Yup I figured this out. I found that the problem is that for some reason Valve forced "DIB Section Blitting", as soon as I resaved the videos with "Choose Blitting Automatically" things worked fine. On Radeon cards I had no problem with they way they came from Valve, but on the two Geforce cards I had access to they sucked with out the Blitting change.

It's not just you, other people have had the same problem. Download Bink Player from www.radgametools.com and then use it's Advanced Play to play your movies. It allows you to pre-cache and change the renderer stuff. If you check pre-cache and select "DirectDraw to primary surface" things will be very smooth. My 900 plays them fine then.

Bad frame rate to videos? Aug 14, 2003, 20:17

The last few videos (ie: Tunnels, havn't seen Bugbait and this one) from HL2 have looked like it was recorded while the game ran at approx. 10-20fps. Is it just it my copies or what?
I would think that Valve would record these demos on the beefiest system they have around so it runs at a reasonable framerate to show off.

Edit: nevermind wierd issue with my girlfriends system

I dont mean to pick at it under a microscope but..

Then please refrain. Valve has already mentioned that this content and build are nearly a year old.

While that scene is nice, the one thing that needs tweaking is the popup grass

cos we all know grass=gameplay

im sure there are places where lights do have the UT2003/doom 3 lighting effects - but shadows caused by static objects (like walls) dont seem to cast shadows on models.

Although special lights seem to cast shadows/direct light. This is apparent in the klieners lab video - with the light from the monitor projected onto his chest.

This seems completely seperate from world lighting though. Which as a pro makes the game faster.. as a con isnt doom 3.

One other thing i don't like (not only in hl2, but every game ever made) is how when their shadow is half in the shade and half in the sun it still casts a shadow in the shade.

This is probably hard to prevent but it still annoys me. Not annoys me to the point of "this game is unplayable", annoys me more like "it would be nice to see someone try to fix that"

Hey, you just found the main difference between Doom3 and Source.
I still guess the Source engine is "just" a highly upgraded version of the q3 engine, and that architecture does have limits.

anyone else notice that the lighting on the models seems to be based on the lighting directly under it. (like in half-life 1).

so when tehy're walking through that destroyed building with the windows and the sun, they keep popping up fully aluminated instead of illuminated where the sun would hit them..

dissapointing but sho cares i suppose.

I am just waiting for Valve to release the part with the dune baggy being chased by that flying alien chopper thingy. That was the most amaizing scene of what I have seen of Half Life 2 so far, IMO.

While that scene is nice, the one thing that needs tweaking is the popup grass. Watch the E3 video and notice how as the jeep is driving around grass pops up not too far ahead. Their LOD system needs to be more subtle than what that video showed.

P.S. I've been out of town for the past few days, do we know if HL2 has been delayed or not? or is it still up in the air?

yeah i'm also looking forward to that one. I fell in love with the new rocket launcher in a heartbeat and I remembered back in HL 1 how evolutionary that RPG was over the standard quake RL. It got tons of oooh's and aahhh's around the office when it flew out and ignited a half second later. As for ragdoll physics, I really hope they tweak the **** out of it. The idea that as soon as someone is dealt a fatal blow to their leg, they instantly fell nerve deadness limp is just stupid. They need to have ragdoll physic influence the death animations; not just have ragdoll do all the work which looks like a ragdoll and not a person.

Kudos to BitTorrent

Is it just me, or do the friendly NPCs look jittery when they move?

Other than that, I thought this was a fine example of HL2's ability to realistically simulate large city scenes and combat

Only pointed at people That think they know it all.....Alll others are kewl on this forum.

Anyhoo...I thought IMO this clip shows alot of weakness in source engine...I dont mean to pick at it under a microscope but Charater movement .....Damage location...And rag doll physics looked akward in this flick

IM NOT TRYING TO FIND FLAWS IN THE ALMIGHT HL2
But this clip(in high rez) was the least impressive of the bunch

But yes I did like the music!!

What stood out the most in this clip was the music. It's very ambient & low-key, but ominous at the same time. I almost always turn the music off in an FPS, but I may actually leave it on if the rest of the tracks fit well.

Also just want to say how great BitTorrent is...for me anyway. Big thanks to FileRush & I'm glad to see 3DGamers adopting its use, too.

And with all this testing, it still suck!
Dude, calm down.

You know what I hate about that thing, even if I tell it "not to automatically update this game". I need to relaunch the application before it takes effect. And when I want to see if the list of video as been updated, it change my option as soon as I look trough the video menu. Wich means that it start downloading all of them since I didn't even have the time to tell it wich one I wanted.

And that sucks.

They'd better allow me full control over the application before HL2 comes out or I'll need to block it so my bandwith is not monitored by a game.

It's like automatic windows update. But atleast with those, I can choose not to apply patch and only do so when I want.
Think about it. If the games come out and when there's a new patch, everyone is stuck having to download it before they can play online again. yay! for limited bandwith for 100 000 user waiting for 5 hour unable to have control over the game they payed for!

I don't want my computer to anything unless I tell it to do so, and this is exactly the kind of crap I hate.

holy crap... uhhh.. what? i guess my faculty of reasoning is too remedial to comprehend why you'd cry like that.
