DOOM 3 Hardware Requirements

The Phobos Lab has a post up with John Carmack's response to their question about the minimum system requirements to run id Software's upcoming DOOM 3 (thanks Tiscali Games). Here's the deal:
1GHz CPU
256MB RAM
GF1 or Radeon 7xxx series card

so a P4 3.2GHz with 1GB of DDR333 and a GF FX 5900 Ultra 256mb is enough to play Doom3?

great, I can stop upgrading now

Yes, I'm sure you'll be able to watch the Doom3 intro movie just fine with that config.

I've got the 3.06 proc and the gig of DDR333...all I need now is a 5900 Ultra.

Man, I can't wait for this one!

I think they got his response confused with the specs for running the original Doom.

...from John Carmack that a 1GHz CPU with 256MB RAM and a GF1 is only enough to run the Doom3 installer. The game itself needs a 2Ghz CPU with 512MB RAM and a GF2 or better card.

Ok, those are the minimum requirements (for crap), but what about Recommeneded?

I mean a GF1 and Radeon 7XXX, Thats like a joke. Why even put GF1 when a GF4 MX420 you can get for around $20. And that couldn't even run the MOH expansion multi demo that I tried on my dads pc with out low frame rate at minimum settings.

I would think you need at least a DX8 card to run this game at anything that would look somewhat good.

Nah, I believe it and I've found his iD's requirements to be fairly reliable. However do not expect it to look any better than Quake 2 did. Rad9700+ or GF5+ should get us decent framerates with bitchin graphics. Lookin' forwards to this baby!

EDIT: It's like they are saying your 3 year old pc can run the game with a 3D card for $10 bucks out of the bargain bin. I feel sorry for those people who see the shots on the box and read the requirements and say, "hey my pc can play it", and it's not going to look anywhere near what they thought.

For somereason I got an error trying to update my first post.

Well, those guys know how to program, so the game probaby scales very well.

What I don't understand are the rumors that the game won't have multiplayer! Has there been any more word on that?

An id game without multiplayer is no game at all. They build and license the great engines, other companies write the stories!

DOOM III System Requirements
Optimal:

CPU: 2,5GHZ ~ 2.8 GHZ GeForce 5800FX/5900FX - ATI 9800 Pro 786 ~ 1024MB RAM

Thats what I have heard. But I got 3,5 Ghz (clocked), 1024 DDR800, Geforce FX 5900 Ultra (a little clocked), and the Doom3 alpha ran just fine around 80-90 fps in 1024x768, highquality setting. I was pretty suprised that it ran at all, and that good. The full game should look better and run alot faster.

There is supposed to be mp but only for like 2-4 players max. Coop will be there I think (HOPE!!11!)

I ran the alpha at (educated guess) 15-20 average FPS on an Athlon XP 1800+, 512 MB DDR266, and a GF2 Ti, so it's not far fetched that it would run on the system noted above. But it's still obvious it wouldn't look very good ;).

Sidenote: I REALLY need an FX 5900... anyone want to donate to the, "Buy eunichron a new video card fund"?

MP for D3 has been canceled a few months ago. Also don't bet on Coop, in fact forget it. D3's gameplay has not been designed with Coop in mind, it won't work.

The newer and bigger your machine the better Doom will look and play.
There must have come a point when the level sizes were fairly determined and the engine was in place.
At that point the specs outlined above would probably have been ok.
I ran the leaked and un-optimised E3 demo comfortably on a 1GHz P4 with a GeForce 3 and 256 Mb RAM.

Sorry, but where ever you got your info was wrong. I think it was Todd that updated his plan, maybe Graeme that clearly stated that MP was included, and the DM would "be taken to the next level with dynamic lighting". Now as far as it being taken to the next level, truely doubt that. But DM is planned, just on a limited scale. As far as COOP is concerned, your correct. Coop was never intended as an option and was never though twice about. I suggest someone try finding the .plan, or maybe it was an interview at a site.

Yep, there will be multi(4)player, but no coop.
