is accessed by hitting the escape button. There is a slider in the middle of the small menu that allows speeds to be switched.
