Secret Weapons of WW2 Demo Friday

The Battlefield 1942 Website (thanks Frans) has word that Friday is when to expect a demo for the Secret Weapons of World War II add-on for Battlefield 1942. The update includes a couple of new screenshots, with the promise of more to come tomorrow. Here's the scoop on the demo:
The demo also unleashes the power of ten of the 16 new weapons in Secret Weapons of WWII. Fly and fight at the same time with the experimental German rocket pack, or buzz the skies in one of the new compact dynamo fighter planes—the Axis Natter rocket plane or the Allied F-85 Goblin. Both the Axis and Allies also have new motorcycles with machine gun-mounted sidecars, as well as amphibious assault vehicles: the German Schwimmwagen and the American LVT-2 Water Buffalo. The new Axis Flakpanzer, a T-38 tank with an anti-aircraft gun mounted on top, is a nasty beast—but it looks tame compared to the Allies’ Sherman tank with a T-34 Calliope rocket launcher.

With all this plus new hand-held weapons such as silenced SMGs, new assault rifles, and deadly throwing knives, become a deadly force on the most intense virtual battlefields ever created. Prepare yourself for all-out war in the Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII demo, available August 8, 2003 here at the official BF1942 website.

Well the thing is, the rocketpack isn't made up. They were actually developing one during WW2...hence the title Secret Weapons. They were kept secret because they didn't work.

You need to do a little research before you conclude that the weapons are "fake." All of the weapons in Secret Weapons were actually being used and tested during WW2, even though most didn't see a lot of actual combat during the war. The Germans had a lot of things up their sleeves that didn't win them the war but maybe could have had they had more time and man resources during the later half of the conflict.

Their (Hitler's) Assault Rifle, for instance, would have been a lot more devistating had they not run out of men towards the end that could have used the weapon in greater masses. This rifle was way ahead of anything the allies were using in this category. Luckily the Allies, once again, had the far superior man power at the conclusion of the war.

With the people complaining about the rocketpack.... it really doesn't sound as bad as some people seem to think it will be..... it sounds like the rocketpack is very hard to control, and very limited (i.e. usually with only one rocketpack on the map)... and with a limited amount of fuel. It sounds like they have handled most of the concerns, and it doesn't sound like this is going to turn it into Tribes or something.

"They were kept secret because they didn't work"

that'd actually be funny if they didn't work in the game either... you'd get like 2 feet off the air and then burst into a ball of flames.

In fact, one of the technological innovations that 3rd Reich scientists developed was the modern day assault rifle. In fact, the Nazi design was so effective it is still around today; the AK-47. Oh it's been tweaked and modified a bit, especially the newer models, but for all intents and purposes it's the same weapon the Nazi's had. If they'd been able to develop and mass produce an assault rifle like that, the impressive firepower advantage the Nazi's enjoyed for the bulk of the conflict would have been even more overpowering. It might not have been a deciding factor in the war, but then one can never tell.

As for the rocket packs, I'm stuck thinking of that little Nazi propaganda flick from "The Rocketeer", with the thousands of 3rd Reich RocketTroopers soaring over the Capitol and whatnot. Of course, in BF1942 it's going to be a lot cooler since you can plink them out of the sky. Wonder if you'll be able to have a jetpack instead of a parachute?

You dumbass. The StG44 may look like an AK47, but they are two totally different weapons. Aside from the fact that Kalishnakov was working on a prototype before '44 (i think it was either 42 or 43, I have to check), the Germans didnt issue any StG43 in any large quantities. Even after improving on the design and getting the StG44, they still didnt have enough to issue in any large numbers.

As for the StG44-AK47 similarities: The similarities end in the looks.

First off, the StG44 was unreliable and required a lot of maintenance and cleaning. Secondly, most of the parts in the gun were packed in tight, therefore allowing sand/dirt/etc to screw up the moving parts inside.

The AK47 however, is the most reliable gun on the entire planet. You can shove it under sand, throw dirt on it, bury it in dirt and come back a year later, go underwater, and just about anything you can think of, and it will still fire. The parts inside the gun are spread out, and even if a lot of dirt or sand gets in it, it will still fire. Why the hell do you think so many armies/rebel/people around the world use it? Its user-friendly. It is a conscript-army's dream. Low maintenance, high reliability, and it packs a big punch.

Please become more informed before spouting off opinion disguised as fact.

Yeah, pretty sure I saw a show on the History channel that pointed the roots of the AK-47 right to Nazi Germany. Sure, the Russians tinkered with a lot of technology but they stole the best of it.

Other examples is their B-29 copy and their early jets which look just like late war Nazi prototypes.

i know it annoys the crap out of me that all these "realistic" WWII mods have the bloody StG. 44 in them... and nary an MG34 'cept of course DoD...

It sounds like you can only fly vertically, like a big jump. You also have to keep an eye on your fuel. When you decend, you have to fire it to slow yourself down. If you jumped too high with low fuel, you might not have enough fuel to land. Then of course landing will be difficult since anyone you didn't kill will be firing on the spot your landing. It will be pretty hard to land quickly while defending your self without hitting the ground too hard. And you'll probably be easier to take out since the pack is explosive.

It doesn't sound like it will be Tribes 2, this rocketpack is too limited. I can't wait to sneek up on a spawn point for them and shoot the enemy when they put that bomb on their back. I also hope it has splash damage.
