Game Grants in France

France offers grants for games (thanks Mike Martinez) is an article describing plans by the French Ministry of Culture to help game developers get through the current rough marketplace for game development with four million euros in subsidies. Here's more:
The government will pay for up to 40% of the cost of turning a concept into a working version of a game.

But there are strings attached to the millions of euros up for grabs. To get a slice of the cash, firms have to be French and the work developing an idea must be done in France itself.

And there are limits to the sort of game the French Government is willing to pay for.

It will not hand out grants for violent or pornographic games. This effectively excludes a whole genre of gaming popular among young men such as Grand Theft Auto titles.

Actually there are many developers in France, but a lot went bankrupt in the last 2 years following the crash of the Net economy, and because of a very bad financial period. But there still are many studios. I don't think we are (I'm french) pissed by the name changing, most of french gamers really don't care. Infogrames (now Atari) is just trying to capitalize on a former popular brand to gain more money, and to appear more "international", less local. Atari was very well known here too, so they seem to win in both cases.

They own interplay? I thought that company went under and some Koreans took it over.

Not sure which company your thinking of but Interplay is still alive and (just barely) kicking. Interplay isn't long for this world though, not unless BGDA2 and Fallout 3 prove to be major commercial successes (which seems highly unlikely).

Good point Nexus, although I doubt that 4 million Euros is going to cause much of a stir within Brussels.

As for the subsidy itself, it's probably not a bad idea. France is probably pissed as hell that Infogrames (French) decided to can their name, take the Atari (American) name, and now there really aren't all that many developers / publishers left in France.

Still, it's one of the few good things France has done in a VERY long time.

I wonder how this will stand up to european legislation. I remember that Britain subsidising the agricultural industry was a source of a lot of problems after the BSE crisis.
Frankly, I doubt this will survive a first pass through brussels.

ROTFLMFAO. I'll have to put that on my list of games I wanna make, along with "The Turbanator." I kid, I kid. <in my best Truimph the Dog voice> The French have about as much game as Fred Savage.

Ok, How about a "French Person Shooter" then?

That shoots up the American lexicon with a super-grammatically-correct French gun?
