Game Grants in France

France offers grants for games (thanks Mike Martinez) is an article describing plans by the French Ministry of Culture to help game developers get through the current rough marketplace for game development with four million euros in subsidies. Here's more:
The government will pay for up to 40% of the cost of turning a concept into a working version of a game.

But there are strings attached to the millions of euros up for grabs. To get a slice of the cash, firms have to be French and the work developing an idea must be done in France itself.

And there are limits to the sort of game the French Government is willing to pay for.

It will not hand out grants for violent or pornographic games. This effectively excludes a whole genre of gaming popular among young men such as Grand Theft Auto titles.

Actually there are many developers in France, but a lot went bankrupt in the last 2 years following the crash of the Net economy, and because of a very bad financial period. But there still are many studios. I don't think we are (I'm french) pissed by the name changing, most of french gamers really don't care. Infogrames (now Atari) is just trying to capitalize on a former popular brand to gain more money, and to appear more "international", less local. Atari was very well known here too, so they seem to win in both cases.
