Out of the Blue

It's been with great interest that I've been gauging the reaction to the takeover ads that are appearing here. I guess this will be a talking point here for a few days, so I won't try to cover the whole thing in one mouthful (though this update is so long it looks like I did). First, just to be clear, there is another new intrusive ad unit that will appear as of today -- this will represent the completion of this process, so while its appearance is probably no more welcome, that will be the end of this (I don't want anyone to think that a new ad unit is going to be added every day).

As was discussed in the forums yesterday, the deal with the takeover ad is that the most any one user should be able to encounter it is once per 24 hour period. This works via a cookie, and as far as I've been able to tell, this has worked as promised. I've had one report from someone with a technical difficulty, please let me know if you are having one yourself (if you do, please include as much pertinent system info as you can). The deal with these other ads, which will be of the pop-up variety, is that no one should receive more than a single one per visit, and none of them will do any of that annoying open a new window when you try to close it dealie.

As I alluded to yesterday, these are not moves that have been made lightly, they are meant to ensure the survival of this site, which if I may be brutally frank has been losing money for over two years now (since the dot-bomb). I resisted pop-up type ads as being greedy when they were worth a king's ransom back when the site was in the black. I resisted them during the dark days of the past couple of years as not worth bothering everyone with if they still weren't allowing the bills to be paid. Now that a middle ground is achievable here, it seemed like it was the way to go. I fought hard to lay down parameters that will keep the frequency of these reasonable, and made everyone involved crazy by standing my ground to not allow for the possibility that these frequencies could increase for the foreseeable future. I can only hope that the end effect is indeed reasonable for most of you, and that, as I said yesterday, you find these trade-offs acceptable.

Finally, at the risk of the longest OotB EVAR (and I didn't even get to the new e-mail worm), I have seen the hue and cry for a system that allows users to pay for a site with no such ads... I will do a little investigating and report to you what the near-term possibilities are in this regard. There's also been more stirring from supporters of the idea of a PayPal donation link. Breaking my (eerie to some) silence on this topic, I guess the time to consider that will be after the dust settles from all this (it wouldn't seem fair to do that first and then hit you with the new ads).

208. How do you get paid? Aug 27, 2003, 01:26 Prez
Hey Blue - Do you get money just by allowing the ads on your site or do we have to click on 'em? You might want to put this info in an ootb, cause my mouse is about to break from clicking the ads. Long live Blues News!

with my opinion of the ads. . .whatever it takes to keep this site is OK with me, short of Blue returning to streetwalking. The new Google toolbar does very well in suppressing the pop-ups. As I've wondered outloud when this site has hit hard times before (and pardon the repeat as I've not yet waded through the 200+ comments here): any ideas for expanding the site, brining in more traffic? We've all watched Shacknews grow (don't know if its flourished); what new directions could Bluesnews go in to keep afloat?

You know people have become spoiled when they bitch about having to move their mouse over an inch or two and click it.

i dont know, but why in this day and age people dont have pop-up stoppers is well beyond me. They are free easy to use and no bother at all . Even the beta google toolbar has one built in. And all these people complaining about 1 page add that has a large white link to the main page makes me laff. I have already clicked the link to the main page b4 the ad had 1/2 loaded ..i mean is it that hard to do? Form reading some of the comments here the people that are complaining and leave Blues will be well shut of, bye and dont let the door hit you on the way out. If you cant put up with a ad or deal with a pop-up what the hell are you doing surfing the net anyway, or is it just because the ad and pop up arent porn that you are upset?

"bottom line! after many many years as my start up page"
And only three posts?

"its time for change."

A few pop-ups but nothing unacceptable from my POV. 2 P-Us and that EA Madden thingee today. I can live with it. Stick with it if it brings in some cash. It's still free for me :). I don't see anybody yankin' their cable out of the wall because I guess it's acceptable to watch 12 minutes of commercials an hour! But noooo... don't ever think about asking me to close a pop-up window much less click on it to register a hit! (if that's how these things work)

200. What about the T-Shirts? Aug 22, 2003, 15:01 Heretic_QPF
Hey! Post # 200!!!!

Doesn't Blue make enough money from the T-Shirts?

What about Blue re-selling some of his web space to Gamer's Clan pages?

Firstly, my concerns for non-americans starving is about as deep as whether or not to scratch my ass when it itches. If you're a foreigner, and offended by this, tough. When you legally immigrate to this country come talk to me again.

Secondly, for those americans that are going hungry, are unemployed, etc. too bad. There are jobs out there, sure you're not going to make the same $75k you were raking in before your idiot idea of a dot bomb crashed, but there are plenty of janitorial and fast food opportunities awaiting your skills. I'm not here to support you, God helps those that help themselves.

And don't get into a relgion thing, I'm not of any particular denomination but that saying gets the point across quite well I think.

197. multiple paypal accounts Aug 22, 2003, 08:06 DooM
To the guy that said that if Blue had a paypal button up, he would create lots of paypal accounts so Blue could earn from referrals.

Well, i dont think thats possible. You need a credit card number for each account you create.

As for the ongoing ads discussion, put up a PAYPAL button already, and dont forget an AMAZON WISHLIST.

You consider people greedy because they have a job? What the hell does Africa have to do with Bluesnews? There's people starving in America, Russia, all over Europe, hell, probably in Antarctica for all I know, and I'd still donate money to this site if there was a donation button.

Please STFU, mostly because you're and idiot, but I'm sure you'll provide plenty more reason if you read this post.

Great Post! Wouldn't you think that this site would be PayPalled by Carmack, Sweeney and the fine folx at Monolith. Blue has involuntarily P1mped those fellas for quite sometime. I would like to see them offer him a stipend of somesort to keep this site up! Please!!?

I have been visiting this webpage since its original conception as Blue's Quake Rag and I continue to visit it day in and day out. I've never really commented here on anything before, but this topic warranted a voicing. I for one would be willing to donate via PayPal to continue to have access to this truly great page. I donate about $16 a month total to a few other types of sites I visit and I would gladly chip in a few more dollars to help keep this site up. I know there are a great many others who share my view on this and I am quite sure that path would allow this page to remain open for many years to come.
