More DOOM 3

With QuakeCon getting underway, there are some QuakeCon Doom 3 Multiplayer Impressions on HomeLAN Fed describing the multiplayer action on tap at the show. Since some of the first comments on the story below concern physics, here is what this update has to say on the subject: "Rag doll physics was in evidence during the Doom III multiplayer demo, including objects like boxes and barrels that could be moved by weapons fire and a dead body hanging from the ceiling during one portion of the level that could also be moved by weapons fire. Some glass windows could also be smash but unlike most glass in games the window didn’t shatter all at once but rather in pieces."

Even in the HL vid from the other day no gibs

In the Traptown video when Gordan shoots an exploding barrel one of the zombies gibs.

Rag doll. That's all well and good, but I'm sick of shooters not gibbing when the enemy should be gibbed (Brute Force/Halo). Yea yea, they're console, but still. Even in the HL vid from the other day no gibs.
It's not that the developers can't do such a thing. It's that they usually won't. Ghoul2 has been available for quite some time, but you don't see developers jumping to use it because it's a little too realistic in violence.

#18: I understand. Don't get me wrong, I don't see a pistol or shotgun or machine gun gibbing anyone - or even a plasma rifle - but I do expect body parts (and flying bodies) from grenades and rock launchers.

well, given that D3 will only excel in 1 of those four I'd like to see gibs to offset the other three.

nice try at sarcasm when it's not warrented (and doesn't fit as a reply to the meaning of my post) dork

Don't forget that gibs are extremely unrealistic and most game nowaday tries to be more realistic (graphic/physic-wise) even in a sci-fi setting.

Rag doll. That's all well and good, but I'm sick of shooters not gibbing when the enemy should be gibbed (Brute Force/Halo). Yea yea, they're console, but still. Even in the HL vid from the other day no gibs. I (do) want to see bodies flying around from grenades - that's cool - but I also want to see a baddie get gibbed when they're supposed to. Too much gibbing (ala Q3) is not good as it takes away the satisfaction of gibbing), but not enought isn't as fun as an immensly satifying Q1 gib. rag doll is cool, just combine it with a decent gib model.

edit1: doesn't have to be a complete (spray) gib, I'd settle for someone getting blown in half - or in several pieces (if we're looking for realism).

Whatever dude. Single Player is increasingly sounding like a System Shock inspired experience. Given that System Shock 2 is my favorite FPS, well tied with Thief I guess, of all time I kinda like the sound of that. If singleplayer delivers on that level it doesn't really matter what sort of multiplayer is included but even then this sounds like multiplayer will be able to carry over the atmosphere of singleplayer, something many games are unable to do.

Agreed. ID can delay the game all they want, unless it has a riveting plot - Like HL1, It's going to be another generic FPS.. Bleeding edge graphics are keen - but Valve proved to us that Plot is king.. graphics merely enhance this...

"Games"? They've only released one game since Quake 2.

words are neat, but we really need video. After quake 2, id games have been little more than showcases for their new graphics engines for licensing. Kind of like UT2003...

more tiny, indoor corridors. WOW! and with the new lighting, now they are dark!

regurgitated DM - nothing new here and the single player sounding weak - they should delay this until they can come up with a game.

zing.

<assumption based on very, very little fact> They're delaying it because they found out that even if they optimize their engine as much as they can, there's no computer that can run it with high details. </assumption>

ya, that's somewhat disturbing.... couldn't they muster up a good enough machine to at least run it at 1024x768?

Unless they were on a 15" monitor or something, it really should've been at like 1280x1024 with AA...

Whats splash damage doing again? Giving us a serious multiplayer to Doom 3 instead of this four player nonsense?

I think 4 player DM sounds awsome. If you remeber the first DOOM, deathmatch was only for players, but it had the same "dark places" feature, so it was more of a man hunt. And a man hunt is what I want.

I can't wait for a simple CS type mod for this. 1 on 1 DM with real guns in dark corridors... with realistic windows and physics, it should be awsome.

I wonder if you will be able to use your weapons fire to push a rag-doll opponent through a partially shattered pane of glass and the resulting blood splats on the glass casting shadows.

DM sounds OK. Limiting to 4 players will make it more of a man-hunt kind of game. I would hope that there will be team games (CTF, TF) implemented as well.

WOW! moving boxes, ragdoll physic and, yes you heard it "windows that shatters in pieces".

And we will get all this NEW technology in 2004! Awsome.

I'll be impressed when their realistic lighning react to every single piece of shattered galss.
