New EA Studio

EA Creates New Development Studio in Montreal (thanks Frans) has word that Electronic Arts is searching for the site for a new studio they will open in the great white north. Here's a bit: "'I'm excited about building a team that will create the next great game franchise for EA,' said General Manager Alain Tascan. 'We are now composing a team from people who submit resumes submitted to a special Montreal site on jobs.ea.com. The staff will grow quickly as we identify projects and begin development.'"

You know absolutely nothing and your "education" was a waste, and it's more than evident in every single post that you write. Your facts are biased, your perception askew, and your outlook flawed.

In short, you're an idiot.

Have a nice day

Why Montreal? Why Toronto? Why not Reykjavik? Sure, it may not be in Canada but it's got a cool name and it's really cold

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22
Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?

I wonder what it's going to be called. I'm betting it will have the numbers 2004-9 at the end of it, it will be absofuckinglutely bug infested on the PC, and EA will refuse to patch it.

That about sums it up I'd say?

I understand much english speaking people wouldn't want to move to Quebec because they don't want to learn the language, but that's just too bad for them.

Um, no. That's too bad for Quebec because they lose out on a huge amount of talent and business that would otherwise end up there.

we actually PAY for other provinces and we don't receive additional funds from the federal government

Wrong again. Quebec recieves the overwhelming amount of government work and contracts in Canada and they cost Canadians the most of any province because of it.

Our federalism is FAR from being perfect, but it's still leagues better than the political system in the USA IMO

Is it? Now you have Newfoundland, Alberta and BC are talking about seceeding-again because they're sick of Quebec and the handouts they get to the exclusion of the rest of the country as well as as always using seperation as leverage to blackmail the rest of the country. For all the problems the US has I don't hear ANY of the states making earnest noices about seceeding because one particular state pissing everyone else off-although I'm sure a lot of people would like to see California gone.

Can you prove it?

Um, it's common business knowledge.

Seriously, do you think more people == more "skilled" workforce?

Um, as applies to industrialized nations, that's generally the case.

Seriously, we aren't much different if you put language aside. I think you're just being a troll and that if you actually went to Montreal and try to meet people, especially english speaking people, you wouldn't see much difference

I have spent a great deal of time in both Montreal and Quebec City, and there are definite cultural differences between those places and Toronto. So shut up with the troll nonsense because you clearly don't know a great deal about either business or politics. Now it would seem obvious why the rest of Canada hates Quebec.

Here are a few government links for your edification, try learning something.

"No, but it's contending with those language laws is what keeps a great many people from wanting to move to Quebec in the first place. Quebec always has a hard time attracting good talent because of it. That's why most of the work in the province is government related (hydro projects, bureaucratic services, etc.). Quebec would have gone under by now if they weren't being held up by the Canadian government - something that's a sore spot with many Canadians, particularly in the west. "

ROFL... Ok where do I start? I don't think we need to ATTRACT new talents because we have a very high artists/population ratio. I understand much english speaking people wouldn't want to move to Quebec because they don't want to learn the language, but that's just too bad for them. You can live in english in montreal very easily. Hell sometimes I go to some downtown stores and they can't even speak french. You'd be surprised if you actually visited the city. However, if you go outside Montreal, you'll have some trouble getting decent English service.

As for your BS arguments about "Quebec would go under if it wasn't for government services", well, we actually PAY for other provinces and we don't receive additional funds from the federal government (perequation). I know folks in Alberta and Ontario pay even more than us, but that's the way our federalism work. I think you have mistaken Quebec with New Foundland!!! Now these people would be worth to get their asses kicked out of the country by your mind set.

LOL that's a sore spot with western people? Then just leave Canada and join the United States. Let's see how much fucked you'll get. Our federalism is FAR from being perfect, but it's still leagues better than the political system in the USA IMO.

"Most corporate moves are predicated on tax deals struck with various municipalities first and foremost. That aside, I can assure you Montreal certainly does not have the same skilled worker pool to draw on that Toronto does."

Can you prove it? Seriously, do you think more people == more "skilled" workforce? I don't think so. Montreal is a more artistic city than Toronto, and that's by pretty far. I agree corporate companies/headquarters would rather go to Toronto, but Montreal IMO is a better choice for a gaming studio or any artistic company. Wages, rent, taxes (you'd be surprised how much we have tax exemptions for high-tech companies), workforce, I think they made a wise choice.

Seriously, we aren't much different if you put language aside. I think you're just being a troll and that if you actually went to Montreal and try to meet people, especially english speaking people, you wouldn't see much difference... unless you're from Alberta and supporting the Iraqi war blindly because you're american bitches. We are traditionnally more leftists and "liberals", but that's a very good thing IMO.

And I'd never wat to live in toronto, a.k.a. "the city that close at 11:00 pm".

11pm? When was that 1920? Last call in Ontario is 2AM and you can get anything else you want 24 hrs per day.

And Québec French's law won't stop you from making software.

No, but it's contending with those language laws is what keeps a great many people from wanting to move to Quebec in the first place. Face it, if they want another studio in Montreal, then they probably know better then you where the "skilled workforce is".

Most corporate moves are predicated on tax deals struck with various municipalities first and foremost. That aside, I can assure you Montreal certainly does not have the same skilled worker pool to draw on that Toronto does.

I really don't care what EA does, it's just an odd move.

Yeah, the rent is way cheaper in Montreal then Toronto. Where in Toronto you would have to fork out 900 bucks a month, my Uncle owns a small apartment building and charges 350 a month.

I pay 829 for a single bedroom in toronto

and as for SARS being a factor, that'd be really stupid and i hope it's not true and it probably isn't... we've been over SARS for a while now.

why toronto? why not montreal?

Several reasons.

#1. Corporate tax is lower in Ontario
#2. Toronto has a larger population and skilled workforce
#3. You don't have to contend with all those stupid french language laws in Toronto - something that doesn't really inspire anyone to move to Montreal, so your talent isn't as good as you would find in a city that doesn't have to contend with that crap

Montreal is a great town to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there, and neither will most of the people they'll need to work out there.
