No DOOM 3 This Year

Though id Software basically invented the idea of using "when it's done" as a release date, and thus did not specify a release date when DOOM 3 was announced (story), many have been assuming that the game would be available for this year's holiday season (and jcal points out the DOOM 3 E3 billboard did clearly promise this year). Now a report on HomeLAN Fed cites Activision's 2003 release calendar and quarterly financial conference call to gain a bit more clarity on when to expect the highly anticipated shooter sequel. Activision admits that this matter is entirely in id's hands, but that they are not expecting the game this year, and have it "penciled" on their calendars for fiscal Q4 (Jan-March) 2004. Further actual release date delays were gleaned from the proceedings as well, including word that True Crime: Streets of LA is now due in late fall 2003 and that Rome: Total War, console Call of Duty, Quake IV, and Trinity are now all due in Fiscal 2005 (which begins April 2004).

Damn, I was one of those who was expecting it just in time for the holidays. I guess there is much more work to be done on the game that I orginally thought. I read somewhere Carmack thought more would have been done at some point (several months back). Appearantly, this might be what he was afraid of. I guess I'll push back my upgrade for a few more months then. Half-Life 2 then is diffenently gonna make a killing 4th QTR.

"What a surprise!" I expected this considering the wake-up call Valve sent to iD.

Back to the drawing board.

I have an idea... Maybe DukeNukem has a chance to make it in the line up this year? UGhhhhhhhhhhh??? No, I think not.

EDIT: Good observation Hump, no doubt the execs are a little nervous about going head to head with HL2

Deja Edit: Fiscal Q4 != Q4 2004, chalk this one up to my dumb self. First edit still relevant tho

I'm telling you all now. People will complain about Doom3 somehow because of the stupid "OMG I NEED A 5GHZ TO RUN THE GAME!!@@!11" jokes, even though a PC that can run D3 by March will be pretty common and cheap.

This announcement was pretty crushing though, I was really looking forward to Rome Total War and Quake4.

Heh. I wasn't even on planning to get this one. HL2, DX2, STALKER and Thief III will all serve me fine. Doom III can suck on it.

The delay is kinda strange though, because most of the preview info I've read recently made it sound like it was almost done.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22
Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?

Well that's disappointing. I guess they have nothing to gain by post-poning and we get a more stable and feature rich product. For once it is also good to see that the big
publisher cannot muscle in and pressurise the developer in releasing an incomplete product before it is done.

I am expecting a well polished product and I think that is what we'll get... maybe a bit later than expected.

I'm sure there will be other games to fill the vacuum while we wait. (Does this mean I don't have to upgrade to that P4-3ghz-geforcefx5900 before xmas? Oh hang on HL2 is still on schedule... we hope

Well despite this news being a major downer, I am glad I haven't yet upgraded my ti4400 videocard I bought last year. This gives me a perfect chance to save some bucks

BOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo . JC better stop playing with rockets and do more coding !

I agree.
After getting the 500MB+ 25 Min E3 video of HL2, and seeing the few min E3 Doom3 video. While Doom3 does look better in my opinion (damn that part where the mosnter bangs down the door, and one crawling on the wall is scary as hell looking!) HL2 appears to have alot more depth, and better gameplay. Maybe now ID will do some stuff to improve it, not just make it look sweet!

Thats some sad news as I was hoping to see what all the hoopla was about. I had a feeling the game wouldn't be out this year as the released information has been rather scarce when compared to HL2. Now, it'll really be sad if HL2 was delayed as well.

*cough* You mean like Id did with quake 3? So they could get it out for Christmas? and the finally finished it with Team Arena, like Q3 should of been/had?

I was big id fan up until Q3A. I refused to buy that one. And I was not surprised to see this in the least bit.

I don't think id has ever gone up against another big (HL2 type) game. They are playing it safe and allow for more work to be done on the game. Which they will need since they have never been strong in any areas expect ground break graphics and scary environments.

As far as great story and great gameplay from start to finish... well we can always hope. My bet is that Doom 3 is just another good game that mainly is a show piece for the engine. Sorry, but that is what I have seen from the past 3 or 4 games...

Still love id games, they just are not tops when it comes to great gameplay to include a strong storyline.
