PT Boats Unveiled

The Akella Website announces development of a new World War II naval simulator called PT Boats: Knights of the Sea (thanks Gamer's Hell). Here's a bit:
PT Boats: Knights of the Sea is powered by an improved version of the STORM 2 used in the award wining Pirates of the Caribbean. The STORM 2.5 engine enables the creation of unique special effects like ocean waves from explosions, tracing the tracks of various types of boats, illustrating the boats gliding, realistic collision damage, damage from assorted types of ammunition and so much more! Our close cooperation with 1С/Maddox Games, the leading flight simulator developers and renowned for IL-2 Sturmovik, allowed us to create historically accurate and detailed aircraft models.

PT Boats are patrol torpedo boats. Very fast and very light wooden boats armed to the teeth with deck guns, torpedoes, depth charges, machine guns, smoke generators, rockets, and (believe it or not) more.

PT boats to other ships are basically what fighter planes are to bombers.

My grandafther commanded a PT boat in WWII and he says a formation of PT boats with competent crews was an almost unbeatable weapon. They would come in at an extremely high speed, maneuvring wildly and easily avoiding defensive fire from higher caliber weapons. They'd hurl torpedoes at the enemy from out of effective small arms range and retreat. He says late in the war they'd see people jumping overboard and lowering life boats as soon as his PT boats were in sight.

This should definitely be more fun that commanding a destroyer or a submarine.

Not Pontoon, Paddle boats. It's a game completly about paddle boats, and it's about time too. The use of pedal powered boats during the war is one of the less known stories of the war. These brave men did marvelous things in the waters off the Solomons, the Marshall Islands and in many lakes and amusment parks all around the world.

so is this about pontoon boats?

Watching PT 109 gives the impression they are helpless, while watching McHale's Navy makes them seem like pleasure craft, but they were pretty formidable little boats that gave at least as well as they received during WW2.

All in all, a great subject for a game.

Yup, believe it or not, it's just a coincidence

I only check 3 sites daily: this one, 3DGamers and Gamer's Hell. Since you get all the news straight from Frans, the only site where I can find other news is GH...and that doesn't happen much, since most of the time everything from GH is posted here quickly

I appreciate what Frans is doin with 3DGamers and what he did in the past for Blue's, but maybe you should give the credits to the people who actually found this

Frans actually told me about this before seeing it on G.H., though their story did actually beat him to the punch, so no reason not to give them their due here.

Or should I say your due? More than half your posts have been to pimp Gamer's Hell... coincidence?

I like the idea of PT boats. I seem to remember a couple of games during the late 80's that dealt with that theme. During that time, they had very simplistic physics.

I can't remember the name of the Accolade game that dealt with the Vietnam Patrol Boats. The big design decision was to include human characters to shoot. This was before Doom.

Frans seems to be everywhere lately. This is weird because there's no mention of this game anywhere on 3DGamers BUT i've seen this news on Gamer's Hell a few hours ago:
