English XIII Demo

The English-language single player demo for XIII is now available, offering a sample of Ubi Soft's upcoming cel-shaded Unreal-engine shooter, a bit earlier than the "middle of August" that was recently predicted (story). The demo offers two levels for an 80 MB download, which is available from 3D Gamers, FileFront, FileShack (registration required), GameCenter, Gamer's Hell, and Loadedinc (registration required). Update: Some of these links were to a passworded version of the demo, so some of these mirrors are unavailable while this is being sorted out.

I had a problem with the boxes blinding me too. So I turned the res to max and I'm all cool now. Only thing I didn't like was dropping down with the hook.

Also can you snipe helmet guys by shooting them in the neck? I think I've done it once but didn't notice.

I really enjoyed this one. Wins kudos for general style, a cool story (so far), Adam West, cell-shading and running smooth as butter on my older machine. Loses a few points here and there for the crappy first level music and the inability to save my mouse sensitivity when the level is reloaded. I'm also not a fan of *some* of the boxes that pop up to point out enemies and important items...they block my view and are generally distracting at times. Overall, though, a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to the final product.

Even though your instructions were for "XII", the little-known prequel to "XIII" they worked all the same. Thanks for the help.

After saving the .ini and trying the game again, all was right with the world.

Actually, this is not true.

After saving the .ini and trying the game again, all was right with the world... until I played the second mission and remembered why I hate games that don't give you the option to save when you want. I really hope the PC and Xbox versions have a checkpoint or "anytime" save system.

My default monitor setup is 32bit/1024x768 @ 85Hz . When trying to run "XII" I was greeted with a "Sync. out of range" error.

Here's how I got the demo to run.

You'll find the XIII.ini file in the System folder within your XIII folder. Open the .ini (might wanna back it up, just to be safe). Scroll through the .ini until you find:

[WinDrv.WindowsClient]
WindowedViewportX=640
WindowedViewportY=480
FullscreenViewportX=640
FullscreenViewportY=480

I changed the default "FullscreenViewportX = 640" to 1024 and "FullscreenViewportY" from 480 to 768 to match my system settings -- obviously, systems vary so set your rez accordingly.

After saving the .ini and trying the game again, all was right with the world.

Hope this helps.

As the subject might imply, I can't seem to find the command line that controls the refresh rate. I'd imagine it's somewhere in the System folder near the resolution controls, yet they're being elusive to my eyes. Any help would be appreciated as I would really like to play this demo.

After I got my graphics problems squared away (I had the "sync." problem others have had), I really liked what I had seen.

The graphics are dern cool and the music is spot-on (for the visuals -- and I'll assume for the story). The game-play is pretty cool too, from what I've seen.

I'll rent the Xbox version; that's for sure.

Changing the resolution in the .ini file did the trick, thanks to everyone who helped me out.

*EDIT*
Cygnus, try changing just the resolution in the .ini file. It worked for me.

Another tip about changing the resolution is that you have to quit the game, which doesn't mean exiting the whole program, just the current level. Then you can access video options which are normally not available from the options while playing.

Wow you people are quick. To change the resolution use the arrow keys and Hit ENTER.

To remap controls READ the bottom of the screen "Accept - ENTER."

As far as in-game saves go, the lack thereof seems to be characteristic of the demo alone, judging by the existence of a save game folder; though the action seems fast enough to me that I'll be too busy to think about mid-level saves.

As for changing settings: folks, I can't emphasize this enough, never, ever forget to hit the Enter key after making any changes for them to save. Many seem to be forgetting to do this on other forums, so I'm curious as to whether the same is true here.

I actually haven't had anything much as far as problems go. My optical mouse works like a charm... gameplay is smooth as silk... Aside from some crackling during spoken parts (which I believe was mentioned elsewhere on these forums) using an SBLIve! 5.1 card, everything has been perfectly enjoyable for me. Sorry to those who have been experiencing difficulties; honestly, I don't know what to tell you. I'm using the latest Detonators, latest MS Optical mouse drivers, latest Soundblaster drivers, latest VIA Hyperion drivers.... If you're using the latest everything as well, then I'm at a complete loss. My sympathies: this really is quite a fun product.

I DL'ed the demo, and enjoyed it (considering I couldn't remap keys to suit my lefty playing style or change the res or anything), it's nice to be able to jump into an FPS without the friggin "Now walk over here, now jump over this pipe, now duck under this pipe" crap, and I hope they don't have to put that into the full version. The Cel Chading was really sweet too, at low res at least, and the weapons were all fairly interesting unlike a lot of newer FPS's (cough cough Elite Force 2).

I didn't play long enough to pick up on all the voices, but I can see myself buying this one. My only question is, can Adam West ever possibly top the role of Mayor Adam West from Family Guy?

Enter key does work. However, your mouse speed is changed back to defaults if you reload the level (a bug!).

Edit: Heh, Adam West does indeed do the voice of General Carrington.

When you change options from within a level, they don't stick

the keys will change.. i believe if you hit enter to save them... for some reason it doesn't show enter will save from within the game but it does in the menus... i'm 90% sure that that worked
