PlanetSide: Core Combat Press Release

Though the game has already been unveiled, PlanetSide Goes Underground This October With PlanetSide Core Combat, Its First Expansion is the press release officially announcing the add-on for SOE's MMOFPS (thanks Frans). Here's the product in a nutshell: "PlanetSide: Core Combat adds a new style of gameplay to PlanetSide with head-to-head urban warfare, testing players' skills as they react quickly to enemy troops in high-adrenaline fire-fights in subterranean alien complexes. With six new underground war zones, additional weapons, vehicles, and enhanced empire bonuses, Core Combat creates a new dimension for players to master in PlanetSide's all-hours-of-the-day online conflict."

I thought the basis of this type of game was that you pay a monthly fee and this content was what you were paying for?? I guess they're limiting how much they release each month and instead allow this content only to people who pay even more...

Recall: This is sony that we're talking here.

Everquest: Need I say more?

I can only imagine what they're going to do with SWG.

That's why I'm done with SOE entirely. The one thing I can give MS is that at least they actually provide real new content and live quests with their games (AC, AC2).

That's why Mythica is going to own. I'm curious to see which way Blizzard is going to go with WoW.

If there ever was a chance of subscribing to this game, charging for the expansion just killed it for good. Amazing that they have the balls to do this.

I am just curious. I can't recall any game, not just a massive online game, that has announced an expansion so soon after release. Well, except for Star Wars Galaxies. They announced a year before it was released that space ships would be in an add-on. Could this be a coincidence?

PlanetSide: Core Combat requires a copy of PlanetSide to play. The new expansion will be downloadable via the PlanetSide launch pad. Additionally, retailers will be offering a boxed version. For more information on PlanetSide: Core Combat, please visit: http://www.planetside.com.

.. so the launch pad version will be free, right?

Nope. Just like that EQ expansion Ykesha or whatever with the Frogloks. You can download it no problem, but to activate it you gotta shell out the zuchinnis.

It's funny that debates on this game and the pay to play model before this games release were defended in great length by the people that claimed they were gonna get all kinds of free content as one of the quirks of their subscriptions. Looks like sony has those people bent over and grabbing their ankles.

Yeah, it was a rhetorical question. Seems SOE has their business model down pat.

1. Promise XXX
2. Deliver X
3. Wait
4. Release XXX, and charge for it

Profit!

I cancled mine a long time ago. I had fun for a month or two, but damned if the next night we had to do it all over again. I just wished some of those bases would friggen stay taken for a day or two. I mean, you put 4-5 hours into a thing...

Man, I cancelled not just three days ago after getting SWG. If I did not, this would have done it.

This game WAS really fun. However, I knew it only had a month or two lifespan of interest. Why the hell would I pay a monthly fee to only be greeted a couple of months later with an expansion pack?!?!

Remember people, MMOGs are services...and games like DAoC and SWG fulfill that requirement. Planetfall is a online shooter, not service. There is not any socializing, trading, trade-skills, skills, etc. Only fights. There should not be any expansions, only sequals.

At least the SWG expansion is going to give us a whole new dimension: Space. Vehicles better be a free patch.
