BioWare & Obsidian

BioWare Forms New Development Relationship Exploring Projects With Feargus Urquhart's Obsidian Entertainment is the press release announcing a new collaborative relationship between BioWare and Obsidian, which turns out to be where former Black Isle Studios president Feargus Urquhart has landed (as CEO). The deal is for both PC and console games, with the quote provided from Urquhart indicating that they will be taking on one or more established properties: "A collaboration with BioWare gives Obsidian the opportunity to explore development projects on established game franchises with proven technology and brand loyalty from the fan community. This is an excellent opportunity for a new studio looking to make an immediate impact in the market."

Baldur's Gate 3 was project Jefferson, now on indefinate hold. The only way IPLY could publish a FR DnD game was if it was under the Icewind Dale or Baldur's Gate Franchise. The following was confirmed about Project Jefferson: it was 3rd Ed DnD and it took place in the Forgotten Realms (most likely the Dalelands). Shortly after IPLY lost the Baldur's Gate License, it was announced on the Black Isle Forums that Project Jefferson was on indefinate hold. Given that information it is very safe to assume that Jefferson was BG3.

Jefferson sounded like a far superior game to the Baldur's Gates so I wouldn't exactly call it a franchise whore. In all likelyhood it would have put Bioware to shame (not hard considering how dismal NWN was). Oh well, at least we've got Fallout 3 coming.
