Half-Life 2/ATI Bundle?

German site Gamestar.de (thanks HomeLAN Fed) has word (in German, naturally, here's the rough Babel Fish translation) has word from their sister print publication that the release of ATI's RADEON 9900 Pro video card will be bundled with Half-Life 2. They also have word that the game is expected to go gold on September 13, though they do not offer the basis for this claim, though they do point out that both the gold date and the ATI news add further confusion to recent stories about the game's release date (story and story) and an interesting wrinkle to discussions of video card support (story and story).

Has ATI even announced the 9900? And if they did is it just a higher clocked 9800 or is it more of a next generation card?

I've got a 9800 pro. Unless you've got lots of money to burn, don't bother, it's a waste of cash. Get a 9500 and spend the rest on ram, or better yet get a real sound card and stop using that cruddy onboard audio.

I just bought an AiW 9700 Pro about a month ago, and took it back to CompUSA for an exchange for a 9800. I love the 9800, though, it isn't that much better than the 9700. Basically all the 9800 was just a higher clocked card than the 9700. If this will be the truth for the 9900, then just save a hundred or so and buy the 9800, you won't be let down.

It's not uncommon for the gap between going gold and a game hitting the shelves to be around two weeks or so (sometimes longer), so this doesn't really add to the confusion much. This would still put the expected shelf-date at the 30th - that is if valve is still shooting for that date - which they claim to be.

I plan on getting a 9800, the 9900 will likely be way to expensive :/

Sitting here with a 9700 Pro, I can't even begin to imagine what ungodly levels of gaming power something like a 9900 Pro would bring..

On a side note, however, the price tag on that sucker is gonna make Steel Batallion's look like kiddie time at the dollar store!

If this is true, ATI is likely to have a VERY merry Xmas...

Well, I don't know much about the video card, but I do know I've been thinking about having to buy a 9800 to play Half-Life 2 on, so this could wind up being pretty cool.

I'm a little disbelieving that they'd be moving UP the release date, but it's not like I'd complain if they did!
