No DOOM 3 This Year

Though id Software basically invented the idea of using "when it's done" as a release date, and thus did not specify a release date when DOOM 3 was announced (story), many have been assuming that the game would be available for this year's holiday season (and jcal points out the DOOM 3 E3 billboard did clearly promise this year). Now a report on HomeLAN Fed cites Activision's 2003 release calendar and quarterly financial conference call to gain a bit more clarity on when to expect the highly anticipated shooter sequel. Activision admits that this matter is entirely in id's hands, but that they are not expecting the game this year, and have it "penciled" on their calendars for fiscal Q4 (Jan-March) 2004. Further actual release date delays were gleaned from the proceedings as well, including word that True Crime: Streets of LA is now due in late fall 2003 and that Rome: Total War, console Call of Duty, Quake IV, and Trinity are now all due in Fiscal 2005 (which begins April 2004).

So Hellbinder, taking the ATI biased jargon out of your post, basically, the latest Nvidia gpus won't run HL2 well because Valve was too lazy to do a two pronged development approach (much like Carmack is doing with Doom 3). Then it's no one's fault but Valve's that the game doesn't run well on Nvidia cards.

Anyone else think something along the lines of a simultaneous xbox release could have been a factor in this?

With the 3x10^18 number of games being released in September, my budget really wasn't looking that forward to having Doom 3 out sometime soon after anyways.

And who knows, maybe Id decided to add some things to their engine, or some more levels, to make the game even better. It can only be a good thing.

BlackGlass : I'm pretty sure Deus Ex : IW is still scheduled for an October release, as nothing I've read indicates otherwise (and if it mentions Deus Ex, I read it avidly). Thief III was always scheduled for sometime next year AFAIK.

But as for SWG. Heh, I told you so

A better reason for a 5900Ultra is HL2.

Better go read soem threads at Beyond3d and some of the latest interviews with the Valve guys. The Entire DX9 developent of HL2 was done on the Radeon cards. Also the Nv35 is screwed for FSAA in that game. But most importantly becuase the Nv30/35 has flat out screwed up Pixel and Vertex shaders it cant run the HQ HL2 shaders worth a DAMN. In fact it was stated in reference at B3d that the Lead Valve guys says that the 9800pro runs the DX9 shaders for HL2 5x-10X FASTER than the 5900U.

This is the bottom line truth. Its only going to get worse with future games that use even more shaders. Unless of course Nvidia gets away with even more application detection and IQ hacking than they are now.

I love that game and I have been able to get much deeper into the world and game mechanics than any other MMOG that I have played.........yet it has some really, really rough edges. Overall, it seems to be a better launch than most, but parts of the game are broken. We cannot build medium or large flora harvestors, the faction system is completely out of wack, they are balancing the resources daily (here today, gone tomorrow), the player-driven market needs to stabilize, NPC difficulty changes second by second, the server cuases multiple-player CTDs, etc.

I think the worst thing is how the skills system has been implemented. The game is, what, about a month old and we have all just about mastered our characters. As there are a finite amount of skill points, there really is not anything more to learn, much less do. Yeah, you can cancel skills and work on others, but that is a real waste after all the time spent building up a master-level skill.

IRL Back in this reality, things have pretty much sucked. My mother has now been in the hospital for...I think it will be four weeks this coming Monday. Every two to three days, they pump a few liters of liquid out of her stomach cavity and at least that is more than they can do for her feet (adema?)

Happy, happy, joy, joy - for sure.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure but I think DX2 is still on slate for this year...

EDIT: Yeah, my latest PCGAMER says late 2003 for DX2. Also in response to the Stalker date, it's supposed to come out 1st half 2004, not late in the year.

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22

Emm I don't think that DX2 is gong to be released this year either, I can't remember what site I read it on (anybody here read it and know what site it was) but the reporter claimed that Eidos had comfirmed to him that DX2 would not ship before the end of the year, and if that is delayed (if its true) what is going to happen to my beloved Thief 3?

Filter,

No way. id Software will not revamp their game because of HL2. I'm sure they feel confident in what they're doing. The schedule slip probably has nothing to do with them worrying about being destroyed by HL2. That may or may not happen in the market quite apart from anything they could possibly do. Sometimes its just not in your control.

I'm pretty sure they ignore most of the griping that gamers do out there. They probably listen to the currents but in the end make the game they want to make. Let others make the games they want to make. The LAST thing I would ever want id Software to do is LISTEN INTENTLY TO GAMERS or have a FOCUS GROUP or some such idiocy. I buy what THEY make because its THEIRS and THEY think its cool, not what YOU or any other gamer makes, which is nothing.

If I don't like it, that's fine, but I would never want any game company to do anything but make a game that they want to make. You can't sustain a project that long any other way. It would be sheer drudgery otherwise.

The one thing keeping me from believing that article is the fact that no one else has brought up issues with both ATI's and Nvidia's FSAA. Why is it only Valve is speaking about it? ... Makes me think it's not a bug with the hardware, but a bug with the (Half-Life 2) software.
[Note] Who really cares about FSAA anyway? When I'm blasting away aliens I don't take time to see if their edges are smooth or not :).

Now since Doom3 has been put off and HL2's release date is nearing... should one buy the Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb, GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, or wait for newer technology? I cant seem to make up my mind
