Call of Duty Preview

Freed from the tyranny of insider-only status, the Call of Duty preview on PC.IGN.Com (thanks Frans) offers their first-hand impressions of the upcoming World War II shooter being created by the 2015 alumni at Infinity Ward. They offer some detailed impressions about the goings-on, focusing a bit on the capabilities of the modified Wolfenstein engine (itself a tweaked version of the Quake III engine), and offering an account of some impressive warfare:
At one point in time there were literally some 300 Russian soldiers on the beach, all running in different paths, some dying, some hurdling through the air from explosions, some cowering, others bravely and futilely returning fire... It was insanity! And, it was just the way it's supposed to be. Really, above any other wartime first-person shooter yet seen, Call of Duty seems to be very accurately and very deliberately attempting to recreate the intense and chaotic feel of combat by throwing delivering the sheer scope and horror of it all (sans gore).

If, as is quoted in the article, "...the engine behind Call of Duty has been totally redone. The renderer, the audio engine, the physics, the animation, the AI, the everything... It's all been reworked and retooled and even rewritten from the ground up. " then why make it a "Wolfenstein engine" game? Why even make it a "Q3 engine" game. Also, re-doing gameplay/weapon code goes without saying, so based on the above... what's left? The networking? The UI? The systems named are all the components of an "engine", so if you're gonna re-do everything, why pay for the licence? Just to have the "<blah> engine" name attached to the product? That's sad. I'm sure I'd never get an "official" answer to this, so what does anyone out there think? Would you be more/less inclined to buy this if it didn't have some engine (which it really doesn't use) printed on the box?

Holy goodness... I write 10 to 20 thousand words a day, people. You try doing that, publishing a site with eight million readers and a broken back-end, and then making sure your crap is legible without the help of a single copy editor. Have some degree of understanding. You know how much time I had to write that Call of Duty article? One hour.

i really hope they never release it as a pure mod.. i doubt they will anyways

the best they could do was make it server-side

oh and with the 1.4 patch it doesn't seem like you can explosive pack jump anymore

Perhaps, aided by the explosion concussions they were able to "hurdle through the air" over various obstacles like tank traps, walls and landmines and such. This would no doubt be similar to Rocket Jumping or using Expacks in BF1942 to "hurdle" over seemingly impassable barriers. Athough FF would have to be off, I agree with that. Tell me, was it an African or European map they were playing on?

I don't understand why the writer had to repeatedly reference other FPS titles for comparison to CoD. Does he expect the every IGN reader to be a well-read gamer (Like you and me)?

I dunno, it just got annoying.

MOH 2? Jul 20, 2003, 22:06
Jul 20, 2003, 22:06

I think this game is just going to be a MOH 2 adaptation. I mean MOH was so good, how can they improve? I think they dicided to call it Call of Duty and not Medal of Honour 2 so they can experiment and try a couple new things that the medal of honour franchise wouldn't allow. None the less it will be among the must have titles of gaming history.

is it the political correctness route or is it the route in being able to sell games in certain countries that have laws that ban swastikas. I think the latter. P.S. merciless is poo

I know some countries ban it, but its going the route of the lowest common denominator by not putting it where it is allowed, especially when the game is going for realism. But I don't think there is much of a point of argueing with someone who thinks the Battlefield 1942 Merciless pack is poo.

So, basically the guy was painting a picture of guys leaping over horizontal bars of wood in an olympic type of event, all while explosions hammer the ground around them in a mayhem of violence and death. Now THAT sounds like fun!

Hahaha, serious respect due for that image. Thank you

I think what that ign author meant to say was "some being hurled through the air.".

I wonder what the system requirements are for that Quake3Arena, RTWC adoption, "our programming team has replaced the renderer, the model and animation systems, the AI, the game scripting system, and the terrain system" -based engine
Hope they can keep it low unless Doom3 releases first (since then's when I'm getting a new rig).

I watched several gameplay movies on G-spot Live and the gameplay looks to be significantly faster than MoH's (though not isanely fast like RtCW which is far too fast for a tactical shooter IMO). Hoping this one's a winner like MoH.
