Out of the Blue

A few complaints have rolled in about the ad that scrolls a list of names as a memorial to gameplay casualties as being in questionable taste. I can't disagree about these concerns, and I asked the powers that be to remove this, and they were very accommodating. I am told that the offending spot ran for the last time last night. I've also seen other references to some Telco ad that plays an annoying ring tone... some said it was a Gator dealie, but others say they see it even after spyware checks. It turns out that some of the spots here are sold to folks who place ads specific to localities. I don't think there's supposed to be anything so obtrusive running in these overage spots, so we may be able to get the kibosh put on that one as well, the hard part may be tracking down who to contact about it (it may be helpful for those who are experiencing this one to pass along information about where they are located to aid in the detective work).

All this optimism aside, I do have to fire a warning shot that the days of being able to run this site with the relatively low-key ad presence are rapidly coming to a close. I have been battling this development forever, and seeing the need to give some ground here, have been battling equally hard to make sure that the advertising presence here remains tolerable. We will indeed be dragged into the 21st century here soon enough, and I can only hope you will continue to enjoy the ride.

More Ads! Aug 3, 2003, 03:27

Go for it. Plaster them everywhere. Put them in-between news items. The more ads the better.

Of course I'm insane - but that has nothing to do with it. I want Blue's News to go on forever, and that can only happen if Blue can pay the bills. And the more money he pulls-in, the more he can do for us, the readers. So the ads are a small price to pay.

Subscriptions don't work. You get a bunch at the start, but then it will decrease continually. Look at the straights a lot of subscription and donation sites are in. And they have to make like PBS and run subscription drives, which is always far more annoying than ads.

Slap 'em on! More ads!

One thing I'd suggest is try to have ads hosted at e.g. adserver.bluesnews.com or something, they seem to be currently from a well known advertiser and hence ad-blockers like mine [TweakXP Pro] dont show them up at all. By hosting them from a domain unique to blues, people would have to add them specifically. Few will bother to to this since the ads here are generally unobtrusive; dont take all day for us narrow-band connectors to download; and is anyway the sort of quality site most of us would rather support.

Another consideration perhaps is a unobtrusive sponsored link to buy from amazon or wherever, a few places have this and its normal price for people who buy that method, and the source site gets a cut. Aslong as its a quiet unobtrusive link, used only on larger posts about that game, I think a lot of readers would find this an excellent way to support the site while buying something they were going to buy anyway - I normally buy from play.com but would buy from amazon if it was similar price and would give some support to a fave site. Like the current ads these could do with being location-specific.

how about an option to have only 1 days worth of news showing up? I visit blues every day, so the second day's worth of news NEVER gets looked at, it's been wasting bandwidth for several years now.

Hey Blue,

Why don't you what Sluggy Freelance just did and have a limited time pledge drive. Get yourself a PayPal account and advertise it for just a single month along with pimping those great shirts (i'm wearing the blue one right now) and have a goal meter showing how much you need for a year's bandwith.

Make it an annual event, and hopefully you'll get enough to keep you solvent and buried in Java and Bawls.
(and maybe a chew toy for Hudson, or skunk de-stinker; whichever is most needed)

As has been posted before, do pupups and popunders, but please no noisy ads or the fancy java/flash/shock/whatever ones that dance across the screen. Personally, I'd be willing to shell out money directly to the Blue-man, but I know that a lot of people do not have the resources to contribute.. like young teenagers and so forth. I'd probably point to gamespy as the least annoying example of a content-rich popular site, but I know they also provide dowloads and software so I dunno if that's a reasonable comparison. In the end I am sure you will make a good decision Blue... till then keep up the good work! we love yooooou
