No DOOM 3 This Year

Though id Software basically invented the idea of using "when it's done" as a release date, and thus did not specify a release date when DOOM 3 was announced (story), many have been assuming that the game would be available for this year's holiday season (and jcal points out the DOOM 3 E3 billboard did clearly promise this year). Now a report on HomeLAN Fed cites Activision's 2003 release calendar and quarterly financial conference call to gain a bit more clarity on when to expect the highly anticipated shooter sequel. Activision admits that this matter is entirely in id's hands, but that they are not expecting the game this year, and have it "penciled" on their calendars for fiscal Q4 (Jan-March) 2004. Further actual release date delays were gleaned from the proceedings as well, including word that True Crime: Streets of LA is now due in late fall 2003 and that Rome: Total War, console Call of Duty, Quake IV, and Trinity are now all due in Fiscal 2005 (which begins April 2004).

Wouldn't it be neat to play doom and doom 2 on the doom 3 engine?

I read somewhere that the video card was some sort of non-standard hyrbrid; like it was a GF3 missing 1 or 2 features, or a GF2 with 1 or 2 of the GF3 features.

Then again, I'm no x-box expert.

Actually the Xbox uses a Geforce 2 part and a 733 mghz P3. Time flies doesn't it? Actually I'm running alot of games at work on a celeron 533 with geforce 2 mx. I'm only doing this because I have to. But it runs most stuff I throw at it.

JC also said that he can get another 50% performance increase out of the engine by optimizing it for the concrete specific hardware setup of the xbox.

Between the much lower resolutions, slower required fps, and being a fixed hardware spec, it's easily possible JC can get it running nicely on there.

At that low a resolution, the 700MHz (or whatever) CPU in the xbox should be able to run it with some of the features turned off.

Exactly, any compromises at that low resolution probably won't be significant. You could reduce polycounts and texture resolution without anyone noticing.

I'm fairly sure it will be ported eventually, if only because the console market is so lucrative.

I have no doubts an X-Box can run Doom 3. It's running Doom 3 without any compromises is what I don't think will happen.

"The GF3 isn't that bad of a card at this point. My brother still uses my old GF2 to play the current games at 800x600, and he says it runs things fine."

I agree a GF3 and even a GF2 can run things fine (less the DirectX features they don't support) if you have the horsepower in the CPU. I'm running a GTS and it is stuttering like mad in todays games (they are mostly unplayable) because my old CPU can't push it and I'm not a frame junky. I'd be quite happy with a 30 fps average.

If you notice, the minimum requirements are a GF1. Heck, it wasn't THAT long ago I remember him saying that a GF3 would run it nicely. The GF3 isn't that bad of a card at this point. My brother still uses my old GF2 to play the current games at 800x600, and he says it runs things fine.

Honestly, nobody KNOWS how DOOM3 will run yet, let alone on an XBox. The Alpha shouldn't be a basis to prove minimum requirements, as it hadn't been optimized yet. The MOST you can say about the Alpha is that IF your machine did a good job running it, then it should run the final fine. But if it ran like crap, it still might be able to run the final version at an ok frame rate.

Let's play the wait-and-see game.

"JC has stated that he can release Doom3 on XBOX without compromising the quality"

How could a game that requires a Geforce((5?) can't think of the chipset)on the PC to be fully realized, graphically, be ported to the X-Box, which is based on the Geforce 3, wihtout being compromised?

I agree fully that it's hard to get over the costs of a console over a PC but until I can plug a mouse and keyboard into a console or play 64 play mp or download or, more importantly, create, any mod I want for any game on a console then it will be hard for me to replace the PC. It would be great if one day a console could do it all but until then, like you say, we'll need both. Although the X-Box is the closest thing yet to a one unit solution.

I'm glad someone liked unreal. At the time it came out it was the best looking game out there. They released it at a good time (between Quake releases). Unreal sold alot of copies because od that. I also used to use the opening loop as a burn in for my CPU's. Other than those two things the game bored the hell out of me.

other songs in Doom are e.g. E3M1 -> "Mouth For War" by Pantera. or E3M3 -> "Behind The Crooked Cross" by the evil SLAYER...
the songs are rearranged in such a funny way -> starting off exactly as the original and then slowly transforming into something more approbable for the game.
the soundtrack of the Doom-games is still a terrific enhancement for the mood of the whole game ... I love it.
btw...yesterday we played the leaky by a friend (ab)using his sony-projector and Xp and ... it was amazing. but the spare use of enemies is way too boring! the only scenes that stuck out were in e3_1 at the beginning(zombies) and in e3_3 the scene with the staircase where the ragdoll-fatso comes down and after him 2 imps.
I'm not judging the leaked 1Gbyte shadowmaker but I hope the final stuff gets much more hellish, organic and monster infested...

have fun

if you listen closely to map01's beat, it is almost an exact copy of the very beginning of head like a hole by nine inch nails. there are a few other maps based off other bands as well, map18 for example is a piece of this love, by pantera.

i wish someone would have made a list of which songs were based off what, that would be cool.

Not to dis', cause you sound like you are full of hate and I wouldn't want to draw your ire...

If Doom3 even comes out on XBOX it will be ultimate confirmation of console gaming. The XBOX currently costs 179.99 at ebgames.com. A Geforce4 ti4600 (4x max agp)(8x max is more than an XBOX so I was conservative) currently costs 158.00 from the shadyest spot on pricewatch.com. JC has stated that he can release Doom3 on XBOX without compromising the quality. If Doom3 ever comes out on XBOX, and the max players is 4 p2p for PC, it will be a slap in the face to PC gamers everywhere because the XBOX can handle that. PC gamers have deluded themselves for a long time with what consoles can and cannot handle. I proudly play both because its the only way to play all the great games. If dissing console games make you feel good go ahead, but playing all games feels the best. I am sorry you are too poor to afford both.

As far as not falling short of 2003, when Activision says a game isn't coming out in 2003, its not coming out in 2003. You sir, are an idiot.

The music in DOOM 1/2 was my first ever taste of what would be Techno. I can fondly remember turning off all the sfx and simply listening to the tango-style track of the first level of DOOM 2, or tapping my fingers at the song that played as your kills were summarized in bloody red splotches.

Even better though would be if they threw in some of the original music from DOOM 1 (with maybe a remix or two).

But I don't think it's Trent's style though and it wouldn't fit in with the new horror-survival focus. Come to think of it, who is doing the music for D3 now?

Not trying to discredit your example, but the original unreal was optimized and writting mostly for glide if I remember right. Your right it was really bad in opengl and d3d compared to glide, but if you ever played it with glide it ran very well.

"When It's Done" is better than "When It's Done Enough". Think about it. Remember when Quake II came out... and how BUGGY it was, out of the box? How long was it between that time, and the v3.20 FINAL patch release? Same with Unreal I, perhaps an even better example.

To see what I mean, try this: Install Unreal I (the original release CD) on your system and play through 4 or 5 levels. The graphic performance, both OpenGL and D3D, are poor. The textures are different. The weapons look different. The weapons SOUND different. The game FEELS different---it's like playing a f*cking BETA, Actually, that's exactly what it was when it came out, after all that time, the first game to incorporate that new engine.

So think of it this way - Duke Nukem Forever was out a long time ago. And Doom III was out for a couple months already. Only now, the Beta testers are limited to company employees, rather than all of us.

UNREAL remains one of my favorite SP games of all time, second only to HALF-LIFE. Playing through UNREAL that first time was one of the most pleasurable gaming experiences I can remember. I'd just remember it being a lot better yet if the game was actually done, and not done "enough".

yeah, the thins about DOOM3 is though, it doesn't need Xmas. The name alone will sell this game like mad, anytime of year. Xmas doesn't hurt, but I doubt it's a huge concern.

I know they were only simple midi's (or maybe mod's) but that music was great.

Anyone know if Trent is going to have a hand in the music / ambient sounds / sound effects ?

IMO, one (ONE) of the best things about Q1 was the music, but this is coming from a big NIN fan...

anyways... it's probably old news that I missed or something but i remember reading a blurb somewhere or other about nin and D3...
