One thing i gotta wonder about, not specifically physics but how many weapons can you carry? In both Half life and doom(s) you carry a riduculous amount of weapons. Not that i HATE the variety, but i hate how it seems to kills to suspension of reality by being able to carry a full GUNSn AMMO catalog of weapons.... i wonder if they'll limit your inventory size?

Rockclimber, I too find myself looking for a cool game/mod. I've played Urban Terror for a looooong time (some of the modders were in our clan) but it's gone too slow, and T2.... well, let's just say that's another topic 1942 is cool but not strategic enough. Doesn't allow for many different ways of playing and the people who play don't seem to care about teamplay. TK-ing to get a plane. Or if they're just too late, shoot the plane. Stuff like that. Too bad though. Could've been a lot more fun. Anyway's, I just wait for the next good game I s'pose.

Now I'm waiting for a

Heh, I hear ya rock, I'm still waiting for the next Tribes game. (still playing Tribes 2 daily) I really hope Tribes: Vengeance will be da bomb. Bf1942 doesnt seem "clany" enough for me...dunno why.

I WILL get all of the those games people talk so much about (HL2, DOOM3, Stalker, DX2, Thief 2 etc) and so will most of you, so why do we always try to pick one above the other?

*cause this is a forum you retard*

I think HL2 will be a blast, and I am pretty damn stoked about DOOM3 too.

From my point of view, I am looking for the next big Online FPS game. I really don't care what it is, as long as it hs the quality of online play I have come to expect in the games I get deeply involved with. I'm into the whole competetive play/clan thing, and right now there is nothing out there worth playing hard IMO. It's all been done to death. In the past I have always played Quake games, or mods based on Quake engines, with the exception of Tribes 1 and 2. The last one I played, before I decided to take some time off, was Urban Terror, a Q3 mod. It's pretty fun, but is evolving too slowly and I played it to death. Now I find myself with nothing to play....

Valve knows HL1 multiplayer wasn't popular, and hopefully they have learned from that. DOOM 3's multiplayer will be designed for 4 players (from what we have heard so far). This means it could be a couple months after DOOM 3 hits shelves before we see even a basic mod, and the appropriate sized maps, that allow for a 16-32 player game. Kind of a bummer, but like I said, who knows. Maybe id will get the tools out to us around xmas time so we can get some stuff started.

Yes, thats exactly what I mean, but now we are talking about the engine, not the game. Alot of people are saying ,just like you about HL2, that the D3 engine is great and will spawn many great games. THE game Doom 3 on the otherhand might just be good, not something that we will play after 3 weeks-2 months.

HL2 might be a little better gameplay wise. But it's the same thing there. It's SP, I don't think I will play it over and over again after I have finished it. Haven't heard much about the MP, but HL1 MP isn't really what Valve is famous for.

The mods that will follow after HL2 (CS2, TF2, etc) will keep the Source engine on the top, that's for sure.

SO now you maybe understand when I whince when people praise HL2 (the game) so highly over everything else, when it's actually the engine they are so excited about. HL2 is just another SP game that will be fun for a while...

It's not just the physics we are talking about. It's the way they are implemented in the game. For example, pretty much EVERYTHING in the game world has appropriate physical properties. Most games have some selected items with these properties, but not nearly enough. With Source, they have made it easy, by attatching these properties via the texture you choose to apply. This is a modder's dream feature. This is the only engine I have seen to date that refracts light properly under water too, which is kick ass. DOOM3 probably does too, but I haven't seen it yet.

I have no doubt that Carmack's engine will kick ass. They always do. Half Life has been, and continues to be, an extremely popular engine to mod with, and after all, it is a Quake based engine. People are still pumping out full blown games from that old engine. I think it will be interesting to see which one becomes the dominant modding engine.

I think it will be Source (HL2) for a couple reasons. 1, they already have a HUGE modder base that are dying to get ahold of this. 2, HL2 will be in our faces several months before DOOM3, which allows all these hungry modders to start playing with Source much sooner than DOOM3.

Carmack bought himself a few more months for polish, it seems, so I'm hoping we will get some unexpected surprises.

I'm personally looking forward to doing some mapping for Source. I hope we see the tools soon.

I'm glad that some people have noticed that HL2 isn't the only game with physics. I was starting to get a little tired of the same old; "0mG HL2 r0xx0rz all cause it has physics!1111" D3 has it, Chaser had some cool physics too, glass breaking realisticly, wood splintering, ragdoll. Alot of other comming games will have it.

Sometimes it seems like I'm the only one not going apeshit about HL2's physics. I just think it will be a good game.

Seems like physics to me, or am I wrong here?

Ive been playing with the Doom 3 Alpha recently and believe me it has physics, boxes get bounced around barrells get thrown down stairs, swiftly followed by tumbling dead zombies full of machine gun rounds

Its pretty cool, the amazing thing is even in the alpha demo of how drawn in it pulls you, all the things from realistic lighting to the physics all help and make you realise not only how important these things now are in games, but also how much better they make it.

And I havent even mentioned the graphics yet,..

I see some posts about how fab the physics are (true) and that it's the only game that has it to such an extend. I'm not sure but I seem to remember that the doom3 movie had a little part where the player is in a small room (or a big closet) and there's being shot at a wall with a few shelves with some cans and stuff on it. Then the shelves got hit, gave way and the stuff on it fell and tumbled to the ground. Seems like physics to me, or am I wrong here?

#16 mentioned that the player didn't take any damage, and that that must've meant they were in Godmode playing the game. On closer inspection, it turns out that's not true, since at least in Traptown the player takes damage to both the HEV suit armor and the player health. Granted, this damage isn't terribly significant, and could indicate that the damage was tweaked down a bit for the playthrough, but it could just as well indicate that they were playing on "I don't want to die!" level of difficulty

every time I see a dumpster up on blocks, I'm looking for the thing I'm supposed to squash with it. Knowing you can if you want to though... that's freaking awesome!!

Nice analogy. I finally got around to finishing Return to Castle Wolfenstein last night.
The last level had me thinking the same thing. "Oh look at that big thing. I guess I'm supposed to drop that on someone."
What I'm curious to see is what kind of ingenious solutions to problems can be worked out and whether you can one up the game somehow by creative thinking. eg: reaching areas you shouldn't be able to reach.

The more movies they show the more I see of the ho-hum graphics. I really really don't seen any real improvements here. I hope most people don't fall for the hype of this game. No wonder the LOD can go so low...

The graphics are far beyond ho hum. You're basing your opinion on a captured demo at 1024x768. And it still looks good. And what does "No wonder the LOD can go so low" mean?
