It will last me 'till September come Halflife 2

You dont have any effect on the game, and after a day all the bases you capped yesterday will be owned by somebody else anyway.

Once you are able to do the "much hyped" sanctuary attack, it will still be left standing the day after..

No you can't, there are 5 US servers (I think maybe just 4) and just 1 for Europe

Do people have the ability to create their own servers for this like Warforge did with Battle.net? Just curious.

The decal system was put in place after I left the game, apparently. Good for them, at least they listened to one request.

Hardcore FPS gamers that have come to expect a certain level of quality will probably be turned off by the game as soon as they get over the initial awe of the size and scale of it. At least that has been my observation from about 20 or so long time friends that have tried it. A few even paid for it and then cancled. What a waste of $50+.

I see PlanetSide as an important step forward for the idea of the MMOFPS. When they can deliver the granular detail of a game like Q3A, UT2003, Tribes 2, etc, then they will have something I will pay monthly for. PlanetSide just isn't there today. The fine details are missing, and it just screams at me when I play. It's those details that make the game world come alive, and serve as the doorway to "suspension of believe" or immersion.

I've been playing this for about 2 months now and I've been having a hell of a good time. I found the game to be very stable (crashed about 3 times since I started playing), if you are in a good squad (or outfit like the NCCP) every fight is enjoyable and if your squad is well organised any battle is winnable.

True if you lose your spawn points you probably will have to do quite a bit of walking to get anywhere or get any equipment, but you can just recall (in 10 > 30 secs) retool and drop straight back into the action and try to secure a spawn point for your empire.

The scarcity of cert terms is not really a problem, as you usually wont have time to access one in the field without being blown away

I never experienced any lag myself (I have a 1 megabit per second connection) but some of my friends say it is a problem.

Two complaints I do have though is that those bloody Vanu are too hard to kill one on one, and the Terrans chaingun is just too powerful. Other than that though the game kicks ass.

Hope to see you online (Werner)

I've been playing the live thing for a bit now and I think I can safely say it's probably one best avoided for now. It's buggy as hell (crashed 7 times this weekend alone, and by crash I mean it usually requires a reboot).

Worse, they are still ironing out the gameplay itself. I spend half my walking around. If you can't get to a equipment term, you are left with some pretty useless gear and serve mostly to annoy your enemy and hope to get him to use some ammo before he slaughters you and you get to try again. It's very hard to find a good balanced battle.

Plus you do all this fighting to get points so that you can use cert terms and upgrade you character. Problem is, cert terms are practically impossible to find, so half the time you can't use them anyway.

I'm sticking it out for a little bit, because I've already shelled out some cash - but I can't say I recommend this, or probably any other SOE product.

The purpose of the distributed data hashes would be to eliminate the need for a strong encryption algorithm. I think that in this way, the only way to modify the hashed data would be if you were in collusion with the other servers who are doing the checking. The network bandwidth and processing power required would likely be very high, so a small implementation today would only be a proof of concept for the future. Hey, I didn't say it would be easy. Oh yeah, and the point of all this would be to get rid of monthly fees, since that's a big gripe of alot of people.

We tried to get the developers to put some sort of Decal system in as well, so clans could put a logo on their suits, vehicles, and bases, and make the game feel more personal. No one listened.

Not the case at all. Once your outfit gets 10000 points, which doesn't take long, the outfit leader can get a decal for the entire outfit which shows up on armor and vehicles.

They should have had a focus group with experienced gamers. Instead, they took the road most stupid ass game companies take, and they made the game the way they thought it should be.

I disagree with this. Design by committee rarely works, just ask the British Army about their standard issue rifle. Designers should have specific goals that they want to achieve with a game, narrow those goals down into what can be reasonably acheived in a single game, and then run some of these final ideas by players to get their feedback. If what the fans ask for is infeasible or goes against the goals of what the devs are trying to acheive then that suggestion should not be used. Turning design decisions over to players will just cause huge problems for developers because A) players are rarely able to articulate exactly what they want B) the devs will never be able to satisfy everyone and C) they are no longer the ones designing the games, it's as if the players are the game's unofficial producers. That said player feedback is important but the idea that games should be focus tested is crap.

You make some good points about Planetsides weaknesses. I can definately see no longer being interested in the game by summer's end unless the dev's add some new content that seriously changes play dynamics. Even still, I'm enjoying playing in a very organized outfit where WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE WAR. Just the knowledge that the clan actually accomplishes something because of our organization is enough to keep me playing for a month or two more.

In a MMORPG, the client-side is more like "reporting" to the client. All the hit-points, combat actions, XP, loot, etc. are calculated and stored on the server. Then it just tells the client what happened.

This isn't possible at all under today's computer limitation because three problems. 1) No has a 100% unhackable algorithm! 2) Even if you could make a 100% unhackable algorithm, it about 512-bit or more, making the encrypted data far too large to be constantly sending over the Internet. 3) All your hashes and mashes don't mean squat as all data eventually becomes plain binary in RAM and the CPU registers. With those three weak points... that is all a dedicated hacker needs to do.

Then there is also an issue of you can't trust a server, what the hell good is the server. If you can't trust the server to say "Razor_the_Warrior" killed the Gold Dragon, then what can you trust. And if when you killed that Gold Dragon, you gotta check some encrypted packets with 3 other servers to see if he's somehow cheating, what good the server. This just becomes an exponential cluster fuck.

Of course, if you can make some kind of algorithm that is unhackable under all circumstances and doesn't add significant bandwidth, then you -- my friend -- would be richer than Bill Gates.

Re to SCG

I still think it could be possible. Possibly generating hashes based on what the data should be and communicating this information to other locations. The other locations could check the validity of other servers data to insure that someone hadn't tampered with game variables. As it is now, every game that can have client side servers will have some ammount of cheaters, it's just a matter of how well the methods used against them are that determines how bad the problem is. I would doubt that any game would use it, mainly because it wouldn't make economic sense. I could see a team of open source developers taking something like the Quake2 source and experimenting with it though, it could be interesting as a proof of concept.

its a decent first attempt.. i have a feeling tho.. that the majority of the beta testers were RPG'ers and not FPS folks. ima wait for Tribes3.. im hoping that it owns up.. and doesnt fail to deliver like Tribes2 did at first.

oh.. i think Dave G had his hands in PS.. and if i recall correctly-Tribes2.. is it a coicidence that both games failed to live up to their hype ?

The difficulty of doing a distributed computing model is the hacking. Once you "trust" a server not owned by publisher, then you trust the stats it gives. The whole point of a MMORPG is go up levels and get ub3r loot. It will take 30 whole minutes before a hacker figured how to cheat. Then the MMORPG would no fun when people running around are all level 300.

Some devs should play around with a distributed computing model for a MMOFPS or MMORPG. Instead of one main server owned by the publisher everyone will have some ammount of world data and bandwidth available to everyone else. Something like this would probably be open to only broadband users and would likely be very difficult to implement but it would do away with monthly fees.
